Make sure the roof is water tight as they call it lol. Basic utilities the same. Stabilize and just live there like it is. Maintain whats there. Make your self a designated realistic small area to live in during the cold months. Possibly in one room? Living in a super huge house doesn't have to cost you a fortune if you can use common sense and aren't rich. I've done it myself.

I have a lot of Scottish ancestry and the idea of living in Scotland appeals except for the weather and it’s still part of the UK. I have a church for sale... it was £30K in 2014, sold by Church of Scotland, bought for £54K in 2019 by me (because it had planning permission for a house conversion) BUT NOT IS ALL IT SEEMS.... the church sits atop archaeology from a former church and abbey., causing 90% humidity... cost of remedy 2 million pounds and the council has stopped maintaining the graveyard... The Church of Scotland disposed of the church knowing its problems and the last developer's agents did a very poor job of isolating the problems .... Buyer beware! Put your dreams on hold.... AND CHECK THE HISTORY OF THE SITE FOR YOURSELF... do not rely on professional advice... In Scotland it falls far short of 'professional'

In California, this price would get you a very average 2-3 bedroom home in an average neighborhood. If we are talking a coastal city, a run down 2-3 bedroom home in a sketchy neighborhood.

The surroundings are very beautiful as well as the architecture but I would be looking for something with more acres of land than something huge with too many rooms. Maybe this is a problem because maybe looking 😁 wanting a castle I would have to reconsider it. I don't know, maybe I'm counting the chickens before they hatch.
