Sounds more like a layered fuzz, to be honest. I prefer it when the bass guitar has its own unique parts and doesn't sound like a distorted guitar tuned an octave lower.
Yeah, it's a bit too artificial to really be a replacement for the bass player. It's more of a good way to supplement a bass player for riffs where they play the guitar line, which is what was done on this video, or to free them up to do something other than doubling the guitar or playing the root. I think that the real potential for this would be to use the output for the octave and process it to work as a monophonic bass synth by running it through an envelope filter or some synthesiser modules (the OC-5 generates the octave by similar means to the oscillators in a synth, as opposed to something like the POG which uses DSP to sample the input signal and output that same signal at a different pitch by detecting the frequency of the note and adding repeats of, or rearranging small samples from the waveform on the fly based on an algorithm. I might not be explaining it that well but basically for an octave down it samples the note at incredibly short intervals and then plays them twice in a row and for higher octaves it uses an algorithm to sort those samples so that you have twice as many oscillations in the same space of time. The OC-5 also samples the input with DSP, but instead of sorting those samples into different orders it finds the fundamental frequency of each note in a chord and then uses that to control an oscillator, allowing for the oscillator to generate multiple notes by encoding the waveform as a series of pulses based on the tracking of the fundamental notes. It's a more CPU-intensive process but you get the ability to alter the range of the effect, or only track the lowest note and it produces a cleaner, less harmonically complex sound that helps to prevent it from getting muddy and interfering with the main sound of the guitar, or taking up the harmonic space occupied by other members of the band)
I don't know if it's just your playing style, but it sounds like a downtuned guitar and not a bass. So a great pedal if you don't want to go through the hassle of changing tuning every five minutes (or if your fender strat can't quite handle A# tuning), and the up effect could have some cool uses for extreme contrast or something. Ultimately, a bass guitar has a sound that a normal guitar just can't replicate (The fender bass 6 highlights this kinda well), and i wonder what a bass through this pedal would behave like. Also, you don't want to upset bass players because they'll just turn around, clobbering you with their mile long guitar neck in the process.
Yeah none of these even sound like a bass Vi, guess it goes to show how longer scale length, fatter strings and specific pickups ... Make a difference lol Octave pedals are good to replicate synth sounds imo on both instruments
The first thing I saw when I clicked this video was a Marty Friedman ad... So... It's actually the first ad I ever pay attention in UA-cam. Now, about this video... It always thought that the Octaver would be used to get a Chuck Schuldiner's sound like in "The Philosopher"
I believe, that in modern metal, the bass guitar plays an especially huge role. I don't mean the lows, that's obvious, but the grindy mids and highs in the mid channel, which blend so well with the guitar tones usually placed more in the side channel.
While it might be a feasible substitute for a bass in certain songs/styles, it will always lose out in terms of versatility and style. The problem with this type of pedal is it just sounds like a lower guitar, not a bass. Periphery bass could be replaced, but Iron Maiden would be less likely.

It's refreshing to see another guitarist with a tiny pedalboard! I've only bought two overdrive pedals in the 12 years I've been playing - a Boss SD-1 and a Tubescreamer clone. High gain amp with a boost in front is all I need to get the chugs I like 🤷🏻♂️
I'm a bass player and I agree. I use an octave pedal with my looper when I play guitar and it's pretty sweet. I'm firing myself as a bassist. Jk, there's nothing like the feel and dexterity of a real bass...
Since most of what i do anyways is Extreme Metal anyways and the bass there is generally very distorted, i've actually learned to process pitch shifted guitars so that it kinda sounds like it should and it's really not that hard. Just EQ it and maybe add a multiband and that's it. I usually do that because i only have one bass and each my guitars is tuned differently and i don't want to be changing strings every time i record.
I bought my first-ever octave pedal earlier this year - they are riff monsters. I do like to add a wee bit of upper octave to my high-gain tone to make up for my amp's lack of a Presence knob.
As a bassist I use the Octaver all the time to create an amazing and unique sound... But the overtones are different and you'll never get a warm, deep bass sound with a guitar... Just like you'll never get the same deep sounds on a bass if you play the D- or G-string with an octaver like Chris Wolstenholme does for some Muse songs... It's just different
Replace a bass player? No. Be able to record a bassline with your guitar without owning a bass, play stupendously downtuned riffs, layer octaves, you name it, hell yes! This can make a killer tone on a sludge/stoner pedalboard imo
Ever since all those fancy MIDI bass plugins came along, I have been saying EVERY recording studio needs to have a Digitech Drop or an Electro-Harmonix Pitch Fork. That way, you can have the guitarist play the bassist's parts on guitar, and the bassist would never know the difference. I mean really, those fancy MIDI bass plugins are EXACTLY the same price as a Drop or a Pitch Fork. You might as well use a pedal, and have the actual musicians play an actual instrument, instead of pushing buttons on a computer.
Another grat track Pete. I MUST know what you areusing for drums. I am using EX Drummer and I can never seem to get the sounds that you get for you drums tracks.
well, i guess the unfortunate answer is no. in most genres where bass has a supporting role, it can most definitely be replaced, sometimes even with a (sub) sinewave, as most bass guitar characteristics (>1000 kHz) might even clutter the mix. HOWEVER. in genres where slappy wet bass is needed, nothing else will ever compare to the real thing. not even the mm scarbee plugin with a bit of OTT. though dua lipa songs are a bit of an exception. hmmm.. crap.
I split my bass signal into a tc electronic brainwaves with a compressor, high gain distortion and an EQ pedal and I can’t even remember the former guitarists name? 🤷🏻

The best guitar tones on most modern rock & metal productions are like 60% bass.
