I find that repairing discarded mowers to be a fun hobby in retirement (age 73). Everybody needs a hobby! I have an MTD mower that is self propelled and with one handed height setting, and all of those models were red. I just replaced the drive belt that was slipping to the point of providing very little drive. That mower dates from the early 90s, and I've been using it for 10-15 years. If it works like I think it will after my repair, I'll continue to use it. B&s Quantum flat head engine. Unfortunately, they are getting hard to find to strip old parts off discarded mowers. I've recently found three Toro Personal Pace mowers that were junked. One seems pretty complete, so I expect I'll be repairing that one as a project and start collecting parts that can be used as needed.
I need to know how to take cable housings apart to replace broken cable ends. I did remove one but broke the housing that cable goes to but made it work. Had to drill out the connections that hold the housing together then use bolts snd nuts to reassemble the housing. Surely there is a better more proper way.
Martin, you and Sharon crack me up watching your antics! A lot of fun. The mowers we find down here in OZ are different again mainly 2strokes. Keep having fun.
Thanks so much for the shout out. I appreciate it. I am shyer that you think even though I talk a lot. Thanks so much Bob. I was watching the metal shaving of the shroud. Cool job
I am actually out of the province for a family issue. I will catch up when I get home this weekend Thanks so much. I am in a town called Bigger. 6 hour drive home today Thanks for your shout out
Do you recall if that one had the tapered shaft. I got one just like it with no compression and had to do a crankshaft swap or else the blade adapter wouldn't work.
In the spring of 2001, my father bought a brand new Personal Pace Recycler, almost identical to the mower here except it was a steel deck and had the side discharge. I mowed our yard and 5 others in the neighborhood every week for 5 years. Dad continued to use it up until about 2014 when it seemed a little tired and I found a lightly used Duraforce Easy Stride, so it went to a guy whom repairs mowers. I'd get dad another one of these in a heart beat if I could.
Every trash day I go up and down the road picking up all the mowers people throw out. Out of the 50 I have rescued, none have needed anything more than carb cleaning, or a spark plug. It is insane the society that we live in today just throws everything out. I guess it is good that there are guys still like us around to fix up mowers.
Yeah. That "throw away" mentality is sickening to me. My channel would probably be popular then too. You would think how many people are into "repurposing and recycling" that there would be more who would want to at least learn how to fix their own stuff. But oh well. thanks for the reply.
Me too. I just got a 2015 Toro Personal Pace for $10 that just needed an oil change and another Personal Pace that sells at Home Depot for $369 right now that needs an air filter cover. It's crazy. I had an old guy tell me a mower I was putting into my trunk had a garbage plastic carb that couldn't be fixed. I cleaned the jets and had an almost brand new push mower that ran perfectly. I sold it to a guy the next day for $100. I think it's fun fixing these mowers.
We live in a totally disposable society. They want it new, shiny, and plastic. I like it tough, reliable, and affordable. I love bringing back older equipment and saving money. The sense of satisfaction is very rewarding.
I had one of these just this last summer with working keystart, it looked brand new once I got done with it, sold it to a landscaping company for 250.00, it is there goto mower, they love it, great video.
I have this exact lawnmower. It's the most enjoyable mower I've had. I always wondered how much slack should be in the V-belt (drive belt) and would tightening the slack of that belt make the mower move at a faster wheel speed? Thanks!
Just a quick tip...most of these engines have the model number on the engine shroud which you just exchanged. When the new owner goes to look up parts he/she may have a problem with the model number on the replacement shroud not matching the engine on his/her new mower. May I suggest you get the model number off the original shroud and print it out on a piece of paper (cardboard or whatever) and tape it to the handle with strong, clear strapping tape. I do this with all my mowers simply for convenience because quite often those numbers get rusted over and are difficult to read anyway. I love your videos and I hope you and your family have a beautiful 2017 Christmas.
great find & fix Bob, the previous owner's new mower is probably not as nice as this one after you fixed it...I keep a good parts stash myself, it really pays off.
Nice having the extra parts on hand. Beside saving some $$$ it also saves time either having it shipped or picking it up. Plus the recycling is good for everyone. I am at a point that I am going to have to start cataloging it all LOL
Good deal buddy. Looks like a great mower for the price. Those super cyclers are Funny thing you mentioned bruce I just started watching his channel a little over a month ago. Another thing that anvil sure did look a whole lot like a front weight for an exmark or toro with the bagger system. LOL I agree with you about the dust and small engines not sure if I ever told I own a landscaping company and IM on my guys all the time to keep the engines clean check oil every day and check air filters and replace when dusty not clean!!! We put several hundred hours a year on a lot of engines. Hope your son is still doing well I been a subscriber and watching your channel for a long time. Keep the great videos coming.
Thanks I'm happy to report my son had bloodwork done today and all is looking good. Thank you for your support. My guess is that if you want those mowers to last you better be checking them yourself. No one keeps any eye on your stuff like you.
You don't seem to clean engine parts as you remove them to be repaired. My husband does, because for the customer, it show's them, that you have cared for their equipment. And the appearance is important.
Those are great mowers...a friend uses a couple in his grass business and says they can't be beat for the money. I'm still a Honda guy, but I don't cut grass for a living either. :>)
This is the first one of your videos I've come across gotta say excellent job servicing this mower what would have been discarded it starts with one pull just outta curiosity did you dress the blade? Great video either way
That rescue wasn't bad at all, DW6. I started farming in 1975. 5 years later when I could least afford it, the "1980's Farm Crisis" hit. That is why I think and do the things I do. For you young guys who may not remember, bank interest rates shot to 20% +, the Government put a grain embargo on Russia- we lost a major market, Willy Nelson & friends organized "Farm-aid" and 10's of 1000's of farmers went bankrupt thru no real fault of their own. It was "The Perfect Storm". I hung on, but keeping the wolves away from my door was a full time job. DW6, it was truly an ugly time on the farm. I didn't survive by throwing fixable anythings away. "That's my story and I'm sticking to it" HaHaHaHa KIT d
It is funny how you become who you are by the circumstances you live through. You don't give up you adapt. Nice job, it has made you the person you are. Best comment on here. Thanks for it. DW6
> GREAT time to buy stocks and bonds on margin! The only time I've done so. And I bought my home and rental real estate on adjustable mortgages, and saw those mortgage interest rates decline every year until I paid them off.
im stuck between buying new to help feed all the humans nowadays and not liking trashing up the landfills. ok i lie, i collect trash n a daily basis, to restore it.

I did watch quite a few videos by Bruce. Hello from Canada
Nice job
Few little issues Bob but you got there in the end. Nice job.
Yeah this mower is nothing like the ones you are trying to fix.
Martin, you and Sharon crack me up watching your antics! A lot of fun. The mowers we find down here in OZ are different again mainly 2strokes. Keep having fun.
Nice one, glad you enjoy our vids.
Cheers
Martin
Nice job Bob.
Thanks, I'm thinking you missed the shout out in there for your channel or you would have mentioned it?

And here I thought I was the only one on the planet who kicks the bag. Nice work.
12 years of soccer.
Great job , I like that you put links to things you use and the parts , good on ya !
I like the older Toro Recycler mowers. I have a 2004 model that someone was getting rid of a few years ago, and still runs great.
Yeah this one got rescued right in time.
Those are great mowers. I always like the personal pace.
They are good mowers. The bag on these older ones is a bit bulky to dump. Like the transmission on them for sure.
amazing. I'm working on the same model right now and every hex fastener is metric, not SAE.
Do you recall if that one had the tapered shaft. I got one just like it with no compression and had to do a crankshaft swap or else the blade adapter wouldn't work.

I have a newer one with front wheel drive. The tires are slick as can be, but I am searching for a pair of new or good used ones. No luck so far.
try ebay. What model or tire size?

We are a dying bread. No one knows or cares to fix anything. My channel would be a lot more popular in the 1970's

I built a lift table just like yours .. cool .. based on Bruce Pender’s
Great job!

I agree if his new mower is as good as this one it must be a Honda and it would cost $600.
I like to ask you a question why did you not fix the one you took off so now the model number not going to mix up
I don't see the lawn mover anvil in the product description. ; )
That thing worked so well I'm thinking about using it a an anvil. I am actually being serious.
Man, great video!!!!!! Love this I’m always struggling to know how to work on my push mower. Thanks Bob
Happy you found it interesting.
Nice job Bob . Nice when you have old spares on hand. No lawnmower abuse your get Taryl on to you lol.
Cheers
Pete.
"And there's your dinner" KIT d
Yeah, I wouldn't want Taryl to find out about the abuse. What kind of projects are you working on lately Pete?
True That!
A bit quiet at the Bob . We are in the middle of moving house , so doing packing etc.
you got the gerbils like bruce pender
I have 2 of them the good thing is they are in school most of the day.
Pressure washer will take the 6.0sticker on the shroud right off. careful.
Like to see a ring replacement on one of these.
What do you mean by ring replacement?
piston ring? I have 3 of these that must have been run with no oil and now they all have no compression and wondering if its worth trying.
Nice having the extra parts on hand. Beside saving some $$$ it also saves time either having it shipped or picking it up. Plus the recycling is good for everyone. I am at a point that I am going to have to start cataloging it all LOL

I noticed when you were turning the recoil you were doing it backwards................ Great vid tho .........

I see you. After moving in at the year 2013, my dad would get a lawnmower, but would have to get serviced.
Those are great mowers...a friend uses a couple in his grass business and says they can't be beat for the money. I'm still a Honda guy, but I don't cut grass for a living either. :>)
I'm a fan of the the Toro's for sure. Honda too.
Sorry to bother you Doublewide6, but I wanted to know if you ever worked on a 1986 or 87 Toro with the Suzuki 4 stoke engine?
This is the first one of your videos I've come across gotta say excellent job servicing this mower what would have been discarded it starts with one pull just outta curiosity did you dress the blade? Great video either way
