  • I am a small animal veterinarian who share the cases I see. This is about how to talk to your vet when your pet needs help and you cannot afford everything on the estimate. More in this at my blog KMDVM.blogspot.com.

after many years w my vet(s), I have 6 pets n asked if I could have some type of discount. They gave me a 10% discount on office visits, regular exams n rechecks. But they can't discount meds or diagnostic procedures, such as CT scans, in-depth ultrasounds, etc. I've found that they are more responsive/concerned, now that I've told them I'm struggling. Now they"ll tell me what treatments can wait, what tests must be run n those they can follow-up later. Even meds. they've told me where to get it for less. Especially the newer generation of vets seem more than ready to listen w compassion n try to help if they can. Things were definitely "stricter" years ago, a bit more business-like, even tho they were compassionate. TY Dr. Krista n all the vets who offer compassionate care n treatment. Blessings y'all ʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ Happy International Bears and Elephants Day too!

Thank you so much for this, Dr. Magnifico. I found your content through your Get Out Alive series (this series is so important, please keep posting more of this type of content), specifically, on urinary blockages. I have a special needs kitty who has had health issues since 6 months of age, and has always required significant veterinary care outside the norm. When he started having urinary blockages/flares multiple times in a year despite eating almost exclusively urinary care wet food + a little c/d dry kibble, it became so much to handle. It almost feels like it doesn't matter how far you go, or how much you pay for insurance, it's never enough - you've got to cough up your percentage on the spot in an emergency, and the vets always act like you're neglecting your cat just because their struggle is ongoing. Never mind trying to talk about lower-cost options, the vets we've seen vehemently refuse to send a catheterized cat home. I never imagined trying to get my little guy care would be such a nightmare. Your content and message are invaluable.

the free market does not work for things like medical care, so i hate to say it, but the govment needs to do price setting for vets

You’re an amazing Veterinarian ♡ . Some vets don’t have love for the animals or job they do and it’s heartbreaking.
My dog was a senior healthy in every aspect I’m proud of that. Her teeth and everything was perfect. she had a mass in her tummy and it went undiagnosed until it was too late, even though I never missed a physical exam. I should have done what you mentioned and taken notes and asked for findings.
It’s been more than 6 months and I’m still grieving. She could’ve still been here. Now I take my other pets to the vet who put her down, his physical exams are very thorough and he was very kind to me when this happened.

A lot of places are going digital. Hopefully the digital copies are just as thorough as paper! (I prefer paper)

The vet and me agreed on a price for him to do nothing more than a 1 minute exam to one of my cats. He did it and then did the tactic of tacking on a $20 charge for an upsell test i didnt want. I paid the full bill but refused to pay that extra $20. He then called my house and left an angry threatening message on my machine.

Absolutely disgraceful, what an uncaring creep. If he's that nasty over $20 dollars imagine his behaviour at higher costs. Shudder

I have 11 cats and 1 dog. Nobody ever gave me a discount and when they suggest an exorbitant procedure it’s most likely going to be a no

My new vet does not care about me not affording the cost. She directed me to 2 pet charities who only see people on benefits. I have a job so those places are not options that are open to me. I've opted for cheaper cystocentesis test £614, instead of £1900 for an ultrasound scan and cystocentesis. All they are interested in is the money, meanwhile my cat is still suffering. I am mistrustful of them now and will be leaving there as soon as this nightmare is over. They are unprofessional and have not given me copies of anything that I've signed. No doubt Iwill be charged for photocopies.

I spent $4000 today on one of our carts for a kidney stone. Next week, I’m flying to Mexico City for a full CT scan, blood, fecal, skin, hearing, vision, and endoscopy test on me for $2,000. I love my cats, but I’m thinking of going back to the vets with my three cats to find out where I can either put them down or set them free to live on their own. It is just too expensive to have a pet anymore.
