I don’t know enough to technically analyze his chord/note choices. However, I do know that his style is unique and mesmerizing. He often seems to be wandering off somewhere else but effortlessly gets right back into the melody.
I was lucky to see Gillian & Dave in Chico, CA (USA). For their final encore, they stepped away from the microphones, came down off the stage, and sang an a capella version of "Long Black Veil." Complete silence from the 1200 people in the audience. One of the best concert moments ever.
Saw them in Pioneertown, CA, for the Harrow & Harvest tour, same, one of the best concerts ever. Acoustic, under the stars, at Pappy & Harriet's. Amazing. And their final song was White Rabbit from Jefferson Airplane, full psychedelic light show, just jaw-dropping! My husband became a fan too after that one.
Gillian and Dave are a recent discovery of mine. They just popped up on You Tube for me and I was amazed. Their harmonies are terrific. But, the thing that attracted me was Dave's Guitar skills. In my humble opinion, he is one of the greatest original stylists of all time, right up there with Chet, Jerry, Merle and Roy Clark. His Power Acoustic playing is so very different than I have ever seen elsewhere. And Gillian's song writing skills are special too. Miracle to me that they haven't attained a lot more attentions than they have with their haunting mountain music playing sounds.

@@GillianHWelch Gillian, I am so honored that you even notice me. I am just a tyro guitar picker at the age of 76 and a lover of your type of music with Dave.
The first time I played this album for a friend of mine who's a professional singer, he said, "Ooo, I like the way that vocal's double tracked." I chuckled and said, "No, that's two different people. And they usually record live, standing around a single mic." He couldn't believe it. Harrow and Harvest is one of the most astonishing albums I've ever heard.
I mean, by the time they made this they had spent the majority of 20+ years not just making music together, but basically spending most of their time together! They are really so much more than the sum of their parts.
Yes, they are awesome. David is one of my favorite guitarists and and she is just spot on perfect. Seen them live a couple times and they are so organic and honest and beautiful. No auto tuning required. 👍👍👍
Some info: I came here searching for a Gillian Welch song (I'm an old fan), and had never seen this performance before. But I can tell that it's from the Swedish tv-show "Jills veranda" (Jill's porch). Jill Johansson is the dark haired woman at 1:59. She is a Swedish country singer and the presenter of the show, where she invites other artists to the US to listen to country/americana. The blonde woman sitting next to her is Veronica Maggio, one of Swedens biggest (and best imo) pop singers. I haven't seen this episode, but I'm guessing Maggio might be a fan of Gillian & Dave.
These two are a big part of the Americana or Alt Country sound that really took off in the mid 1990s . I think it's a wonderful return to roots music that's still going strong in 2020
I absolutely love this tune. It's haunting and beautiful. I love everything about these two. If anyone out there hasn't looked into more of their work, just stop what your doing and git on it. You won't be disappointed.
For those that down know, this was from a Swedish television show where they bring Swedish people to America to show them Americana and folk music because they have a thriving folk “Americana” scene in Sweden
Thanks for your analysis of this performance. I first heard them on the tribute album to Gram Parsons "Return of the Grievous Angel" where they covered Hickory Wind. The austerity of their interpretation prevented me to perceive how wonderful they were. Later I bought Time the Revelator and fell under their spell, definitely. Nothing compares to the symbiosis of their voices for sure, but there must be something beyond technique. Maybe it is the feeling of hearing something so unique and so beautiful which might never happen again that makes my throat feel like it's shrinking and watery my eyes.
Their performance of 2004 by the BBC has some great material, Dave's solo in revelator is an awesome piece of playing, but as you stated their synchronicity is the underlying foundation that makes the performance an absolute joy

Well you've done it again Phil. One of the great things about your channel is discovering artists you wouldn't normally come accross. Beautiful sound. Thank you..
This is beautiful. The song is so pure of sound, but your detailed analysis teases out so many elements, that we see how complex it really is. Thank you! I also just saw for the first time the analysis you did of Billy Strings, a new artist for me. What fantastic music! Your analysis covers so much in terms of the conversation his music has with earlier influences and how innovative it is. Thanks for introducing us to it!
A warm, soulful breeze. Intimate. Thanks for the introduction, much appreciated. ❤️ 🌟 I watched this with you the first time holding my breath to not make a sound as I listened, moved beyond words. They seem to play with one heart and one soul. I watched this over and over again. And cried seeing the vulnerability and talent of these two musicians. I was blown away by your analysis. You said they played on such a deep level (technically), but you also recognized the deep connection between them. No one could have done this any better than you did. ❤️🌟
They’ve been playing together forever, so that’s probably the best means of achieving such seamless performance. On a side note, I place this in the “Folk” genre rather than country. Also, Dave isn’t just playing a pentatonic minor scale. It’s almost like jazz. He throws in notes that are not strictly in key, nor a part of any mode. Rather, where some guitarists - like me - will slide up or down to my target note, Dave dos not. He picks the notes leading to his target note and it gives his playing this tension/resolution quality that sets his playing apart from many of his peers. Back to their ability as a duet. If you play with someone for over 30 years, you’re going to feel like where a phrase will end, how it’s annunciated, how the phrase is phrased. These two are so obviously in tune with each other I’d be more impressed were they to make a mistake. I don’t mean to sound as though I’m trying to take anything away from what they’ve achieved whatsoever, rather, I’m marveling at what can happen when two people (or more) have the necessary chemistry, technique and love for what they’re doing. Incredible things happen under those conditions and here we have a shining example of it.
Great analysis Fil as always. Gillian and Dave have been together for ever. They are one of my favorite Americana artist. Check out Buddy Miller,Wide river to cross or Shelter me! Buddy is a great acoustic guitar player. Great song writer also.
The vocals are so tight it took me a while of listening to Gillian's music to realize that Dave was even there. They sign as one voice that is so incredibly rich and deep.
So happy to hear your thoughts on this video. Discovered it a while back, and can't tell you how many times I've watched it, and played along with it. There's something stunning about a performance so stripped down and yet so elegant when two musicians are just locked into each other's playing and singing. Still gives me goosebumps!

Nice tune and beautiful harmonizing. So much depth and so much soul in this song a great tune to keep you captivated. Oh man I love the little fill ins excellent. A great analysis Fil and thank you for sharing.
Gillian Welch gets a lot of respect. She's talented, she plays well, she writes well, she's a good singer, and performs tastefully. Gillian Welch is true artist. I hope that more people discover her and she gets the recognition she deserves. I always thought she'd be a good pairing with Robben Ford. I've watch them both. I think they would be good together.
Over here in the U.S. this falls into the really broad spectrum of the americana genre. Funny that country music now is just some kind of rap pop. Mission accomplished Rocked
Greg Kunkel I adore what they call Americana. I think it should be called “Local “. It is often specific to time and place, and we have it in Canada, where we call it Roots, or SingerSongwriter. To me, it’s folk music. All areas have Local music, so the name works in that sense.

Wow... that is a mesmerising performance, I don't think many artists could get that tight and captive a performance if they had a month in a studio, and this was live in a café... I have loved Gillian and Dave for years, it is my type if music, but of course I am not as talented as ether of them, but I do what I do :). Thanks for the analysis Fil, you put in to words why this performance is so captivating.
Been listening to these artists since mid 90’s, was enthralled from day 1, so different. Watch one of their concert videos Fil to get a real perspective of their vocal and instrumental capabilities. Dave Rawlins Machine, his side project is like their duo with a bass and mandolin played by John Paul Jones ( Led Zep ) to a very high standard. Dave’s leadwork is at times just mesmerising. Thank you for this appreciation.
Another good one, Fil. Absolutely love your critique/analysis on videos. You explain the techniques, not criticizing. That is the difference between you and so many other. Rock! PS, you have very nice/kind eyes.
Yep, it sounds like an Archangel has latched onto the song, the Harmony is so vibrant. I hope that Gillian and David come down under to Australia, Sydney post 2024, so that I can experience their Art and Magic live... ❤❤❤
When Gillian and Dave play with a few other people they go out as The Dave Rawling Machine, there is a perfect rendition of Led Zeppelin's Going to California with a band that includes John Paul Jones on mandolin! Dig it out, it's near perfection.
Note how they face each other not the audience, helps with sounding like one voice. Feels like you are watching them just playing for themselves not to an audience
Also, if you research a bit you would discover they have played together since Uni. They are absolutely in sync , glued together old timey perfection. My favourite act. Great song writers. I think they are married, definitely in a relationship, certainly soul mates. I love it.
Really like these two together. Gillian produced some great music over the years (besides her gig in 'Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?').😉 That guitar that David is playing is a 1930's Epiphone Olympic. I had one almost identical to it that I inherited from my Mom several years ago, and did some restoration work on it, reset the action, etc. Ended up selling it to a good friend that was really into folk music and Gillian and David's stuff in particular.😎 Great review Fil, thanks!😁
Happy and surprised to see you doing these guys! I've been lucky enough to see them several times. They are so tight. Their shows are amazing!. As I'm sure you know by now, her name is pronounced with a hard "g".
Holy crap I absolutely love them. ❤️ My favorites are Annabelle and Caleb Meyer. You should annualize those songs. I love your taste in music bro. Keep up the great work. 🎵
It just doesn't get any better than this - sheer beauty. Also recommended is their version of Railroad Bill, where their voices alternate and join perfectly.
Beautiful pairing! FANTASTIC vocals and acoustic work. Peaceful feel. Put me in mind of early CSN&Y somehow. Same vibe. Loved it! ♥️ Great spot on analysis once again Fil. Thanks!😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
I've loved the minimalist duo and trio (and more! A Cappella & with a band) ever since being weened on the Everly Brothers, Peter Paul & Mary, Kingston Trio, Brothers Four, Simon & Garfunkel etcetera- and Gillian Welsh & Dave Rawlings have always astounded me with their relaxed form precision honesty in artistic expression. The same is true of the Milk Carton Kids. Yet, both are sometimes a hard sell to some who become either bored or just incognizant of this tempered subtlety of minimalist harmonic beauty. I'm so glad Fil Henley found GW&DR to be so positively reviewed, as I respect his equally precise and informed commentary regarding the form and quality of any given musical 🎶piece, even when being unbiased critically means finding the inherent faults, fakes and foibles and laying them bare to be considered. I play music just enough to be able to appreciate those who really can. Mr. Henley, keep "Fil"ling us in..., the most astute musicians I know agree with, and appreciate, your analytical findings and endeavors, as do I... Keep up the good work! Gillian & Dave, keep on keepin' on!...your kind of music will be played if & when all the lights go out; and will be inspiring and learned from - before, during and after. 💙, Karl 🤠
So glad you covered this video of Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. Every song they do is impeccable. I see someone suggested Rodriogo y Gabriela. That's a great idea. Fantastic, exciting guitarists. I'd also like to see your analysis of any song by Kitty, Daisy & Lewis and one on Pokey LaFarge.
Once again I couldn't click fast enough. I love Gillian Welch. It is very clear that her parents who wrote show tunes for the "Carol Burnett Show" had absolutely no influence on her music :-) That girl from West Hollywood does a great job with traditional Appalachian Folk. David Rawlings is an amazing guitarist. BTW, she uses a hard "G" in her first name. Thanks for this analyses.
They are and have been some of my favorite. Their blend is magical, and now you need to check out The Milk Carton Kids!! They take this to even another level, I didn't think it would be possible, but they do! Their song Michigan is a good one to get started with but anything would do, yet Michigan is haunting and has all their qualities all blend in together!! Please go for it! TY!!
Harvest and Harrow is a must have album from this duo. I'd love to see them live. Thanks for featuring them. I love how you love so many styles of music.
Another great analysis, Fil. Saw these folks a few years ago and was struck by how obviously intensely they listen to each other and to what they are doing, in the moment.
This is absolutely beautiful! Reminds me of Crosby and Nash I’ve... The Lee Shore..... gosh I’m in love!!!!!! Thank you Fil! The world is a better place because of you!
Great points. It is amazing to hear them. Such complexity and detail. Rhonda Vincent's daughter came and sang at my mother-in-law's funeral this past week. I think she will be as good as her mom. -One to watch (or listen to, I should say). I wish I had that kind of vocal control.
I have been a fan since the Revival album. I think this duo contributed greatly to the 'roots revival's in country music. When I was young we used to have a monthly BBQ and bluegrass jam. There were so many great players and singers whose music was never recorded, but it was part of the fabric of my life growing up. Thanks for the great video and analysis. Reminded me of home!🤙🙏
Dave Rawlings is quietly one of the greatest lead guitarists on earth.
Agreed . . 100%
He just makes it look so damn easy........
I don’t know enough to technically analyze his chord/note choices. However, I do know that his style is unique and mesmerizing. He often seems to be wandering off somewhere else but effortlessly gets right back into the melody.
Amen
They are amazing! If you see them live, Gillian will occasionally play dave's guitar; she proves it's Dave's talent and not his cheap old guitar!
I was lucky to see Gillian & Dave in Chico, CA (USA). For their final encore, they stepped away from the microphones, came down off the stage, and sang an a capella version of "Long Black Veil." Complete silence from the 1200 people in the audience. One of the best concert moments ever.

Wow Fil this is really special! They have an amazing musical connection! I was totally mesmerised! Unreal! Cheers Mario! 😀👌🤘
LIKE I SAID, MUSIC ALL GENRES REPAIR THE SOUL AND REACHES ACROSS ALL THE HATE LINES WE LIVE IN TODAY , THANKS FIL
Holy crap I absolutely love them. ❤️
My favorites are Annabelle and Caleb Meyer.
Thanks Fil, between the pain meds they gave me in the hospital and this analysis you're putting me to sleep. I thank you! Very pretty song. ❤❤❤
💙,
Karl 🤠
P.S. insert "worthy of being" in the 2nd paragraph between "to be...&...so positively reviewed"

TY!!
I've seen the Mill Carton Kids. They are solid and put on a great show. But they are to Gillian and David as the Dave Clark Five were to the Beatles.
What a great performance, and what a great review, yet again, Fil!! Cheers, mate!! :)
Layer on layer on layer of talent . Wow
Grat Review. These two are transcendental. magic.
Beautiful song..love their harmony!
Enlightening choice Fil , great slice of musicality, Jeff in LA USA
Valley of Tears with Gillian, Dave and Solomon Burke is a great clip. Maybe you could react to that one.
Harvest and Harrow is a must have album from this duo. I'd love to see them live. Thanks for featuring them. I love how you love so many styles of music.
Very beautiful song, seems to have a haunting melody, love the harmonics by Dave! Thanks Fil.
