Underground Nuclear Aircraft Laboratory

- We made it into an underground complex that was used to design a nuclear powered aircraft that could stay in the air for weeks. Inside was an unshielded reactor used to radiate different parts to test the effects. part two of this explore where we find the reactor room can be found here: • Poolrooms The Nuclear ...
That’s an old USAF facility. They were testing nuclear powered aircraft engines. They also irradiated the forest and equipment to study the effects of a nuclear war. The bunker is deep in there and is where the scientists would stay during testing. Operated from 58-71.
Where is this?
@@AT-ki8jz Dawson Forest in Georgia. About an hour north of Atlanta.
@@craigh27 that's what I thought, I had no idea there were underground accessible parts
Top info Thx ..
They aren't accessible, this is insane. I used to go into those buildings about 10 years ago. It's almost impossible to get in. That's why I asked who too kthem because they missed a few buildings that you could get into before.
Glad to see someone dug the tunnel out! I went in there back in the 80’s with a buddy of mine. So far I’m not growing any extra limbs!! The tunnel was not flooded at the time. As I recall there was a big set of metal doors the were welded shut at the end. Great video. Brings back memories!
Dam welded shut? That was an entrance to the underworld
The entrance to the main place where the reactor was stored if I'm not mistaken. That was a train tunnel.
Go to the doctors anyway dude. Just to be safe
@@c.jjohns6758 like the Black Ops Cold War zombies cinematic.
The fact that you got extremely lucky doesn't tell it's safe. You either need to check every fucking inch with counter or go in there full hazmat suit, dude they fully covered in mud.
You can just google how badly one single piece of radioactive dust will fuck you up in couple of extremely painful months.
I cringe so hard every time I hear this "I didn't grow any extra limbs", there are people who got fucked up just cause they picked up wrong piece of metal and carried it for too long, dude it's not extra limbs it's cancer lots of suffering and pain.
Again you just got lucky, that's it, you can thank God or whatever.
some places just gotta stay closed for most people.
Excerpt from the internet:
Aside from the visual aboveground remains, the remains of the underground facility at the reactor area also still exist. This was the area that shielded physicists and workers during irradiation processes. It consists of three underground levels and a tunnel that led to a parking area for employees during the time the plant was in operation. These underground compartments, which had to be continuously pumped during the 1950s and 1960s, are now completely flooded due to the water table, and entrances are sealed with bulldozed mounds of dirt for the protection of individuals, although according to McClure, "We have continuously had to seal up the 3 openings to the tunnel and underground area because folks occasionally dig them out.
100% the radiation is caused by radon, not leftover material. Also you should have a 4-Gas sensor. Make sure you're not walking into a pocket of explosive methane gas.
well you cant be 100% sure since you werent there when they decomissioned it, and since the guys in the video didnt have the equipment to determine which isotope it is. definitely agree with the gas sensor tho, methane is another invisible killer.
For people wondering what the object is that sank to the bottom at 13:38, it seems to be a flare attached to a rock to help it sink. That’s why there’s smoke at the end of the video when they pull the GoPro up, and someone says “call the fire department.”
You know your stuff
thx I thaught it was a water animal x)
It was ran by Lockheed to develop a nuclear powered plane in the 1950s. The main building goes 6 stories down.
DN, that's some SCP levels of unknown anomalies.
Just a heads up. Farther back in the park there is a hill, when you walk around the hill on the right you’ll notice it drops off. Built into the side of the hill are MASSIVE bunker doors that have been welded shut.
I lived there in the 90s and all the kids would go back there and smoke after school. That was when you could still drive vehicles in the park. If I remember correctly (sorry, was definitely stoned on this journey), you have to cross the creek where the road goes through it and then I believe you have to cross one of the gulleys where the bridge has been demolished. OR it’s the bridge that’s still intact. For sure we had to walk part of the way.
I’ve NEVER seen anyone else find this area so good luck explorers. Can’t wait to see it again. Make sure to start your journey early bc it’s pretty far back
Talked to a friend, got some more information.
WE did cross over a bridge, she said she remembers that we tried to go back like a month later and the bridge was demolished.
Is her memory correct 🤷🏼♀️ but I think I remember that too and there aren’t a lot of intact bridges left so the likelihood that it’s a demolished bridge is much higher.
It’s also obvious they don’t want anyone back there 😂
I’m PRETTY sure that it’s where they stored the aircraft they were testing. The doors were that big.
all the bridges have been taken down, was just there about a week and a half ago with a few friends, would love to hear more about how to find these doors your talking about though
1990's remember the authorities went around and burried and gated tunnels and access areas because it was deemed unsafe.
Should maybe wear masks, black mold and other potential hazards.
Diving this would be extremely dangerous.visability is only 2-3 ft.
@@jeoboden You ever turn your high beams on while driving in fog? Brighter lights would actually lower the distance you can see, not increase it.
@@jeoboden short visibility makes it easy to get disoriented forget which way the surface is and potentially get caught on stuff. Plenty of people have died that way
Cave divers have died when they stirred up the silt on the bottom and suddenly could not see even with lights. It happened to a friend of mine but he was able to make his way out by following one wall of the cave.
@@OnTheRiver66 your friend needs to stop cave diving..... you ALWAYS run a line when cave diving if there's not already a known safe line there..... he's not cane diving certified I'd say and shouldn't be in one.
@@michaelvoorhees5978 absolutely, but he was not intending to cave dive. This was years ago, more than 50 years, and the caves were not not as well posted as they are today. He went into an opening close to the surface of a spring and did not know there was silt on the bottom. The other springs in the area did not have silt on the bottom. No warning in the literature we had at the time. It could have been fatal had he gone deeper into the cave. I was not on that dive but I have been other dives with him and we both stopped at the warning signs as neither of us were cave qualified. To me the important lesson is to know when there is silt on the bottom before your fins accidentally kick it up. Even in a quarry you could become disoriented in a blackout.
Not a cave and I haven't watched all of your videos but, I believe that this was my favorite so far. Thanks for sharing.
Wicked!! That would be amazing to explore! Always love the content!!
It is supposedly 4-6 stories down. You can find older pictures online of when the went in the tunnel decades ago and the water level is a lot lower and no graffiti on the walls. They had a pump station next to the river that transferred the water to the hole that the reactor was kept in when not In use. There is a great UA-cam video of the GNAL facility when it first opened in the late 1950s.
Thanks
I liked hearing James narrating this time. It added a different perspective. Very funny stuff in the stairwell!
13:38 ... Definitely very weird. You can hear the force it was traveling. I think you all should come back and check this spot out in particular. I know those rafts in the beginning aren't that expensive, but who just leaves a raft after exploring, still inflated no less.

Back in the early 90s the company he worked for (which I can provide the name but I would need to ask him again) was contracted by the US GOVN to cover up a NUCLEAR Reactor at a underground military base in the Dawson forrest. Nobody knew about the base. Only select individuals where allowed to work on this contract. My friend himself did not work there, but like I said he worked for the company. Guess what.. After he left the company he talked to several of his old friends about the subject of the base. He obtained copies of the paperwork and shared it with us. The paperwork clearly stated what the job entailed.
The job was to seal off the nuclear reactor (not sure what with) then poor concreate over it several feet deep. Then they were flood the base with water. Then seal off all entrances/exits to the base. The job was completed and time went on.
They didn't do a very good job of sealing it lol
Not true. Not even close to being true. The reactor was removed at the beginning of the 1970's and even the soil around the reactor was hauled away. The US Govt had nothing to do with this project after the 60's. There was only some minor monitoring going on by the early 90's. This is not opinion, these are facts. What these guys did by digging into the tunnel and stairwell is criminal. The tunnel was flooded the first time so they came back almost a year later. What happened here hasn't gone unnoticed.
@@michaelvoorhees5978they didn't get very far so I'd say they did lol
Square profiles really amplify echos to the max. Make it concrete and you're basically in echo heaven.
Im so glad I found this channel great content fellas and happy labor day
Of course, my first thought was that it wouldn’t be too difficult to get dive gear in there. But that would be a stupid dangerous dive.
How so? It's not a deep cave filled with dust. It's concrete walls and clear water.
@@CeceliPS3 Did the water look clear to you when they submerged the GoPro?
@@ljones2087 not like a swimming pool, but clear enough. Those are stair cases and they have enough visibility with a flashlight to see the wall on the other side. Plus, they said it themselves that the water was clear.
@@CeceliPS3 I am no professional diver, I own no dive gear, zero first hand dive experience. I've heard people have dived this; however, I wouldn't dive this even if i was an experienced diver, & especially not past the first floor. Dont get me wrong - I wanna see every square inch of this place so bad I cant stand it too lol. I feel like a submersible drone is the way to go. People die in caves all the time from getting silted out; kick up some dirt & you can't see two feet in front of your face, then you get disoriented, lost, and run out of oxygen. A lot of times, the bodies are never recovered for it being too risky & theyll just seal up the cave and call it a tomb. I get that this isnt a cave. I get that you could probably swim 10-20 ft in any given direction, and probably find walls, floor or ceiling, & stick to it. What if you're 3-7 stories underground, 3-7 stories away from the air pocket, can't see 2 inches in front of your face from being silted out, & then cut your oxygen line on some sharp piece of metal, like the diamond shaped metal grating stuff they were sliding past on their rafts in the very beginning? You'd better have a buddy right next to you, who sees it happen, & one whos willing to buddy breath, who has plenty of oxygen for both of you, & pray they dont snag their line too, & that yall can find your way out before running out of oxygen, or you'd just be dead. Not to mention, this water, theres no telling how radioactive it is; water holds radioactivity like soil. You'd definitely want a wetsuit if you were to even think about it as well, & im sure it would be cold as hell; the etowahs aquifer (and rainwater) is where this water comes from, & I know the etowah river is cold af, even outside in the dead of summer, in 100°+ heat, & that caves are generally way cooler than outside temps.
@@blefnefnef Indeed. Nobody would wanna be caught in that scenario you so well said. People have now created cheap af and really small flying drones. Next step would be diving drones with a powerful enough wifi to go through several layers of concrete.
As a sport pilot and have jumped out of some planes on the famous all you're going to die or whatever I have heard through the last 30 years going down in caves and things natural ancient or recently built underground is completely fascinating. The list of variables of dangers is unbelievable and I'm sure you're very aware of the list or at least a lot of it

All that unpainted concrete underground will set off Geiger counters due to the porous nature of concrete. Radon has a short half life though.
Great video 👍
You would need to setup a pump, and a generator, or power station and let it run for days to clear all the water out.

It wouldn’t take long at all to pump out the old laboratory I would say several days as long as you have at least a 3” hose pumping the water out. I have seen them drain entire lakes and flooded mines in no time, where others said it was impossible. This is where the staff went underground when they would turn the reactor on. I have heard vehicles, common areas with ping pong tables and sleeping quarters are down there.

The flood is either caused naturally or purposefully, I’ve been to many active installations where old areas are randomly flooded intentionally but this I can’t really tell. Cool find, many old nuke silos in California are flooded like that and they are super easy to find
How do you fund your way into these “active areas”?

That could be because the risk of opening it up more is letting more water in.
The honest truth is probably because of time. Not illegal in the sence of the word but you get caught In there by a ranger, they could charge you with anything they could think of. I've not been in a while but more than half the time you crawl out of these places and there's a cop standing there telling you the funs over.
They back filled it to keep people out. If people dig it out they'll just come back and fill it back in.. only the most determined are going to crawl into a tiny hole.
Ever since I saw that video of the Asian dude that found bodies inside some weird abandoned building that looked like this, places like this creep me out 😭

where is it
@@oswurth8774 Ga, but more specifically, dawson forest wma, city of atlanta tract, which is the south end. To be even more specific: REF (Radiation Effects Facility)/reactor site & nearby buildings/tunnels/lab. Used to be known as the georgia national aircraft laboratory; or GNAL, AKA Air force base #67. Opened in '58, closed in '71. Was top secret when it was operational. Basic jist is that we were preparing for the cold war & were trying to do 2 things here: 1. Irradiating (plane) materials with an unshielded nuclear reactor to see how feasible a nuclear powered plane was, & 2. Find out what kind of damage radiation akin to a nuclear bomb does to a forest & the flora & fauna within. The gate is open rn to where you can drive right up to the REF/reactor site; if you cant get past the first black gate you come across, youll need to hike your way there. Driving: Follow the main road (dawson forest rd/reactor rd) past the spot on the right where most people park (where the hot cell building is), & follow the paved road til it dead ends; if you are at the bottom of a hill & see a cul-de-sac & a 10ftx10ftx10ft concrete cube with a dirt mound in front of it, & a big empty field to the left, & a gravel road ahead past it thats gated, you're at the right spot. Currently, the entrances to the REF seem to be blocked off again with a dirt mound & some large rocks; people dig them out occasionally, dnr/wildlife management blocks it again when they notice. The gravel road straight past the REF, the one that's gated, it takes you to an old rail bridge that was detonated, like the one near the hot cell; only concrete pilings on either side of the etowah remain; impassible unless you wanna get wet. DNR/wildlife management/cops patrol occasionally & try to keep folks out of the buildings for safety concerns & preventing lawsuits; dark tunnels, rusty metal, full of water (& mold), with slightly above normal levels of radiation. Haven't been in the tunnels personally, but know right where they are & am glad to show anyone around who's interested, or can link a map. I live right next door to the place & have a ton of free time. Not much to see above ground, but still worth exploring the above ground. The hot cell building is in the main parking lot, it's a huge concrete structure, & is fenced in. Just past it if you keep following the trail its on is a waterfowl refuge, then a fork; cut left & itll take you on a hike towards the reactor, turn right and the short path takes you to a bridge that doesnt exist anymore; just concrete pilings on either side. The pump house is a cool building out there as well, kinda hard to describe how to get to it - but its right before a wooden bridge on your left; blue trail, heading towards beaverdam rd. There's another fenced in area, the cooling off area - but its kinda disappointing; you can only see a tiny bit of concrete foundation & a ton of dirt. There's a couple of old steel bridges with nothing to drive across out there too. Some weird large pipes in the ground waaaay out there on blue trail too. Couple of sets of stairs out there too, like whats in the parking lot, that I assume went to trailers/buildings entrances.

Is this in Dawson Forest? The last time I saw that stairwell at 7:53. water was halfway up those steps.
the water doesn't rise much higher than the level seen in this video. the proof is in the rusted metal electrical junction boxes on the walls. there is a clear rust line where the water stops and in the staircase there is a water line on the paint on the wall showing that it doesn't reach much higher.... at least on average. maybe there has been a rare flood that has raised the level temporarily but it couldn't happen often because it didn't leave a line.
