I have family in the radiator business. One thing my cousin drummed into me was that pressure caps have no place on old radiators. Either remove the rubber gasket or only partially close the cap. That engine will run fine at 0psi coolant pressure and that 50yr old radiator is held together with hardware store epoxy. Works for me and i have 7 trucks and tractors that run with loose radiator caps.
Cracking video…….. I would seriously consider having the rad rebuilt. There’s a few local places around Bristol that can do it. Would be a shame to loose that engine due to overheating if the rad crapped itself while driving
Ahhh Sunday mornings don’t get any better than today. Frost outside, logs on the fire, dog on my lap, freshly ground coffee and a new video from Max - simply perfect. I would say tho Max, it might be time for a new hop up 😊
That was a joy to watch. I love that you do your work with nature all about the sound of the wind on the trees the shadows of the branches waving against the cab and I may even of years a passing duck...Thank you for posting bringing some cheer in what's been a dreary November day.
Currently in Kazakhstan (Ekibastuz) from the old USSR surounded by Zills on the KGK drill rigs. During the Soviet Union, it was said that the people pretended to work and the state pretended to pay them for it. Looking at the way they work, most state owned businesses have a torrid quality of workmanship. Finishing touches just don't exist, its deemed a waste of money and time. However, its slowly improving but with a long way to go. Keep the vids coming, love watching them.
12:01 I feel like the watering can should stay there, after you finished building it. It looks so funny, you should mount it there with some leather straps
Hi there great to see the old truck running also on some engines. There’s called plugs between the gearbox and engine but lucky he seems to be alright now. Can’t wait to see her next episode on it.👍👍👍
Ace video Max nice to see the old Zil again. The carburettor you sent me all those years ago is still pumping huge volumes of fuel in to my Zil. I have 6BT for it... maybe one day. Keep up the ace videos!! Thank you
I'll always admire a man who can admit his shortcomings....you pulled that one back kiddo , you'd have been Well and truly hauled across the coals in the REME for dropping a bollock like that !! Fortunately we're more Forgiving 😂❤
What amiserable experience that was...... Clambers out of engine conpartment. Yes, I think that was a fair assessment of the event. I would have used various other less printable words regarding the ancestry of the engines designers I suspect. Another excellent video thank you again. Keith
That's neat. I have a Daihatsu 993 diesel in another Russian vehicle - a Ural bike. It pressurises its water jacket, which is either just the head gasket, or a crack in the head between valve seats (they do this). Your video gives me some ideas for how to start to investigate further. cheers, Mark (PS - in another 5 or 6 years, if you end up needing glasses like I did, working upside down in a tight space like that will become a total pain in the arse - ask me how I know!).
Certaily got very lucky with that engine and the coreplugs, and just goes to show that if something's going to sit for a while, either drain it so it's dry, or get the anti-freeze in just to be sure it doesn't turn into an ice cube, especially now we've had a decently cold week with snow and ice... :)
Cool project! Btw soviet military stuff had much better quality control than the civil stuff :) I had 20 y.o. Lada 21013 with epoxy all over the radiator and top nozzle held entirely on epoxy. New radiator costed almost the same as the car. :)))
Great rescue and very lucky too, those Cummins engines seem like tough units. A word of caution as an electrical professional with that wiring hanging out of what looks like a battery charger on the horse box. Please rewire that mains plug correctly for your own safety, would hate to see a fire or shock come from that!
Great to see it running again. The Russian quality can't be that bad if you are preferring the Soviet vehicle over the British one. Yeah, I know it's a different engine. 😁
Turned out well Max.. Congratulations on keeping your head and working through the possibilities 💪 👍 That engine sounds sweet too.. Do you know its mileage?
There is nothing wrong with refitting the old plug. People get hung up on replacing everything because they don't know any better. So much stuff gets wasted. If the plug was pressed out evenly, then it will go back in no probs, but I would use some sealant. In the olden days we used a mixture of red lead and gasket sealant. If the cooling system is huge, and it never exceeds boiling point, then no pressure cap is necessary. Remember that boiling point is lower at high altitude.
So satisfying when it turns out to be an 'easy' fix. I had a TD5 which was emulsifying its oil, unfortunately I wasn't as lucky, a full rebuild including oil cooler rebuild did not resolve the problem, a head pressure test showed it was a crack in one of the exhaust ports :(
Maximus put coreplugs with gasket sealer they go in easily and seal better, put bottle of rad seal in cooling system it will seal leaks and remain active in cooling system, Somerset mike.
Run a bottle of engine head gasket sealant through that rad it will seal anything that thin or dodgie, forget rad seal that’s ok for cars but the head gasket seal works a treat on commercial stuff.
Absolutely loved season 1 and season 2 is not disappointing. Just a shame there was no footage of you running out from your fancy dress party dressed as a chicken to check on the Zil. We'll just have to imagine.
The engine sounds so good, and as others said you've a spare engine now. I'd love to know, if anyone does, the difference mpg, between the v8 petrol and the cummins
Have you tried radweld or similar products Max? I have fixed a few leaks on old cars with it and liked the idea that any pits that opened up on a long trip would seal
Hey, Max. Those things you checked for freeze damage are called "freeze plugs" in the USA. It's been my experience with failed freeze plugs that every one of them was shielded by a motor mount-- needing the removal (or at least lifting) of the engine. Easily accessible freeze plugs never fail-- must be one of those "Murphy's" things.
Many thanks to the channel Sam's Motors & Machine for the video that inspired me to look for the second set of core plugs!

Cheers for the link! Glad you got her going again 💚
Cant tell you how much joy your videos bring to me. Long time viewer and just wanna say thank you.

Awesome News! And now you have a spare engine (every cloud n all that)....its great to see the ZIL up and running again 👍
For such a young man you are proper old school, I think you and Fred dibnah would have got on great. Respect
That was a joy to watch. I love that you do your work with nature all about the sound of the wind on the trees the shadows of the branches waving against the cab and I may even of years a passing duck...Thank you for posting bringing some cheer in what's been a dreary November day.
I haven't got a practical bone in my body,I'm always amazed by your ability to fabricate, improvise and fix things!
The way it started after all that time is amazing!
max lovely to see the old russian truck starting sounds great as well, well done
With how gray that oil was, I thought for sure the bottom end of that engine would be toast. That's a nice surprise! Nicely done!

What a result! I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when you rang Mark to tell him you'd fixed it.
My favorite truck on the channel. Glad to see you starting back on it.
Glad you saw the video that saved you time and expense. Look forward tothe 'Horror Under the Tarp' Video. Great stuff Max.
12 valve. An iconic engine! Good save. 🙂👍
Great update, delighted you got it running, really does sound nice.
6BT probably one of my favourite diesels because it's a simple engine.
12:01 I feel like the watering can should stay there, after you finished building it. It looks so funny, you should mount it there with some leather straps
Glad you fixed the ZIL Max Brilliant stuff!
Well done Max. Sometimes we come up trumps despite the odds seemingly against us. This certainly looks like a victory!
Nice work Max; many years ago I was an organ builder, so following this with interest!
Glad it turned out so well for you max, champion.
Thank goodness. And thank goodness for those plugs in the design.
Brilliant result Max, so pleased for you.
Great to see the Zil running Max
I love these old trucks.
I'm moving to Bulgaria next year, there are loads of mad old trucks out there to play with!
Yea loads of stuff to play with out here lada's, trucks and tractors 😁
@OffGridWithTheUdens Then a quick go of the adventure playground you built for the kids 🤣
cheap land?

26:57 I bet the radiator would work better with 50:50 vodka mix - which it was designed for ;)
Great save there. Engine sounds sweet so next step...Thanks for posting.
Ace video Max nice to see the old Zil again. The carburettor you sent me all those years ago is still pumping huge volumes of fuel in to my Zil. I have 6BT for it... maybe one day. Keep up the ace videos!! Thank you
Loving this series so far Max
I love the old metal watering can Max.Brought back some lovely childhood memories 👍.
Just a handful of tools needed, next a whole wing full of kit required!! Great work and fab video!! Cheers
Brilliant video and a fantastic outcome
I remeber watchimg vids on this truck yearsssss ago! And it just popped up wow!
Great to see there was no damage to the engine.
I'll always admire a man who can admit his shortcomings....you pulled that one back kiddo , you'd have been
Well and truly hauled across the coals in the REME for dropping a bollock like that !! Fortunately we're more
Forgiving 😂❤
Comrades....Project Awesome must never die..
A great video which I suspect is going to do really big numbers!
Put some anti-freeze in that rad!
Good job mate! So glad to see the Zil running again :D

To quote a fictional programming character we're ALL familiar with... "It's ALIVE!!!" Top job! Onwards...
Excellent - though I’m left wondering what a rebuilt monster petrol V8 would have been like 😝😝😝
Iirc they were only 5 litres....Not massive

Always look forward to a new video from Max. Probably my favourite channel on UA-cam.
Well done Max great to hear from you again looking forward to seeing some more videos 👍
Lovely video good advice
good see you got vlog out keep up the great vlogs and work thanks lee
Well done Max!
Great video, as always. I would check the head gasket or oil cooler if it has one, the oil had a lot of water in it.
Good save Max. (Don't forget the antifreeze !)
First thing that crossed my mind was that the new crew had followed the previous crews tradition and drank all of the anti freeze!
Awesomeness personified 👍👍👍
Be careful Max - Russia might ask for it back ! Best wishes.
Everything is so bad, that Putin took tanks and armored vehicles from the Mosfilm film studio, for the war with Ukraine🤷♂️
Pearce's scrap yard at Dundry mate , good lads
Thumbs up indeed. An enjoyable watch and awesome result!
Love the sound of that engine.
The finagling on show here is next level. Respect x 1bn.
Fantastic. A Mad Max looking truck for Max!
Excellent result !
#outstanding work and classy solutions😎👌

Probably more for the interest,as they are very rare in the U.K.
Don’t forget the anti-freeeze😊
Turned out well Max.. Congratulations on keeping your head and working through the possibilities 💪 👍

Core plugs doing the job :D

Next step? Put some bl00dy anti-freeze in it!
I know it’s a bit early max but when the zill started it looked like all your Christmases came at once 😂😂😂 well done mate
Cracking good job 👍🏻😉
What a result.
Nearly became project scrap!
Well done Max 👍
Not easy on the knees, kneeling on the engine like that!
A very enjoyable video.
Brilliant!
Deserved a drive to the pub!
Max have a look at waterless coolant (Evans), runs at much lower pressure, no rust internally, and doesn't eat paintwork!
It runs like a mouses heart. Whats the zil's history / backstory, where did you get it from originally?
Absolutely loved season 1 and season 2 is not disappointing. Just a shame there was no footage of you running out from your fancy dress party dressed as a chicken to check on the Zil. We'll just have to imagine.
Use solder to seal the radiator you only need large, medium, small soldering irons heated with gas.
The engine sounds so good, and as others said you've a spare engine now. I'd love to know, if anyone does, the difference mpg, between the v8 petrol and the cummins
Phew 😅 Excellent 👍🏻
🍀

Love it. Your approach is so similar to mine its unreal. Out of curiosity do you record on a camera or some sort of DSLR?
Oh Yes - She’s Aliive!! 🙌🏻😁🙌🏻
"You couldn't get fired for being rubbish at your job" - a bit like the UK today
Certainly the case with everything above shop floor!!!
BIG 👍Max. 😃
Now you have a spare engine to put in Kermit. ;-)
Happy dance!

Max get me a rough size of them core plugs I know a few bodies that work for Cummins 👍
