- Waquoit, ridden by Chris McCarron, held off a late stretch drive by Broad Brush, the favorite, for an upset victory yesterday in the 53d running of the Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs in Boston. Waquoit, the top horse in New England last year, broke out immediately to lead the six-horse field and stayed in front until the sixteenth pole. Broad Brush, ridden by Angel Cordero, put a head in front, but McCarron urged Waquoit on and won by a nose. Broad Brush carried topweight of 126 pounds, conceding from 4 to 17 pounds to the rest of the field. Waquoit, who carried 117 pounds, was timed in 1:49 for a mile and an eighth and returned $10.60 for $2 to win. He earned $124,560 for his owner, Joseph Federico, from the total purse of $207,600. Finishing third was Tour d'Or, ridden by Tammi Campbell.

Wow, what a field! An amazing race. Thanks for posting. That’s a classic.
This was a heartbreaker. I adored Broad Brush. Thank you for this. This Mass Cap was a stellar field.

did you ever see Broad Brush in the PA. Dervy? You have to try to find it.....'86 PA. Derby
Waquoit just refused to let Broad Brush by even after dueling the sharp Tour D'or. Inspiring.
R.I.P. Track Announcer Jim Hannon (1928-2020)
Noticeable here is the use of the multi-colored saddlecloths basically as we know them today. Suffolk had to be one of the first tracks to do that and you would not have realized unless you knew the names this was from 1987.
This was about a tough a field as you could get for the MassCap, especially given this was NOT a Grade 1 race at any point, whether originally or in its revival. This also was not long before Suffolk Downs almost closed the first time later in 1987 (it would close for two years at the end of 1989 before reopening in 1992 and then closing for good in 2019).
RIP Jim Hannon, the track announcer in the old days of Suffolk Downs before it closed the first time.
I’ve just noticed the numbers are the harness racing colors on the gate
Tammi Cambell (rider of 3rd place Tour d`Or) is now know as Tammi Piermarini. On Monday August 22, 2011 Mrs. Piermarini rode Suger Trade to victory in the 3rd race at Suffolk Downs, thus becoming the 5th female jockey to win 2000 races. 1586 of those 2000 wins came at Suffolk: a good career for the Massachusetts native.
Tremendous horse race....
RIP Jim Hannon.
She had only been riding a few years at this point, but one of her strong points as I remember was getting a front runner to relax. She gave Tour D'Or a good ride that day, in no way being outridden by the Hall of Fame riders on the other horses.
How much did track announcer Jim Hannon have on the race?
