Bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen ? How will anyone show interest if these rooms aren't shown. You really would need the purchase price again to update everything, add 2 full time gardeners into the costs also.
But rural Scotland is a world away from modern living in a metropolitan city with all conveniences down the hill. It's a matter of personal choice. Both have plus and minus.

You are probably going to need the best part of $3m to do it up.
Make sure the roof is water tight as they call it lol. Basic utilities the same. Stabilize and just live there like it is. Maintain whats there. Make your self a designated realistic small area to live in during the cold months. Possibly in one room? Living in a super huge house doesn't have to cost you a fortune if you can use common sense and aren't rich. I've done it myself.
In California, this price would get you a very average 2-3 bedroom home in an average neighborhood. If we are talking a coastal city, a run down 2-3 bedroom home in a sketchy neighborhood.

It was resold soon after the purshase along with some other adjoining property so I don't know what those newer owners plan to do with it, maybe they are planning a hotel. THe advantage of a hotel is that more people can enjoy it compared to it being turned into a private home for a big family. Also, it may be far away from schools etc. Thus, a hotel could work. Why is it sad?
