This video belongs to Harmony Gold Inc, and ADV Films. This is an extract from episode 18 of Robotech - Macross saga. Episode title: "Farewell, Big Brother"
Love Robotech! I remember seeing it for the first time when I was 8. I was completely in love with this show. The battle scenes were mind blowing to me. They were like no other that was on tv in those times. Plus the love triangle between Rick, Lisa and Minmay. It was pretty hardcore for an 8 year old girl in the mid 80's.
I allways Thought of it as Sci-fi Dynasty/Dallas for kids. I was on team Rick and Lisa. Throw in a transforming Battle fortress and some planes for the boys / Nerdy sci-fi /science girl (AKA me) . Lolz
When you say "still", it implies that a weak love story is still better than Twilight's love story. In actuality, Max and Miriya's love story in the series of books was involved and complicated, as they started out as enemies and became infatuated with each other. So, that description doesn't fit here.
Seeing Miriya blast through the city block on the Macrosss is still one of the coolest scenes in this show. I'm thankful that this show got me into anime!
I've always loved how Miriya says "Attack!" at the begging of the battle. Just such a routine/experienced/commanding tone in her voice. They really nailed it with Miriya's voice actor for the American Macross. She did her role very well. I wonder what the conversation went like when she and Max finally discussed this fight....
As much as there was great visuals, drama, action, death, lots of plot twists... what made this cartoon stand out from the others was the f*ckin MUSIC! That battle cue and the heroic theme REALLY brings the cartoon to life. Imagine this scene with generic Rock n Roll music they always used to put in cartoons from the 80's.
It was an uptempo theme. I watched both Robotech, and Sailor Moon, Card captor Sakura. Robotech had the best use of sound to add to the environment. Robotech was more like an animated drama than anything else but the 15 minute slices were a pain. I was watching 4 15 minute series at the time.
Robotech had generic military music. It was diet John Williams. The original Macross had WAY better music and the original japanese Minmay songs are timeless, unlike Robotech's crappy songs.
This "enemy ace" that Khyron feared was actually Rick Hunter. Kyron shot off the arm of Rick's battloid in a fight, and Rick kept coming after him. The encounter actually unsettled Kyron. Miriya just happened to spot Max in battle and correctly identified Max as the actual ace pilot, who had killed so many zentradi in aerial combat.
This whole scenario started b/c of mistaken identity! Rick kicks Khyron's ass, who talks about it to Miriya, Rick lands in the hospital, and Miriya goes looking for Rick (unknowingly) and runs into Max, starting a chain of events culminating in Roy's death and the birth of Dana! Max owes Rick at least two cold cases!
Were they not aware that the Zentradi had females at this point? This scene was drawn and animated so well. It's a shame that they couldn't keep up the same level of quality throughout the series.
+corey vire Roy was a traditional pilot. If you've not noticed he almost never transforms. Max was excellent in all scenarios. Roy never was seen to be very good when transforming, the TV series they never show him transformed hardly ever. He is always in Fighter mode almost the entire time. Not until the Movie, and later Macross Zero do you get to see Roy going all Mecha style, which personally is WAY out of character from the TV version of Roy.
+Kameraden Have to agree. But I still think Roy was better than Max in a way. Roy was a great pilot and Max was a great "Generalist" as it were. In a straight-up dogfight with Roy in Veritech mode, Roy would (IMO) have been the better fighter. And in 'B' Roy could probably have held his own against Max, but I would have given Max in a robot mode fight But perhaps Roy's biggest flaw was his "Traditionalism" He was a great dog fighter and chose to use that style of fighting for the majority of his time in the war (As seen in this show) Not that THAT was the main reason he died, the blood loss and his not recognizing or admitting he was wounded is what did him in.
+tiger klawws Then what is worth a discussion? One could say "It's just a book, it's just a song, it's just a movie, it's just a story, it's just a picture, it's just words..." The point is, just because something is not real does not mean it is not a reflection of character or a case study in human behavior. Analysis makes for development in ones perspective of how one might view a situation they may find themselves in at one time or another.
2:54 OK, the guy gets shot to hell, so does he go to the hospital when he lands, nope, damn fool bleeds out on his girlfriend's couch. That pissed me off as a kid.
I didn't realize Max was flying a VF-1A til I watched this clip. It is no different from a CF right, I mean those are just painted brown rather than blue and white.
wiselink He and his wife flew the J model when they took Komilia to capture the Zentradi factory satellite in Episode 30. Its hard to tell, but you can see at 17:25 ish Millia's has the rabbit ears gun on the head/turret.
***** Although I'm curious why they hadn't been transferred to the S by that point, what with him having been a squadron leader since at least ep 19, Hikaru/Rick was using it when he got shot down during the last battle in ep 27, and Viva Maria(ep 30) takes place 2 years after the war.
What I don't get is why at 3:00 after Roy gets hit by enemy fire, when he returns to the ship why doesn't he go to the hospital to get himself checked out rather than go home and die? :S
Aiko Hikari Still doesn't make sense to me though. I mean how many people would ignore a life threatening injury to go home without being checked out? How come no one else noticed his wounds are told him to go to a hospital? Just seems weird that his wounds are serious enough to kill him, but not serious enough to stop him from having enough strength to get home and not have someone notice he didn't look right. I mean Claudia must have been with him for at least a few hours right? How come she didn't notice that he looked like shit and not right and got help for him?? :S
One theory is as Aiko said. he knew he was going to die, he was tired of the fighting and he just wanted to have himself a nice peaceful evening with the woman he loved.
In the novelization (which you can take as canon or not) there is a scene where he's in triage. However, Capt. Kramer, one of his fellow Skull pilots, is in serious condition and dies. The death shocks him, and compels him to visit Claudia because that's the last thing he wants to do.
clit_niblr036 Again, according to the novelization he was suffering from blood loss. So it could be that he was so out of it that he wasn't able to make clear judgments.
Seriously why would Gloval call off Max mid-battle. You don't take your ace pilot out of the battle. I hold Gloval partially responsible for Fokker's death. Not only he called Max back, Miriya got into SDF-1 as well. This is my favourite scene of this episode, however!
Netflix doesn't have four discs of bonus features and DVDs/blu ray don't require me use my internet on something where the quality tends to crap itself
In the book, this is such a phenomenal fucking fight. And I've always loved how khyron was referring to Rick, yet Miriam hunted down Max. Max would've torn the fuck out of Khyron if it had been him.
Actually, that's not true. She was indeed looking for Max. He was a better pilot than Rot and Rick. He had already started making a name for himself, and already impressed Rick as a fighter pilot.
Mad was said to be the best pilot on the SDF 1 I can go with that but Rick was the best in general because when provoke and there was love ones in danger he would show the enemy that he could take on an entire alien army alone. In the heat of battle when there are people to protect I would take Rick Hunter any day.
If they ever make Robotech live action movie Max and Miriya's story is just as good as Rick and Lisa's...maybe better. Miriya ended up Max's wingman right? The two pretty much laid waste to anything in their way.
haha! all these anime snobs. Without Robotech most of you wouldn't even know Macross existed. This was Americanized and it ended up the way it did purely due to licensing issues. Get over it This show was Americas gateway tv anime with Akira being the movie gateway anime.
It was BARELY Americanized. Of the 3 anime that were merged to form Robocrap, Macross was the least edited. Also, that logic of yours makes no sense. If Macross came to America in it's original form, the results for anime influence in the US would be the same. Better even.
As a teen of the 80's I can say for sure. No it wouldn't have.As a child of the 70's we had Speed Racerand that was it. All we had was Robotech and Voltron in the 80's. It wasn't until the Rbotech and DBZ block on Toonami that Anime really took off. Robotech pulled the 20 somethings, guys like me, back into the audience. Then DBZ hooked the younger kids. Now everyone has been a fan their whole life. haha!
monokhem Seen both, this is bullshit. Macross was the least edited of the 3 anime. Robotech still contained references to "pedophilia" and drugs. Minmay's age was kept at 16 in RT like it originally was in SDFM. Supposedly the uncut versions of Robotech also contain nudity.
corey vire This logic is nonsensical. Literally the only reason Robotech became a thing was because SDFM didn't have 50 or 60 episodes. Things would have been the same if SDFM was kept in its original form. No, it would actually be better because we would have the sequel anime, new model toys and kits, and video games here. You Robocucks are getting excited over yet another comicbook adaption of "teh Macross saga" with traced designs from someone in deviantart while Japan is hyping up for a new sequel anime next year.
No we wouldn't have sequels because Harmony Gold and it's lawyers continue to see to that. They refuse to allow anything new to be released here. I think you missed my point entirely. So i'll try again. This anime is the main reason My generation still watches anime. In spite of it's cobbled together cntinuity it was still light years ahead of anyhting we were watching back then. It was our starter. I was 13 when it came on tv here. I'm 46 now. DBZ is the reason millenials in America began watching anime. Thanks to TOONAMI. I started watching in 1992 when i was Stationed in Hawaii. I had seen it when i stayed in the Barracks at Yokusuka Naval base while on a WESPAC . Robotech holds a special place in the viewing community among the older viewers. People that watched it in it's original run enjoy it. It's also sad that people feel the neeed to toss around insults over a tv show. In case you're wondering I've seen plus. zero, 7, and Frontier. I like them but I still like Robotech for the nostalgia it makes me feel. I still enjoy it. Nothing about the others stuck with me. Oh and that new anime will most likely be on Crunchyroll. So we won't miss anything.
I remember this series from when I was a kid. However, I was only seven when it was on and I think was too young for it. Is this show worth giving a rewatch through adult eyes? Should I go with Robotech or the original Macross? Katajikenai.
It's a great story sometimes a little bland but it killed off characters in the story that was unheard of in any other action cartoon I am aware of when it came to American tv g I Joe was only other action type series at the time
Love Robotech!
Ronnie La Yaquesita same here. love anime ever since.
I allways Thought of it as Sci-fi Dynasty/Dallas for kids. I was on team Rick and Lisa.
Throw in a transforming Battle fortress and some planes for the boys / Nerdy sci-fi /science girl (AKA me) . Lolz
Same here, i was watching tom and jery and looney toones and then this show started on tv. It was mind blowing back in the days🤯😊
My young mind was blown when the heroes don't save the day and the entire Earth is destroyed, that made it my favorite show.
Still a better love story than Twilight.
well yeah, one of the best and most complex love stories. angsty for an 9 year old kid
When you say "still", it implies that a weak love story is still better than Twilight's love story. In actuality, Max and Miriya's love story in the series of books was involved and complicated, as they started out as enemies and became infatuated with each other. So, that description doesn't fit here.
Billy Batson I love Macross and the romance between them. I was just being cheeky.
Did they divorce somewhere in the story?
eventfulnonsense no they stayed together and had 2 kids, Dana and Maia.
One of the best scenes in all of Macross
***** Also one of the saddest episodes. Still get bummed (after all these years) at the end of the episode when Lisa delivers the news to Rick.
Catching Rick, like an idiot playing with a model plane, -_- kinda embarrassing if not for the whole tragedy for all.
Robotech
This not is macross...
This air fight was my first geekasm. Still holds up today. Not just the sequence but the circumstances surrounding it. The best against the best.
Seeing Miriya blast through the city block on the Macrosss is still one of the coolest scenes in this show. I'm thankful that this show got me into anime!
Just a reminder this is the robotech version.
The epic musical score really adds to the awesomeness of the spectacle. Nothing says "IT'S HERO TIME!" like the Robotech theme score.
Watching this part in the original Macross version, just lacks that epicness given by the Robotech theme.
still, I can feel the soul of the artist. in every frame.
"Where is this great enemy ace that Khyron fears so?"
He's in the hospital, with a concussion!
MOTHERFUCKING AWESOME!!!!! Thanks for the upload.
trying to blast each other out of the sky...now THAT my children is courtship! Take notes.
my favorite scene from the series wish it was longer
Loving this!!!! The memories. ....
Same here. I downloaded all of these to my ps3
これを人の手が描き出しているとは、、今見ても神。
Every time I hear Gloval say "and now we know" I expect someone to reply with "and knowing is half the battle!"
G.I. JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOE
still one of the better technical animations of the entire series, lots of love planned and drawn into it
As much as there was great visuals, drama, action, death, lots of plot twists... what made this cartoon stand out from the others was the f*ckin MUSIC! That battle cue and the heroic theme REALLY brings the cartoon to life. Imagine this scene with generic Rock n Roll music they always used to put in cartoons from the 80's.
WorldofWandag Yep, the music made up for bad refactoring of the original series.
The original Macross + Robotech music would be awesome.
Got to agree bro pure amazing stuff.
The original Macross had WAY better music and the original japanese Minmay songs are timeless, unlike Robotech's crappy songs.
monokhem Actually, the original music style was called fusion jazz not rock.
"How I Met Your Mother"
("It's Time to Suit Up!")
I wish they could bring back the full series. This anime is one of my favorites.
Roy Fokker the coolest Fokker around
This scene did more world building for me than any other in Robotech. The moving shot down the street really stood out to me as a kid.
I was always impressed at how Minmei was able to sleep through all of that she must have really been tired.
Great video quality. Awesome scene too.
Loved this scene!
I remember first time watching this as a kid...I can't stop smiling
Roy was just too old school and stuck with being in fighter mode.
Robotech: Making skull paintjobs look good on protagonists' side since 1980s.
The last pineapple salad.
En los años 80' quedé alucinado con este capítulo y triste por la muerte de Roy... 😢
Memorable!
I've also always loved the clever storytelling that the main character is not the strongest pilot. Max FAR outstrips Rick in ability.
What I wouldn't give to see this redone in CG and HD.
Macross Frontier was CG and HD (Blue ray version). Not a redone, though.
absoulutely love this scene to this very day... Macross or Robotech it just screams out awesome. Max for life.
You know what's ironic? If it wasn't for that fool Khyron, Max and Miriya would have never become the couple all Macross fans know and love!
+Alex Kenderian ahh Khyron as cupid.
You both mean Quamzin Kravshera
Rinnosuke Yes, we know. I just used the Americanized name for him, no big deal.
Yeah, I didn't see the Robotech in the title to start (paused the moment I heard a dub)
awww your feelings hurt?
YOU WISH TO DO COMBAT I always loved that scene awesome
And combat they sure did with a whole of kids and a divorce lmao...
We don't speak about Macross 7 in these parts.
Some say that the Macek team scored a point giving the Captain a Slavic accent. "Bruno Gloval" was the character's name in the source material.
Because of this. If I had a daughter if name her Dana Sterling.
Awesome
Yeah, her and max were my favorites..
This is good quality!
Love this kind of action.
True.........Good Point.I like the way she callz him little man & micronian devil....lol
We don't know that Khyron was referring to Rick or Max. It isn't made clear.
Remember this was the 80s...so ahead of its time...
"679"
as soon as I saw minmei I felt a cold shiver..
As soon as I saw her, I remembered this series wasn't entirely flawless
You cant have Robotech without Min-Mei. She is an integral part of the experience... no matter how horrific.
Nostalgia all over again. :)
one of the best scenes in a drama
Miriya & Max fight in the skies battlesuit vs veritech, then in a video arcade, finally hand to hand combat, best scenes of the Macross saga
Were they not aware that the Zentradi had females at this point?
This scene was drawn and animated so well. It's a shame that they couldn't keep up the same level of quality throughout the series.
They had to outsource many episodes to Korea, sadly, to keep up with the weekly schedule. The best drawn episodes are all Japanese.
No talk of Rick Hunter getting shot down while trying to fly a bicycle?
I found it Funny the singled out Max when Roy was just as dangerous.
+corey vire Roy was a traditional pilot. If you've not noticed he almost never transforms. Max was excellent in all scenarios. Roy never was seen to be very good when transforming, the TV series they never show him transformed hardly ever. He is always in Fighter mode almost the entire time. +Kameraden it's just a cartoon
What's interesting to note is that Khyron was actually referring to Rick, when he told Miriya of the pilot she could not best.
NOW WE KNOW!
And knowing is half the battle!
Best show EVER!
Lowers his gun like a badass. Max was the best.
2:54 OK, the guy gets shot to hell, so does he go to the hospital when he lands, nope, damn fool bleeds out on his girlfriend's couch. That pissed me off as a kid.
That never made sense to me. How did the hangar people and Claudia not see it!?
I'm amazed what my imagination did as a young teenager to make this scene cooler than it actually was. Lol.
Some people lose the good taste over the years.
Could somebody tell me what is the name of the soundtrack that begins at 3:51 and finish at 4:10. Thank you in forward.
Great series.
such a sick episode
Roy Fokker still laughing even at this age..
I didn't realize Max was flying a VF-1A til I watched this clip. It is no different from a CF right, I mean those are just painted brown rather than blue and white.
wiselink He always used the same blue VF-1A throughout the series.
Hr Gwea Yeah for some reason I thought he had a VF-1J. I think my TV Bandai 1/55 max and mirya are VF-1J
wiselink He and his wife flew the J model when they took Komilia to capture the Zentradi factory satellite in Episode 30.
He'll get his iconic 1J in another couple of episodes.
Max is love, Max is the best!
If I have to think that this was Fokker's doom, I get sad.
Good scene...txs
What I don't get is why at 3:00 after Roy gets hit by enemy fire, when he returns to the ship why doesn't he go to the hospital to get himself checked out rather than go home and die? :S
Aiko Hikari
Still doesn't make sense to me though.
One theory is as Aiko said. he knew he was going to die, he was tired of the fighting and he just wanted to have himself a nice peaceful evening with the woman he loved.
He had too much pride to admit that he got injured in battle so he didn't take himself to get care from the medics.
So romantic
This is when Roy gets fatally injured too, sad ending to the episode...
The cut out the part where she remembers kyron sayins that his experience proves the microniens possess but one superb pilot.
back when cartoon characters were smart.
Seriously why would Gloval call off Max mid-battle. You don't take your ace pilot out of the battle. I hold Gloval partially responsible for Fokker's death. Not only he called Max back, Miriya got into SDF-1 as well. This is my favourite scene of this episode, however!
2020 awesome
4:22-4:28 still looks soo cool after all these years
Scena CAPOLAVORO!!!
Max and Miriya Sterling are Mr. and Mrs. Smith Robotech version
My mind is made up. This show looks bad ass. I'm buying the set!
don't its on netflix
Buy the DVD, it comes with a whoppin 4 disc bonus feature set. It's awesome
Uncle Yuu At first I thought you were pranking me so I checked and yes, the box set is looking a little more worth it.
How do we know he was talking about Rick and not Max?
Too bad Miriya, you should have listened to good ole' Kyron! Pity he was talking about Rick though...lol
In Robotech yes, he was talking about Rick.
In the original Macross version he was talking about Max.
this is WHY WE CAN'T HAVE PERSONALIZED COLOR SCHEMES!!!!!!!!!!!!
2 dislikes? get out master of robotechnia; u don`t are welcome here pls.
Max Sterling was the Truth!
Miriaya was actually looking for Roy Fokker since he was the best pilot on the SDF-1
Actually, that's not true. She was indeed looking for Max. He was a better pilot than Rot and Rick. He had already started making a name for himself, and already impressed Rick as a fighter pilot.
+Andre Jones Based on pure experience alone, Roy was the better pilot. Max was naturally gifted and better than Rick, but not better than Roy.
I can accept that argument. Bottom line, this was a great toon. Lol
Andre Jones
I grew up with this my friend, and I gladly accept your opinion! One of my favorites of all time!
Speaking of which, how did Roy die anyway?
Mira should have stayed her original size the next time she meet Max.
she should of stay normal sized when they got married.
Why the hell isn't max the lead skull squadron after roy dies?
Rick had seniority.
Max became the commander in macross 7
Because Rick outranked him making him next in line.
何か変だと思ったら音楽が違うのか
Mad was said to be the best pilot on the SDF 1 I can go with that but Rick was the best in general because when provoke and there was love ones in danger he would show the enemy that he could take on an entire alien army alone. In the heat of battle when there are people to protect I would take Rick Hunter any day.
Hikaru Ichijo. Not Rick Hunter....
Yeah, and do not forget Max Genius as well (sarcasm)
I am sure that Max would have been able to do the same.
He was definitely the best in general.
Though we are hooked more into Transformers, I think that Macross / Robotech is much better.
Their divorce will get messy.
In the original Macross series, all the Zentradi attacking were female.
Max Sterling = Cam Clarke = ...... Liquid SNAAAAAAAAAKE!!!!
Estos son mejores que la saga de transformer
I love ❤️ shows 📺
Max y Miriya Sterling son la version Robotech de Sr. y Sra. Smith
I watched Macross rather than Robotech growing up. Oh god. The music in Robotech is horrendous.
The original sounds are better than the remastered one
how its called the song of the dogfight?
If they ever make Robotech live action movie Max and Miriya's story is just as good as Rick and Lisa's...maybe better. Miriya ended up Max's wingman right? The two pretty much laid waste to anything in their way.

So we won't miss anything.
Minmay = IQ of a rock.
I remember this series from when I was a kid. However, I was only seven when it was on and I think was too young for it.
Is this show worth giving a rewatch through adult eyes? Should I go with Robotech or the original Macross?
Katajikenai.
It's a great story sometimes a little bland but it killed off characters in the story that was unheard of in any other action cartoon I am aware of when it came to American tv g I Joe was only other action type series at the time
+Kenshin Himura Watch both and enjoy them.
+corey vire you know what's funny. the creator of Macross said he liked the Robotech version better, mainly cause it told a better story.
