    Thanks as always for all of your suggestions and advice on how to improve the table. I learn a lot from reading all the comments and they’ll also help other people wanting to do similar things. Lots of people have mentioned to use heavy duty draw sliders which was one of my ideas. Why would these be better than what I’ve done?

    • @smackassify
      @smackassify 2 роки тому +1

      Draw sliders would be more stable but you might have some minor issues with the bottom of your mattress. Over time your body heat from the bed above and humidity will also warp the table a little bit itself. If you want to keep the current design but make it easier to slide, use some surf board wax or bee wax as a lubricant for the rails. Some type of dual cabinet doors for the middle space under the table would help for stability if you just open them to 45 degrees while the tables out. It would also be a good place to hide your toilet too, perhaps on a pull out floor mounted tray using some floor mounted drawer sliders.

      Hi Will, try some chalk dust or talcum powder on the edges of the table. Always look forward to your videos. You're flying it buddy! Edit; if the table does start to bow just flip it over! LOL.. Edit:(again) maybe cut a small slot (elongated hole) approx an inch in instead of a handle?

    • @antonyevans3929

      The drawer runners would give a smoother operation and the table would be more stable when out. What you’ve done is perfect for what you need though 👍

      As humidity and temp changes the wood can swell and shrink so there will be times that it is tighter and times that it is looser. If you used draw slides then they would stay more consistent. You could also try and having aluminum on the wood that slides in aluminum on the bed to keep it slicker. I love your table design and love watching your videos. If you haven't figured out those bolts underneath the van you may want to look at screw extractors

      @JustinHale2 2 роки тому

      I was thinking something very similar. Basically making a faux panel in front of two legs that would be permanently fixed to the table. It would jut out about an inch from the adjacent sides, but you'd have permanent legs and an opening for underneath the bed when you pull the table out.

    If the height is correct at the back side, maybe you can pull it out towards the back of the van and use it as a bar table. Great for cooking outdoors and drinks with friends.

    Excellent work Will. The only thing I would do is make some holes where the board won't be exposed so there is some ventilation for the middle of the bed. The slats are doing it either side but there is nothing in the middle this might make the bed damp in the middle. Only saying as our bodies produce a lot of sweat and needs circulation under the mattress. ✌✌👍😊

    Hi Will, you can use drawer slides or track back brackets in inner side of channels to make it easy to drag and look more professional and attach a rubber band handle instead of metal handle to pull the table. In this way, you won't get hurt your leg while getting down from bed :)

    One small suggestion might be to put a board along the side of the mattress to protect it (and your bedding) when you are sitting at the table, especially when eating. It will also stop the mattress and bedding encroaching onto your table. Can't wait for another instalment of the diesel heater saga.

  • @MilfMildew

    Cool addition. A few modifications or issues you might want to consider: 1) Round the ends (both axis) of the rails to reduce scraping the table over time. 2) Swelling may be a problem in more temperate climates. I do not have a proper solution for that, however powdered graphite is a great dry lubricant. 3) You may want to consider a partial locking mechanism. Such mechanism could consist of a spring loaded bearing attached to the bed frame which would auto lock into a small concave indention on the side of the table (hard to explain without a picture). Thanks for the content!

  • @GRIT123451
    @GRIT123451 2 роки тому +11

    Like the design. Maybe raise the slats double what they now by removing the slats then run 3 long pieces of wood across. This would enable you to put a full set of bed slats in and you wouldn’t need to mess with the table. Plus if your boarding it off you wont be able to see it.

    • @chriss9177
      @chriss9177 2 роки тому

      Are you suggesting he should bore some large ventilation holes in his table? Incredibly that’s not as stupid as it’s current design, with the mattress wiping against the table as it goes in&out

    • @GRIT123451
      @GRIT123451 2 роки тому +3

      @@chriss9177 No I mean remove slats. Get 3 wood beams same size as the 3 metal bed frame put them across then you can fit a full set of slats, So where he raised the slats first it’ll be double. So when will pulls his table out it won’t make the mattress dip as it wouldn’t be touching.

    19:24 i'm glad you thought of that Will as i had been thinking the same thing all the way through and came up with same solution as you did.
    I think that the table is a great idea & a brilliant space saver.

    Great video Will i enjoyed it.

    Smoother: File the edges off the inner faces of the aluminium profile pieces. Also maybe you could make 2 legs which are the same thickness of the bed support slats. They could slide in under the mattress alongside the table when not in use, then to fit under the table corner when in use have some sort of a dowel fitted in the end of the leg which locates into a hole in the underside corner of the table

    Tony's Tip 1 - Screw a stop to the underside of the bed to stop it flying all the way out in a crash or emergency stop situation.
    Tony's Tip 2 - Just buy some slightly thinner plywood instead of spending hours with a plane and sander.
    Tony's Tip 3 - If you ignore Tip 2 and want to play with a plane, use a shoulder or rebate plane and just plane down the bit that goes in the aluminium section
    Tony's Tip 4 - As an alternative to Tip 3 you could use a router to do the same job and do it in about a minute.
    The danish oil looks really smart, a good choice.

    Will you are a diamond, no matter how you do it or how it turns out, you are learning every step of the way, plus you entertain us all. 1 suggestion is maybe you could replace the 2 side lengths of wood you have the rails (table runners) screwed to & extend them to the 3rd metal bed rail, so if somebody is laying on the backdoor side of the bed the full length wooden sides will be resting on all 3 bed rails rather than them ending in the middle empty space with no support beneath them, if you can understand what I'm trying to say (a bit long winded I agree) but you are doing amazing & tackling things head on so good on you. Everyday is a school day. Build is coming on & progressing well...

    A full height cupboard door hinged on the right side could double up as a table support when it is open. A small bolt fixed to the top left corner of the face of the door could lock it in the open position into a small hole in the underside of the table. The bolt could also be used to stop the table sliding out when driving .You may also want to cover the table framework with thin MDF to prevent it snagging on the underside of the mattress when being put back in.

    I think the table will eventually wear away on those metal runners, perhaps you can use some drawer runners or add some metal bearings to the edge of the wood to help it run freely?

    Another benefit of putting the slates on over the top of the table is the table won't be rubbing on your mattress.

    To make the entire project smoother and simpler, use some drawer-slider type fittings, some of which can take large loads and will reinforce the edge of the 'table' ... These will have bearings in them and will be a vast improvement. Adding a catch of some sort will hold the table either in, or out ...

    In my van, I can remove the desk and store it against the front partition horizontally. The leg is then in the storage area. That way, the bed can still be used and table can be put away. In the event of a bed failure, I won't have to panic and unbuild what I created. The idea came from a German guy I parked next too who said simplicity and practicality makes your home on wheels a pleasant place to live.

    Hi Will, Great - that table can also serve as extra counter-space while cooling. But you definitely don't want to put your main seat there, but rather on the opposite side. Reason: from what I gather, you're gonna have a kitchen counter on driver side, and if you position your main seat there, you're gonna be trapped by the table. Imagine a situation: you've cooked and served your fajita, unfolded this table and now you your fajitas are served and waiting for you on that table; How will you get into that seat? You can't. You'll need to move everything from that table to the kitchen counter or the bed, slide the table in, get into your seat, slide the table out, put all the dishes back on the table.
    Or another scenario: now that you're in your seat and the steaming fajitas are awaiting you, you realise that you forgot the cheese in the fridge or even worse you forgot to roll the camera. How are you gonna get out of there? You're trapped by the kitchen counter and this table. So you definitely want to have your seat on the opposite side.
    By the way, for the fridge, it will be a cheaper and more efficient solution to go with a regular 88 litter undercounter 220V fridge. There are many tests and youtube videos that prove that they are more power-efficient than the overpriced 12V fridges.
    Looking forward to seeing you install the water system. In one of the episodes you mentioned a possible shower. That would be very interesting.

    Id try bearings.Take a look at how your kitchen drawers open. Using a similar mechanism could help you pull out your table more smoothly.

    I would put some sort of locking device on the table to keep it in place while driving. You don't want that coming flying forward in the event of an accident or having to brake really hard.. it would cause a lot of damage to a person.

  • @werhold

    hey will you have done good
    candle wax from a normal white candle rubbed only on the runners is the way to go (dont rub it on the wooden table top as you dont want to mess up the table with too much wax)
    I would re-think the slats going up the way because you will be able to feel them through the mattress, just make sure no-one sits on the mattress when the table is extended
    I wouldn't bother with a handle as it will get in the way and could break off easily as its so near the end of the table, just drill a few well placed holes in the table top to get your fingers in

    I’d put 3 lengths of wood over the top then you can attach the bed slats to those, the lengths of wood would also add extra strength to the cantilever

    You could have a board attached vertically to the end of the table. It would be your "leg" and a cover for the void under the bed.
