I’m a professional Los Angeles fashion photographer with over 30 years of experience and I have no intention of getting a mirror less camera as none of my DSL’s are broken! LOL
Just bought a Nikon D810 to go full frame from a D7100, had enough money to get two new lenses with it 39k shutter count, and it still produces breath taking images. Photography has never been this accessible because of the secondhand DSLR market! Thank you mirrorless!
I sold my best DSLR body and lens recently because they weren't getting much love after getting into Lumix M43. I don't regret it, but I'm keeping 1 DSLR and a few lenses because I do still find the optical viewfinder more fun and natural to use than the EVF
I previously used Canon eos R > switched Nikon DSLR recently because those F mount lens are such great values. I don’t deny that mirrorless is a future moving forward, but it is so pricey to have a professional set-up without using an adapter.
I used z9s up scotland for a week, just didnt cut it for me , electric viewfinders arent for everyone , i bought a new d850 and grip when i got bach home , with newer 24-70 and 70 -200 both fl ed vr 's, the older g ed lenses are still brilliant by todays standards , that nikon shutter is my downfall , it says real camera to me , mirrorless isnt for everyone
Totally agree...dslr bodies still rule when it comes to ruggedness...reliability...price...lens availability...battery life...even studio use... My faves are the nikon d750 and d850...and in canon the 5d "clasic"...6d..5dII...cheers
I have a Nikon D850 bought used and for still photography, it's great. The mirrorless cameras were quite a bit more money and the lenses were more expensive too. For the quality I wanted at a reasonable price, I bought DSLR and am glad I did. The optical viewfinder and long battery life as well as excellent, rugged build make it a winner.
DSLR cameras are great tools for photography. I have too many to mention both Canon, Nikon, Sony (Minolta), Pentax and even a Leica. It's the cheapest way to full frame and the way a Canon EOS 5D Classic renders colors is magnificent. I prefer mirrorless for concerts and other situations, where the loud mirror slap of a DSLR would be problematic. But, if I'm travelling, and I want to shoot film as well, I'm going with either a Canon or Nikon SLR and DSLR and share the lenses between the two camera bodies. In my opinion the global shutter has the potential to be a game changer - but there will still be many situations, where DSLR cameras are more than enough.
Where have we heard this before? Electric cars are the future of motoring. Gas cars are done. Mirrorless cameras are the future of photography. DSLRs are done. Except the market stubbornly refuses to cooperate, neither DSLRs nor Gas cars are done.
I totally agree, and for the same reasons I went back to DSLRs after ten years with Fuji X flagship cameras and glass. The money I got back let me revamp my DSLRs ... D850, D750, 5D mark II and better glass for each, all in mint/like-new/barely-any-shutter-accusations for much less than the mirrorless equal. I felt going mirrorless a decade ago was a very bad financial decision because I bought all that gear brand new and it never gave me the shooting satisfaction that my DSLRs do.
Not a professional photographer here. I bought a cropped Nikon D5200 with a 55mm prime lens back in 2012. I have not been actively shooting for the last 5 years and definitely have not touched the camera for at least 2 years. Just 2 days ago I needed to do a personal shoot and my trustee DSLR and lens still works perfectly. My mind is blown. You are right about em being like tanks made to last.
After 3 years of shooting 90% time mirrorless system (Fujifilm X), I am completely selling it to go back to DSLR. I kept D610 and 5 lenses years ago, which were mostly collecting dust but reviving those again now and obtaining one more body (D780). Over that years, I must admit I hate to stare to EVF despite today's EVFs are big with high resolutions. It's just another screen to stare to and very unnatural... Aditionally, whatever happens in EVF is history since it goes through the sensor, processor and EVF display, when compared to OVF where you see everything literally with the speed of light. Shooting with DSLR opened my eyes again. I am keeping only one Fuji body and one lens after this switch. With DSLR I get better viewfinder experience and in case of D780 possibility to shoot via quick LiveView too, much better battery life (D610 around 1.000 photos, D780 around 2.000 photos), much better body handling and controls and going back to full-frame is also a great perk at the end of the day. My 2 cents only.
Again a great video Grant thank you! DSLR`s are great cameras I have a D3100, two D7000 and a D610. Nothing wrong with them they just as relevant today as they where 10 or 20 years ago. Just as film cameras they have a different artistic vibe! They have their place. I know many professional photographers are using DSLR cameras.
Just picked up a D3 with under 15K clicks and a70-200.... DLSR is going nowhere fast for me.. I still shoot 2 other mirrorless systems as well. But have to have DSLR
I miss my Canon 6D Mk.II so much! Biggest regret was selling it off. I think everyone starting out should shoot DSLR to learn. Chimp and checking as you put it helped me develop my composition skills.
I have both. This may be the old man in me talking but DSLRs feel like cameras and mirrorless feel like little computers. I resisted mirrorless up until last year but didn't sell off all my DSLR gear.
I bought 5 DSLR's in the past 2 months 😅. 4 of them way under $100 USD. People are getting rid of them🙃. Canon 5D Canon 20D Nikon D100 Nikon D200 Nikon D700
I may just be the last person on earth to buy a brand new Canon 5D MARK IV on 23/4/2024 and for the second time!! 😮 Let me explain. I had the 5Dmk4 with EF 50 mm f/1.2 and EF 70-200 f/2.8 mkll for 7 years and after selling everything around 5 months ago to switch to mirrorles again🤦🏻♂️I came across my all time favourite Canon lens the chunky EF 24-70 f/2.8 L USM on gumtree in its original box in brand new condition “and yes I know what you’re thinking” I bought it straight away thinking it’ll go great with the R6 Mark ll stabilised body🙂 well what do you know, the EVF was the biggest disappointment once again.
I've got 2 Nikon D7000s and a Nikon D300 and they are all I use and will keep.using them until their final shutter click. When it all comes down to it, composr the shot, get the correct exposure and you'll get results, equipment be damned.
Thank you for the video. I'm not fascinated by mirrorless cameras mainly due to its EVF-lag. However, Sony A9III seems to address this issue. The pre-burst capture of 1 second of data might make it useable. All its great features come at a cost - image quality. Therefore, being a hobbyist shooter, I stick to my DSLRs. They will never go away. Love my 5DI, II & III. Also for wildlife photography, my 1DIV is a mind-blowing equipment supported by 7D. All bought used so, bank robbery was not in mind. All of those have tons of shutter life remaining. A wonderful feast for knowledgeable photographers resulted from the current mirrorless craze.
Just moved to mirrorless in june, for me, i like the smaller , lighter body, as im getting older , and the biggest difference for me, is the EFV , over the OVF... and thats a matter of preference, also, not having the mirror flapping on each shot , something i didnt think was that big of a deal , but there is a difference , battery life is superior on a dslr , but conversely , the bodies are noticeably larger , bulkier, although i get roughly 800 images on my sony battery ... i still have my nikon d7500 , and recently used it on a hired shoot ... dslrs arent going away anytime soon... I just love being out with the camera , doesnt mateer what you use , Have Fun !!!!🙂
'if it ain't broke don't fix it ! "albeit I am a Canon shooter i just recently got a mint Fuji x100 F for personal use with the choice of optical or electronic viewfinder!
I used to photograph weddings with a 40D back when I was newer to do it and didn't have much money for higher end gear. I made it work but the images were pretty noisy in low light
The only dslr worth buying in my opinion is the Sony a77 and A77 II. It has an EVF which makes it fun and easy to use. Its relatively cheap and it feels great in the hand. Lenses are also fairly cheap until you move into bigger and faster glass.
I was asked this on an interview yesterday, the guy was a prick asking why i still use my cannon mark 5d 4, cut straight to the point no bs, I bought mines in 2020 2 weeks before the pandemic closedown. I can sell that camera and get more than what i bought it for. Money talks.
DSLRs are hands down the cheapest and best tools for 99% of photographers despite that everyone will say they 'need' more. I had GAS for a while until I got some DSLR's in my life... my biggest regret of 2023 was selling my d750 to downgrade to a point and shoot cause I thought my photography journey was dying down. now things are ramping up for me and a d750 is out of reach, I purchased the d300 12mp APSC dslr and wow.... despite how heavy it is I love the image quality AND the personal "cool" factor I get from it... for $100 for a body and $100 on BOTH the 35mm 1.8G AND 18-55VRII for $200 you will get professional quality images for chump change. in other words Grant, I completely agree (but also want this to be a secret cause the prices skyrocket lol). ALSO because I forgot. reviewers have gotten real relaxed recently a lot of the variable aperture lenses available on DSLRs are stellar performers and in my opinion sometimes even better than modern lenses in both sharpness and character.
In regards to battery life, I think DSLRs lose out. I have to charge mine so rarely that when I actually need to charge it I realize that I've lost the charger and now have to look for it.
cheeky thumbnail!! Can't justify even a cheaper used FF mirrorless like the first Z6, which weighs as much as Nikon's DSLRs once you add the FTZ (which I'd need because all I have is F mount lenses). For the money I'd rather buy a second D600/610/800 or two or three!! (that's how much cheaper they are!) and/or some more good lenses. Lenses are more important. Ergonomics is also very important. I find the D3300 the most comfy to use, fits like a glove and it's so nice light and compact, but that extra stop and a bit that of the D600 gets you in low light (and the extra headroom in DR) is difficult to pass up. Although with fast primes (and maybe with the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 if I ever get one) the little DX camera does alright. I usually carry my FX & DX DSLRs as a pair: fast zoom on the FX, longer FL prime on the DX, or primes on both. sometimes I go nuts and also take the D90 so I can use my AF-D lenses on a crop sensor or to have three options without changing lenses (not fun if you're shooting in busy/crowded places). I do wish I had something better for video, ideally a camera dedicated to it.
I have Canon Rebel T7, 80D and 90D, I recently purchased the 6D Mark ii my first full frame DSLR despite the flack it gets online next year I'M planning on getting the 5D Mark iv [I'm a big fan of that badboy] I like the mirrorless cameras also but the issue I have with them especially Canon's line up is they don't look as durable and well built like the DSLRs I was a second shooter at a wedding back in November and I ended up using my canon 90D with no problem, during the holidays I used the 6D Mark ii with no issues whatsoever , my issue also is the fact that camera companies again Canon for example are making cameras so light that it seems if you drop them it's a good bet that camera will splatter into a thousand pieces [I never dropped none of my DSLR BTW] weight is another factor.., I never had any weight issues with any of my cameras nor do I have any weight issues with cameras period, but the quest to make cameras lighter..., I don't know it seems way overblown it goes back to what I said about dropping you camera on hard surfaces like concrete or the pavement and don't forget bumping them on hard surface and objects there is a good chance that your mirrorless camera system could malfunction or stop functioning period, don't get me wrong I like the mirrorless systems and they are the future I just feel the camera companies need to improve the quality of the camera bodies instead of focasing too much on specs, until then I keeping my DSLRs. Peace.
The battery life is sometghing they don't talk about. they want you to upgrade to mirrorless but I was put off by the lens offering on canon and the biggest thing....the pricepoint!!
I was in your camp with my d750 d780 combo, until 3 months ago when local Nikon gave me z9 for a week to try out. For me as a concert/festival photographer the difference in ease of use was massive, and I bought mine even be4 the loan went out. For action/low light id say only good dslr out rn is the d6 with its af sensor, untill a lower mpx mirrorless comes out. At wich point there wont be any reason to get a dslr performance wise. Bang buck tho mirrorless will never be as good as dslrs. Z9 will br far less worth when z9 mk 2 comes than for inetance d850 that will hold its price i think forever
Nikon D700 massive? What are you talking about? You clearly don’t have a D3S for street shooting (like I do.) I tried a Canon 1DX for a few months last year. That’s even bigger! LOL
The explanation about mirrorless cameras is simple, Nikon and Canon dominated the market for a long time and then Sony appeared, with their mirrorless cameras that pleased thousands of amateur photographers, as they didn't need to understand exposure, they got the light right in the viewfinder. making amateurs look like professionals, but it seems that now they are making professionals amateurs, as they make them need automatisms that they wouldn't need before.
I have d4s d3x d810 with many different lenses . I have not decided changed my mind . Honestly it's not that big difference between. I saw many many photographer still using dslr. Mirrorless cameras aren't for rich people
@@grantrobertdavies I do need a new Macbook Pro with Retina Display, at least 17”. Maybe later this or next year. But then I am considering quitting and selling everything so I’m kinda in a weird spot on it all.
Great video as always Grant. I too love mirrorless cameras especially 4/3 format, and like most I too started out with a DSLR. From the D3100 I jumped to a D750, then a D3500 (which unfortunately doesn't recognise genuine Nikon batteries), D3, Df and D90 (battery needed). I will always keep my DSLRs as they are still amazing to this day, and as I am always on the look out for a bargain on eBay, will always keep an eye out for a heavy duty DSLR.
I see more dslr users focusing with their feet than autofocusing, i don’t know what to feel about dslrs now man. Also video performance very bad apparently.(i don’t own dslrs now so i do not know for sure) . Nowadays any function i go to i only see sonys, nikon and canon used to rule years ago but now its sony a7iiis and a7ivs only.
They will not be focusing with their feet they will be zooming in and out because they are probably using a prime lens wich does not zoom and will still autofocus or manual focus.
I’m a professional Los Angeles fashion photographer with over 30 years of experience and I have no intention of getting a mirror less camera as none of my DSL’s are broken! LOL

Nikon D850, (2017) has 11 stops of Dynamic range, by Photons on Photos site. That's a legend, for many and many years to the future.
I'm happy with the results of my Canon 5dMKIV and there's no reason to change.
I have a D850, a D5 and a D200 and I love all these cameras. The D200 is still fantastic as long as you aren't shooting in low light.

I got 2 D40s for less then one of some popular vintage digi compact cameras 😊
I love you thumbnail. How do made that halftone photo of you on the right side?
Just In Canva :)
Z9 will br far less worth when z9 mk 2 comes than for inetance d850 that will hold its price i think forever
the shift is towards mirrorless. dslr may still be relevant. but if you are going to buy a digital camera in 2024 onwards, just go mirrorless.
but why?
Nikon D700 massive? What are you talking about? You clearly don’t have a D3S for street shooting (like I do.) I tried a Canon 1DX for a few months last year. That’s even bigger! LOL
No, I’ve never used one…
The explanation about mirrorless cameras is simple, Nikon and Canon dominated the market for a long time and then Sony appeared, with their mirrorless cameras that pleased thousands of amateur photographers, as they didn't need to understand exposure, they got the light right in the viewfinder. making amateurs look like professionals, but it seems that now they are making professionals amateurs, as they make them need automatisms that they wouldn't need before.
Just got my k50. There is no way im trading that in anytime soon.
Give me a DSLR ANY day, you can stick mirroless camera's where the Sun don't shine
Yeah :) I use and enjoy both DSLR and Mirrorless - It's about having a growth mindset
Well I do have a mirrorless but I call it a compact camera, a Lumix LX100 which I like using if I want to travel light and fast.
I have d4s d3x d810 with many different lenses . I have not decided changed my mind . Honestly it's not that big difference between. I saw many many photographer still using dslr. Mirrorless cameras aren't for rich people
I still shoot with 2 Nikon d500’s and 2 Nikon d850’s. My MacBook Pro laptop is 11 years old.🤷🏻♂️
My 10 year old Macbook - Just died on me :( LOL - I just got new M3 and WOW!!!
Yeah man :)
Go info and thank you.
You are welcome!
fully agree
I see more dslr users focusing with their feet than autofocusing, i don’t know what to feel about dslrs now man. Also video performance very bad apparently.(i don’t own dslrs now so i do not know for sure)
.
Nowadays any function i go to i only see sonys, nikon and canon used to rule years ago but now its sony a7iiis and a7ivs only.
I reckon you must be in your early 20's?
@@grantrobertdavies yeah, i started out with the sony nex cameras as a hobby when they launched
They will not be focusing with their feet they will be zooming in and out because they are probably using a prime lens wich does not zoom and will still autofocus or manual focus.
