  • If you have fruit trees, berry bushes, grape vines or herbs that already have flowered, or are already growing fruit, you need to protect them from a late spring freeze, or early frost in the fall.
We have an unexpected Polar Vortex headed our way, and I need to save my fruit from freezing now, or we won’t have any crops this year!
I have tried using the water spray technique to spray fruit so that the freezing water will keep the fruit for going below 32 degrees F. But that comes with its own problems, what with freezing hoses, etc. And now that my organic food forest has trees over 30ft tall, that makes it difficult to reach the entire orchard/vineyard/berry bushes and nut trees with spray.
So this time I am going to try something different, using standard BBQ propane tanks and various propane heaters.
Watch this video to see how we make out, and I will be able to critique what works best for the future.

I have tomatoes in flowers and small fruits already, strawberries, all kind of greens and I panicked when I heard this cold vortex will bring 30 F in my area, so I said, no way, Joseph! I used my welded fence around my greens and secured with wires on top my tarps, in the night there is not sun, by the morning when temperature goes over 49F I uncover all, my pot flowers used trash bags 42 gallons or tall kitchen depending size, I cut stalks and stick in the pot to keep the bag hight, small plants here and there i cover with empty pots, buckets, bins, plastics, shower curtains, etc. it took me almost 4 hours to cover all, then next morning uncover so they have sun, cover again, I started about 5:30 pm this time, and today, Wednesday 13 of May here will be 50F, I will not cover anymore, this has been crazy for me since this cold started, my fuyu (asian persimom has burned leaves by the cold, so my aloes in pots even that they were covered, tomatoes are okay, peppers are ok, cucumber some died, but most survived, they were covered, stevia is ok, I am so happy, but I am overly tired, my 45 chicks of 1 month and 2 months are in my bedroom with me, they stinks, but I have not electricity in the coop house, only solar motion lights, precisely because I do not want to deal with the need of heaters, normally I cover them in the night with a blanket and put them in a very thick cardboar box with a chicken wire top.
Even the dogs were cold, we took the winter tarp from the sides and top of the kennel two days before we knew the news, but I used those tarps for my plants!.
Now I need to be ready for drought, severe heat, but I am ready, I love my plants and animals, love push me to think out the box and find solutions instead crying on spilled milk! (I used stale bread to absorb the milk and give it to my chicken)
