  • The Good Doctor shows who is the class of field. Harvey Pack narrates. Watch for Dr. Fager's ears pricking wildly nearing the wire.

The Vosburgh is a 6F sprint with horses running with much more early pace than what normally occurs in longer races. The Doctor could beat the best sprinters in the country at his time, but might not go right to the front in such a race, but could also carry that speed over a route.

I thing that Forego was the most versatile great horse, but that is not saying anything against Dr.Fager. When it comes to rating him Braulio Baeza said "I rated him a few times, but he resented it and he fought me." Most race horses just want to win, even the great ones (Seattle Slew, Buckpasser), so they start pulling themselves up when they get the lead; a very few horses, as you can see here, want to destroy the opposition. The Doctor was a destroyer, so a rabbit was the only option.

@STU676 I agree. I think he's top 3 at least, maybe the best ever. Fager and Kelso slightly underrated, Citation and Secretariat slightly overrated...

That is now it is a six-furlong race as it is the main prep for the BC Sprint. It was run at seven furlongs for many years and only shortened in the last decade.
Dr. Fager was superior up to 1 1/4 Miles for sure. Nerud never gave him the chance to go 1 1/2 miles and longer.

Dr. Fager may not be the best horse of all-time but he is probably the most versatile great horse.

Worst camera work ever. How often does a cameraman decide to let the lead horse run out of frame while he concentrates on the place and show horses?
