This was great. It solves a big problem. There are 10 times as many guitar players as bass players. This solution may not replace a bass, but if you can't find someone to play bass, letting the guitarists share bass duties is feasible.
As for using Analog Octavers with guitar, keep in mind that they won’t do polyphonic, they also have some tracking issues, on the other hand, within those limits they do sound better for single notes than their digital counterpart. For bass the real deal sounds best.
Some guitar processors do this trick perfectly, without any synth tones, sounding somewhat like classic jazz Fender, but only on 2 thick strings. This trick can be utilized for simple bass lines, without slap/chords and other complex stuff.
Gonna try to be open here. The pronunciation of the pedal name depends on who made it and who pronounces it haha, so it might be exactly as you pronounced it :). BUT, as a native Spanish speaker, I would read it in Spanish because that word exists in Spanish. Aguilar is normally interpreted as "a place where eagles are/live", it comes from "águila" which means "eagle". So there's the surname "Aguilar" used in Spanish-speaking countries. In Spanish the conjunction of the letters "gue" and "gui" make the U silent and the G soft. As some people have mentioned, like in "guitar". The accent, just like in "guitar", is on the last syllable. So pronounce it like "guitar", just ad an "ah" sound at the beginning and change the "T" for an "L" and you're set. Just as a side note, in Mexico we do the same with Ibanez, the guitar brand. So it's a Japanese brand that gave a Spanish surname to the brand name. The surname is Ibañez, so we normally pronounce it like "ee-bah-ñes", Spaniards would probably say "ee-bah-ñeth". I hope you know what that Ñ sounds like :) So we don't pronounce it "eye-bah-nayz". BUT! As most of the world pronounce it in English, and maybe even the company founders/owners as well, you can pronounce it however you like :) I'm just saying that Spanish speakers will often recognize those words as Spanish and pronounce them that way. Cheers!
I've been messing about with this kind of idea using my Katana. It does the job at a push but not brilliantly. As you said Andy. It sounds slightly synth-like. Maybe useful for some things. I'm definitely getting a bass. The one you folks recommended as it happens.
I think it can absolutely replace a bass...sounds a bit dirtier as well, very nice...besides if it's not bass why are so many bass players here so threatened
Didn't sound bad at all and probably useful if you don't have a bass around. I'm curious if Julia uses pedals with her bass and if so which pedals does she use?
I have a bass guitar and enjoy playing bass, but I consider myself more of a guitar player. Having said that there is no bassist with the people I jam with so I would play bass and guitar but I never liked going from guitar to bass and back, so I purchased electro harmonics Bass 9 and also use a ABY pedal, A is going to the guitar amp and B is going to bass amp. This setup makes going from guitar to bass seamless. So is it as good as a bass NO is it good enough for a jam Hell Yeah
I play my classical acoustic guitar like a bass loads..... i really need to buy a uke bass the noodle on while watching TV. I think you can replace a bass with a guitar.... but you can't replace a bass player with a guitarist. It's about how you approach playing the instrument more than the instrument itself.
I would say Ag-will-ah for Aguila although it could be a silent L. I don't know. I can a barely grasp my own language :) Great video guys! It acttually sounds really good although no pedal could replace Julia's bass skills though! Lol Andy, as soon as the video started I thought exactly that! Oh dear, any excuse to get his new Fender out :) haha!
Aguilar is a surname in Spanish and it's pronounced 'A' (the a sounds like in "alpha") 'gui' (sounds exactly like in "McGee", yes the u in gui doesn't sound) 'lar' (Sounds like in Lars Ulrich, but the r must be stronger, like rrr) and the accentuation is in 'lar'. So, let's say it's pronounced A-gee-lárr
probably a midi guitar playing a sampled bass would be better although kind of ridiculous when you have a wall full of amazing looking basses behind you!
Even if you could get the pitch right, tight and consistent-- the tactile feel and response from a bass is different-- it's bigger, it's strings are bigger, you're just going to get a different feel by fumbling with the physical reality and the inherent physics of the bass (the pick ups, amplification, magnetic pull, string tension, etc.) So, it's an option on the same way that the Mel9 can give you an option but not really the same options as an actual Mellotron. Even if you could find a giant who could equalize the scale difference. It's like android bass, but a Nexus 6?
One of the most famous "bass" lines, Seven Nation Army is actually played on a guitar with an octave pedal, or so I'm told.... See 1.58 here.... ua-cam.com/video/NFwZCy8gvyw/v-deo.html
Pitch-shifters typically suck all the life and articulation out of the tone. Sure you can replicate the notes of a bass with a guitar and a de-tuner, but it will never sound like a bass.
No need for Trombones, put your trumpet through an octave pedal! No need for Tubas,Put your Trombone through an octave pedal! Buy a cello, put it thru an octave pedal and you have a bass fiddle!Sing like a tenor? You can have a fine baritone or bass voice with an octave pedal! It's craptastic!!
I play guitar and bass...Creative tool yes. Replaces the bass...NO! The feel of the bass has a lot to do with informing the player to play what is played, how it’s played and when something is played. I can’t see a proper groove occurring with the guitar through the pedal when certain genres, e.g., Reggae are considered.
And yet we have people here saying it will Never Sound like Bass...sounds like music elitist crap from bass players with inferiority complexes more like lol
Lol amateurs. Don't blend the raw signal with the effect signal. Then use the neck pickup and run it into a bass amp. Heavier strings might help too but the floppiness might not be a big deal clean but with the octaver you need a more stable pitch to not sound like WOWOWOWOWOW
This was great. It solves a big problem. There are 10 times as many guitar players as bass players. This solution may not replace a bass, but if you can't find someone to play bass, letting the guitarists share bass duties is feasible.
it worked for Sleater-Kinney and they just did downtuning instead of using octave pedals.
I was thinking this is wayy more useful in a recording scenario.
Me: Finally a pedal that sounds like a real bass and not a synthesizer.
Guy in the video: So that's without the pedal right?
Lmao
Depends what you mean by sounds like a synthesizer. Because at 3:11 it kind if just sounds like a square wave with a high end envelope filter.
The first demo (at 1:36), without the octave pedal, was the closest to a bass sound actually.
How did they get that sound?
@@TheEchelon Bass amp/cab, finger play, neck pick up.
depending on what type of bass, I feel like the one at 2:40 does it for me
@@chrismeza if you adjust put the bass controller at the max on a bass amplifier that's more or less how it sounds
As for using Analog Octavers with guitar, keep in mind that they won’t do polyphonic, they also have some tracking issues, on the other hand, within those limits they do sound better for single notes than their digital counterpart.
For bass the real deal sounds best.
This oddly shaped guitar you play looks quite authentic...
The U in "Aguilar" is silent, it's just there to indicate the G is hard (like in "guitar"). So it's "a-gi-lar".
A guitar
The G of guitar isn't hard at all. It's a soft G.
Incorrect
sorry but no. it's pronounced ag-you-lar.
@@timajax4800 Not in español, it's not. "AH-GEE-LAHR". Means "a place inhabited by eagles".
Some guitar processors do this trick perfectly, without any synth tones, sounding somewhat like classic jazz Fender, but only on 2 thick strings. This trick can be utilized for simple bass lines, without slap/chords and other complex stuff.
It sounded ok. A little bit thin but it works if the right amount of groove is there. Julia rocks!
Agreed, it sounds more like synth-bass...
Now I have that cool bass line stuck in my head.
So, the thing you really need to get a good bass line, is a great bass player :)
Pretty much!
Do you know any?

It’s ok if you’re used to a bass player that doesn’t really stand out or if you are just recording a backing track.
A dean is it? Looks authentic!
I’m a loop artist and I’m looking at all the different octave pedals for a solid bass sound for my loops.
EHX has an (expensive) bass 9 pedal that should be ultimate, but I haven't tried yet because of cost...
Besides using it as an effect, I use the octaver for bass lines when I create a loop to practice. Can't see a bass player use it for realsies.
Me: *puts an ocatve pedal on my 7-string*
Also me: *laughs in drop-tuned 5-string bass*
A man of culture I see
I tried it with an 8 string and my tiny amp is completely ill-equiped to handle the 20hz of drop e an octave down.
Wait, the initial playing was without the pedal? Then how did you get the guitar to sound like a bass?
Interesting sound. I tried it on a 7-string guitar. It's fun.
You still need a bass player for the demo, so please keep Julia ;-)
Julia is going nowhere!
//Andy
I think it can absolutely replace a bass...sounds a bit dirtier as well, very nice...besides if it's not bass why are so many bass players here so threatened
fun fact, this is how Tame Impala did the bass on The Less I Know the Better
Can I use an octave pedal on my acoustic guitar in standard tuning to make it sound one whole octave lower???
Finaz acoustic guitarist of italian Bandabardò uses successfully that way a Boss OC-3
supposedly Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) used that techniche to record the less i know the better
And here I am, tryna recreate that same effect lol
Didn't sound bad at all and probably useful if you don't have a bass around. I'm curious if Julia uses pedals with her bass and if so which pedals does she use?

I’m going to buy the baritone by Chapman. Neat pedal! Try it for me on a Baritone! I do not want to learn Bass. Thanks Andy.👁
Bass is next level. Julia has exposed me to a world that I didn’t know existed. Bass is.... good!

Can the opposite be done somebody please make a video on that
Add an light echo effect and yes.
Now with a baritone neck ... would this just be a Bass VI ?
At least Julia looks to be grooving.
Great for one man gigs using a loop pedal. You can lay down a basic bass rhythm on your loop.
Can you do the opposite? Make the bass sound like a guitar?
probably a midi guitar playing a sampled bass would be better although kind of ridiculous when you have a wall full of amazing looking basses behind you!
It helps to roll off the tone on your guitar
I need one now
I believe the correct term is „toy bass”
Dunno, but you can use bass + fuzz pedal to sounds like suzafon :D :D :D
I'd love Julia being my band's bass player... & yeah, I'm my band's bass player hahaha #iwillmissmyband
that actually made me snort. Sorry to hear that, David.

Like playing a Fender bass VI. Deep! ;)
it sounds funny but interesting, so maybe as an effect one could eventually use it - but not in general :-D - nice video, thx for doing and sharing
I can't believe there are people who've known about Christina Aguilera for years and years, and never noticed how her name is pronounced.
I’m beautiful. No matter what they say. Words can’t bring me down.

thats my Grandpas last name and its (ag-you-lar)
The pitch fork does a great job at this

For synth bass it’s ok but we all need a good bass player first !!!
We are very lucky to have Julia.

Thomann's Guitars & Basses I’ve searched the site and I cannot find a product ID for ordering a Julia? Is it in studio gear or what???
I can do you a great deal on a B-Stock Guillaume.

That’s a good point. This was fun though!
