  • We were lucky to see someone doing some giant Fraser River Sturgeon fishing on our paddle trip down the Harrison River from Harrison Hot Springs to Harrison Mills, BC Canada. There were lots of salmon, bald eagles & harbor seals too.
The most famous Fraser River fish is the giant white sturgeon, and this related variety is also found in the nearby Harrison River.

The water looks pretty clear! I'd love to snorkel there.

Very nice, how long did it take? Looks quite shallow for a lot of it, been thinking of the same trip with my Hobie pedal kayak.

+Rick Robison Thanks Rick. We took our time, probably about 5 hours. But that was at a pretty leisurely pace, including a stop for lunch. You could probably do it in three hours if you just paddled straight through, although the trip is so beautiful, why rush? lol
The shallows were due to two things. First, it was the last day of September, so the water is quite low already for the year. Second, the really shallow part was an offshoot that we took to see the salmon (by staying left of a big island before arriving in the Harrison Mills area). The last time we did the trip (you can see that video here: ua-cam.com/video/mnvpuM2R7TA/v-deo.html ), we stayed out in the main part of the Harrison all the way and if was never shallow. If you're going to do it this year, be sure to stay clear of the flats before Sandpiper Golf Course, since after October first, it's a restricted area due to the eagles and salmon.
Also, come on out to the Eagle Festival next month! You can look for me there.... the guy in the "Harrison" eagle costume. LOL I was in there last year too. My big moment was documented here: ua-cam.com/video/PibyxkyraKk/v-deo.html

Hey, I have to ask. I see you Started at the boat marina area at Harrison. Then to Harrison River. Where abouts did you get off? I had gone out Kayaking on Harrison 2 weeks ago. And I was seriously interested in going down the river there. How far down do you think its safe to Kayak for?

Hi Helms! Sorry for the delayed response. Just saw your note. We did indeed put in on the lake, right across from the hotel & spa. We took out at a private landing just before Sandpiper Golf Course (on the same side of the river... on the right). We've paddled further many times, under the Lougheed Highway bridge just past the gold course (immediately after which there's a public boat ramp on the right). From there, we've paddled out into the bay just past the logging operation, and over in front of Kilby. Friends of ours have paddled further over to the confluence of the Fraser, and they said it's fine, especially when the water level is low like it is this time of year (they're a couple of 60-ish-year-old ladies, and not especially brace, so if they say the Fraser/Harrison confluence is no big deal, it's surely fine). We just haven't paddled to it ourselves, yet. The only thing required is a car ride back to the launch point to pick up our car, since there's no paddling back up the river once you go down. ;-)

Yeah. Thanks lol. Ive been mapping this route out for a couple of weeks now. I just did an Island camp at Long Island there. And I really want to do the Harrison river there. But with this sudden temp drop over the last few days and snow/rain. I think I may have to hold off until springish time. I dont want to get carried away by rising waters lol

Sounds like a good plan! It's freezing this morning. :(
