  • I had a curl specialist tell me that gel is too heavy for wavy hair. On the other hand, most people with wavy hair in the wavy curly forums I follow use gel. So...is gel right for wavy hair? Is mousse better?
I discuss how I use both products, the pros and cons of using mousse on wavy hair, and the pros and cons of using gel with wavy hair.
Let me know your thoughts on this and whether you use gel or mousse on your wavy hair. Or both!

My hair always does well when i use the curlsmith hydro style flexi jelly. Its nice and light weight and i get minimal cast (which i like). Im still exploring mousses but i do find my hair is dry when i use it so i mostly stick to gel

I bought the travel size of that when Ulta had a 50% off sale on it last fall but I have yet to try it! That's awesome that it leaves your hair feeling so good. Makes me want to make it more of a priority to find time to try it. :)

I use gel mostly. But sometimes I’ll layer a mousse with a lighter hold gel. I really need more hold for my straighter pieces so that my waves look more even. I do love the feeling of my hair with mousse better- almost weightless!- but I wish it had more hold because mousse alone doesn’t work for me and feels like a wasted wash day. I’m still looking for my favorite gel. I’m loving the Curlsmith Curl Defining Souffle but I think it makes my scalp itchy. (It’s either that or the cream I’m using because I used an entirely different line up this past time- experimenting with mousse - and I have no itch).

That's a bummer that you've found a gel that works well for you but your scalp might not like it. Hopefully it'll end up being your cream and not the gel so that you can keep using the gel.

@@wavyhaircareblog964 yes! Time will tell. I would love to find something more affordable though. I tried that NYM Curl Talk gel from Ulta with the purple lid, but I think I used too much because I had sticky hair and I’ve been scared to try it ever since haha

@@sharelleshobbies I love that gel but it is definitely intense! lol. I have never used too much of it but I can easily imagine that being unpleasant!

Have you tried any foaming gels? I've used The Doux, but I need to put a bit of gel on anyway. I've given up on all the products and routines, they all take too much time, cost too much money, and are hard to do with my physical limitations. The last 2 wash days, I used shampoo, conditioner, and a very light application of gel. Diffusing always gives me a better wave, but pretty much whatever I do, it looks crummy after the first day, until the next wash day. Right now, I'm trying to use up all this product I've purchased over the last couple years, lol!

I've heard good things about The Doux brand but haven't tried any of their products yet. The only foaming gel I've tried is the Verb curl foam gel but it works well for me. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just that particular product rather than all foaming gels, though. With mousses, some have enough hold for me and others don't, and the same with gels. So I'd expect the same to be true for foaming gels. Honestly, I am not sure that 'foaming gels' are truly unique from other foams or mouses? My guess would be that it's more about marketing than anything but I could be wrong.

@WavyHairCareBlog That makes sense, thank you! I use Eco olive oil gel, and really like it because the cast is really soft. 😊

@@NYCHFAN That's awesome you found what works well for you. I bet your hair likes moisture a lot more than mine! I found that gel too heavy and not enough hold but my hair benefits from really hard hold and is easily weighed down and over-moisturized.
