I started reading Penman on a coach journey to an important meeting sixteen years ago, inevitably bailing out of said meeting and shut myself away to finish it and re - read it many times in the hotel room then joining the local library purely so that I could borrow Withnail on DVD. I really hope that Penman makes it to the screen because his story would be so important to adolescents today and what happened in some of his most crucial formative years, if I had the money I would fund it. I hope that Bruce is still well and creating.
On the metro, many years ago, on opening, the first page of "The Butcher Boy" (by Patrick McCabe) I found myself going backwards and forwards, till the last word. Can't wait to read Penman- tnx for your comment.
To watch Robinson actually write, to see him BECOMING the characters he creates, is breathtaking... (It's interesting that he USES alcohol to 'unclip' his rational mind as he does that, though he writes most rationally...) The man is a fucking genius and a poet. xx SF
Vintage sports car. A large, beautiful, old, converted farmhouse in the countryside with a grand piano, and two or three horses in the stables looked after by the wife and daughters. He definitely hit the right spot in his life! Feels like contentment! And why not, eh?! 🤔 ✌🏼😉👌🏼
Marvellous, marvellous. Who knew, from my initial experience of Bruce in the hilarious "Still Crazy" that he had this much depth? And - at 32:00 when he is reading by the North Foreland Lighthouse in Broadstairs, he is standing 50 yards from my grandmother's house, where from 1956 to 1966 I spent many, many of the happiest days of my life. It ain't where you are, it's who you're with. So sorry he had such a f**ked-up dad… but sometimes the grain of grit needs to be there to produce the pearl.
+morganfisherart ive been watching still crazy again for the last couple of nights, its one of those that once i start i'll probably watch it every day for a week. but for the longest time, and im not sure why, but i thought Bruce wrote it, only recently discovered, thanks to imdb that he didnt. it just seems like something he would have.
I don't necessarily agree with his political views, however, he is a great writer. He prides himself on being 'a great dialogue writer', and I would agree. Long live Withnail and I!

Oh yes Dickens whom I've never read underlies something or other. Honestly you pommies could win the Olympics in onanism. No offense to Bruce intended.
Very talented guy who DOES rant too much and Richard E Grant has him to a tee and I love him for telling the truth and not being Bruce's sychophant. You ARE a Champagne Socialist Bruce and this makes you a hypocrite . Sorry but the reality is like most of these Fabians you want nice things for yourself but not for us Plebs👌🏿
In his Esquire Withnail and I watchalong commentary he compared the rise of Hitler with Brexit implying the nation had lost it's mind. Bruce did a cockney accent " WE WON DA WAAWW" and conflated wanting to leave the tin pot wretch of the EU to English people being delusional about Britain's power. One got the sense of the sneering middle class liberal over the common man essentially.
Love Bruce Robinson's writing. What a rare man he is.

He has a unique and quirky turn of phrase
I consider it improbable anyone with a modicum of taste be disparaging of Bruce Robinson's contributions to film and literature.
He was 50 in a week and he had a sole fluffing up his shoe.
That killing fields clip is straight out of the Quiet American.
Spot on
I don't necessarily agree with his political views, however, he is a great writer. He prides himself on being 'a great dialogue writer', and I would agree. Long live Withnail and I!
