It would also have helped if Rover bothered to paint the underside of the later minis - the floorpan was usually covered, but most of the front arches were left in primer - I have a 1997 Mini with just 14,000 on the clock - the wheel arches have the lightest coat of primer paint Ive ever seen..... it must have saved Rover at least 50p worth of paint on every car they made. :-) The early cars rusted because of limitations in the paint technology - the later cars rusted because nobody cared about building them to spec......

Our 500 still rusted but it was many years before it started. It was painted all over so perhaps they re-evaluated the corner cutting before production ended. Whatever, it's better now than it was when we first purchased it as a new car.

@@JohnGClancy hi. Good to hear. Mine's a 97 - I've spent a fortune on having the underside painted, so it should last! Part of the fun of owning a mini 😃

Cheap metal! I've got one myself! It's like the fourth bridge but I love it. 🇬🇧👍

I feel the same way and it's interesting that all the cars designed at that time - and quite some time later actually - all suffered rusting issues. Technology has changed today and it's usually electronic faults that send a car to the scrap yard rather than corrosion.

Not quite like a Mini they don't. But this video was intended to point out why the Mini suffered so poorly even up until the end of production in October 2000. The R50 and later versions of MINI do not have the same problem. Times have changed and a car rusting from day one would not be tolerated any longer..

Ho ho. I know what you mean but I think he does explain why in the video. Sadly Neil died 18 months ago but I was able to feature his Rover 75 production line move interview sections in the R40 double Blu-ray/DVD so with that and this little Mini video I hope he will be remembered fondly.
