I had the privilege of having him teach me how to play "Purple Haze", when we were growing up. I've also had the privilege of , very briefly playing his 32' Epiphone Olympic that you see in this video. It sounds like no other guitar I've ever played. It's also a bear to play. No BS, I'm his cousin, but I respect him as an influence on my playing as well. Plus, Gillian is one of the nicest people I've ever met. Thanks for posting this, I haven't seen this interview.
thanks, Ive seen them play and met them a few times after the shows. really nice folks. got to see them on the big surprise tour in phily. with old crow, felice brothers, justin townes earle, and they had a older gentleman play organ with them. and all the performers played some songs all together. very cool. heard sweet tooth for the first time there. also my girlfriend i listened to soul journey everyday like a ritual for the entire summer, and longer...it seemed like a revelation to me when that came out. like a new band sound for them. my friends and i would play everything is free... and i was always so haunted by time the revelator ... david seems like a mix of so many friends i have had in different towns. all music players ... very cool sharing thanks
that's awesome, he seems like a really down to earth dude. I'm a big fan. Epiphone came out with a series of reissues from the 30's, including this one, and I found it for $300 at a pawnshop. Obviously not as cool as his original '32, but it's a sweet little guitar.
Remember: there's always going to be somebody way better than you, so instead of being jealous and discouraged, love and appreciate what they do. Then go and do your own thing, and someday someone will be jealous of you.
I can only hope that one day he and Gillian come over to Western Australia. Between them they have opened up a new world of music to me, much in the same way that Leo Kottke did some years ago. David and Leo often close their eyes and play things that most of us mere mortals can only dream about. The best musicians seem to be the most humble.
David has introduced jazz to country music in a way that makes the instrument capture attention of a listening audience that stands up to Gillian's powerful voice and enhances both artists. Bravo!
That mid-30' Epiphone F-hole arch top is one of those instuments that, like some Stratavarius, has a totally unique sound. In the hands of a genius that is equally uniqe and amazing it is the sound of life itself. Davis Rawlings and the Epiphone. Life and beauty.
The review that Dave references around 4:20 is actually one to which I wrote a rebuttal. I had recently seen Dave and Gillian at Largo in Los Angeles. I was still thrumming with musical awe when I read the claim about the guitars being out of tune, and I knew I could not let the comments of a benighted critic stand. I was polite but direct.
Intervals in major and minor 2nds can be hard on the ears, but are essential to help us pass from one mode or theme to another. David = real live guitar hero.
this is sooo great, would love if you put out tab for a bunch of your solos, Dave Rawlings... you're such an inspirational guitar play and gillian amazing too... thanks for all the beauty you put in the world.
I learned the guitar parts on the first two records by ear, which was a challenge, trying to get the sound, and the inversions of each chord, and where to put the capo. But once you get that the rest is smooth sailing fun.
I have always really enjoyed the way David plays, like a cross between banjo, bluegrass and jazz! Those clangy notes and close intervals he plays are a major part of the attraction to his playing, when put with Gillian's playing and singing it somehow sounds just "right". Keep up the good work, now I am really curious to hear what his newer archtop sounds like compared to his old favorite - it will ALL sound like him in the end!
Interesting that Dave said that the Bandmaster head was meant to be good for steel players. It was my first amp and I bought it in about 1970 from a steel player. (Wish I still had it!). Great interview thanks.
That guitar sounds sweeter than anything I ever heard. Best music lesson for free now. That's what I said. Fortune lady please stick around w/David and Gillian.
david rawlings is such a talent, and great interview getting him to share so much…but gosh AG, you guys should up your game a bit on video quality and editing.
I too remember someone making a comment about the guitar being out of tune. I laughed to myself thing hey bud you might want to spend a little more time getting initiated to the Rawlings Sound. David is not only a genius musician and songwriter he is the King of bending strings and the consummate New Note Finder.
I didn't edit it. It's just something I picked up from a guitar site and thought to share. AS IS. But hey, some people will always just criticize. *shrug*
"something like that.. it's just real simple" mhm... simple like ordering pizza simple? I DON*T THINK SO! damn this man, i think he absorbs other people's ability to play guitar by just being around them, leaving them as empty shells with only the ability to strum simple chords... he's the devil I tell ya...
This guy just makes me so happy just listening and watching him freak out about music makes me smile.

@Zahir Dexter yup, have been using flixzone} for months myself :D

Just dicovered this guy. Love it. Some people just can't fathom dissonance , i guess.
How can you not love this guy and his playing?

what an amazing man... you've just got to love him and Gillian
National treasures, both of them.

Craig Fleming - I’m glad you felt duty-bound to right that wrong!
I wish could 'Like' this a million times. Loving this stuff!
Intervals in major and minor 2nds can be hard on the ears, but are essential to help us pass from one mode or theme to another. David = real live guitar hero.
He’s awesome. My kind of wonder and attitude. And that Epiphone looks like a cereal box but sounds like a miracle in his hands.
Late to the game on this interview. I watched it 3 times now. Thank you so much. What a fun interview and straight up guy.

Great to hear him talk about his work...thanks!
Seriously a musical genius
love his exuberance
thank you so much for posting this! this is all sorts of awesome.
I think I may've requested this. Brian found it and posted on a forum. Great stuff Jounster. Thanks very much!
What a great artist, he is amazing

Where is the rest of this footage? I would love to have the uncut interview, this is one of the greatest things on UA-cam.
Thanks so much for posting this jounster!!! You rock.....HARD!!!
David Rawlings!!!
Interesting that Dave said that the Bandmaster head was meant to be good for steel players. It was my first amp and I bought it in about 1970 from a steel player. (Wish I still had it!). Great interview thanks.

Dave is such an amazing under appreciated player
Dave Rawlings is one of those people I'd love to sit down and jam with.
Odličan interview. Uživao sam.
learned so much from this vid. Thanx for posting this.
Super charisma!
Genius!
Soooo cute!! Love the way David talks
david rawlings is such a talent, and great interview getting him to share so much…but gosh AG, you guys should up your game a bit on video quality and editing.
man, that guitar projects well
This is a David Rawlings mix-tape/highlight reel/the guitar equivalent of the Maradona warm-up video, if Maradona could talk about his genius.
Cat is just a natural. That’s hard to beat
when he says Allston Music did he mean Mr Music?
I too remember someone making a comment about the guitar being out of tune. I laughed to myself thing hey bud you might want to spend a little more time getting initiated to the Rawlings Sound. tuning your b string to your open e- skill
It's an Old Epiphone Olympic Archtop
you are my idol. you ruined me playing music. ill just listen my king. i some how know you dont like that.
This isn't an interview it is a highly edited chopped up video. How about showing the interview instead of this chopped up mess.
I didn't edit it. It's just something I picked up from a guitar site and thought to share. AS IS. But hey, some people will always just criticize. *shrug*
He’s so high I imagine they had to cut out some off topic rambling.
i expected him to have this thick Georgia accent.
+axel hose He's from Rhode Island, but he doesn't have a Rhode Island accent either!
"something like that.. it's just real simple"
mhm... simple like ordering pizza simple? I DON*T THINK SO! damn this man, i think he absorbs other people's ability to play guitar by just being around them, leaving them as empty shells with only the ability to strum simple chords... he's the devil I tell ya...
This video makes me feel dumb.
his playins cool , but he dow arf like to hear the sound of his own voice spoutin chite....
