Water freezing to ice creates what's referred to as "latent heat of fusion" a type of energy exchange that can in effect help to insulate the tree and it's blossoms from freeze damage. The "endothermic" reaction traps the warmth inside the plant helping to shield the it from potential frost and/or freeze damage from a cold snap. If the ice that is formed is left to become cloudy because there is not a consistent water source saturating the plant the reaction can become "exothermic" causing the plant to lose heat and damage to occur.
Here in WV we frequently get frost as the trees bud and bloom. Your trees are short enough to cover. If you cover and remove the covers( sheets, blankets, or tarp) before 9ish you should keep your blooms/fruit.
Marcheta Albert *Hello neighbor. Also in WV.*
sweetirisfarm hello to you;)
sweetirisfarm I meant smiley face. Hate little screens, lol.
*Haha*
Great video. I wish I'd seen it earlier but now I'm better prepared for next spring. Thanks for the info on the rainforest sprinkers.
Now in 2021, how did your trees make out in Spring of 2018? Did the technique work as you thought?
Thanks. Getting out there and doing what I can to prevent freeze
Central Florida here and we suddenly went up to the mid 80s even though I still have my winter crops in. I did plant beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, ect two weeks ago as a risk to try and beat the bugs and disease and it seems to be paying off as everything is growing well and the beans are already 6 inches high. I have to water my chinese cabbage many times a day to keep the soil cool and I hope they close up. We still have the 60s at night.
thank you for doing this video. we are indeed due of a freeze and my peach tree is in beautiful bloom. we sure will miss our peaches if something doesn't work. can't hurt to try.
beautiful blooms!
Thanks got a freeze warning tonight. Now I got job tonight
If the tree is young wouldn't this just mean the tree will use more energy to grow it's roots that year so in the long run it would be a good thing?
This video is a great help. My question is why do you put it on a timer? Why my just met the water spray for a few hours straight as opposed to having it turned on every twenty minutes?
Nice. Thx
New subscriber here. We have a farm channel here on UA-cam. We have a few 🍐 trees in full bloom right now. The temps are supposed to be down to 30 degrees tonight. Thanks for the tips, looking forward to checking out your other videos.
I'm near Modesto....its supposed to get 26 here! I covered all of my avocado and citrus with blankets and sheets. What about artichokes? Do you think they'll be fine?
CaliforniaGardeningMom i think so
Tesslynn Amburgey awesome thanks!
Oh no! We have the same weather problems: warms up, then bam!
We are forecasted for 28 degrees Fahrenheit the next couple of days and I just covered/protected my avocados! We are well past our last frost date and now this. Ah... Mother nature! We're in zone 9B too - Elk Grove, CA
Simply Blissful Living me too! Zone 9b oakdale, ca! Covered my avocados and citrus!
Isn't this weather just crazy! As much as I love the rain that is being forecasted, I can do without the freeze!
Simply Blissful Living me too!! A freeze this late is the worst!
I covered my small new avocado trees with large trash cans last night. They look good this morning.
Me too. 9b Temecula, CA. Almond tree is already blooming and one of my orange trees was damaged last night. Citrus is covered by frost blankets tonight.
Good video. I live in Indiana and use the sprinkler method on my garden for the first couple of frosts in the fall we have to extend the late season and it always works great. Happy gardening to you.
The only thing i can think would be an issue is the hose freezing when the timer kicks off
Hi, I live in zone 6B& planted several cherry trees last year,2 of them(Royal Ranier & Blushing Gold)have frozen buds and no flowers, I hope these 2 trees are not dead & recover?
Thank for sharing your information I live in Santa Maria California/ Orcutt and I was just out covering my fruit trees ....... which they don't have any flowers yet so u put my mind at ease 😊
I tried it and it didn't work.
Thnks. Hope it work if a freez ever comes through i will water my flowers.
I loved this video, thank you. I have three days of forecasted below 30 degree temps this week.
Do you have to leave the sprinklers on the whole time the temps are below freezing? Or just get them wet and turn off?
We get that too in zone 8a/8b 30 minutes south and east of Atlanta, depending on who you listen to. I lost my turkey fig In 2013, due to single digits. It was about 15' tall and was 9 years old. Now it still struggles to grow back from the root system. I think it was 3' tall last fall. Last year I saved my blueberries with Christmas lights from a hard freeze. I only have three bushes , but they are big and tall. It worked. They were in bloom at the time. Had lots of berries to harvest. Btw, I love your chickens!
The weather in Utah is heading your way, it is 15 degrees here and we have 2 feet of snow on the ground. I hope your tree blossoms survive.
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing! I hope it works and I look forward to your next video.
Good luck dan , let us know how it goes
the blooms are so beautiful. looking forward to your next video.
Alabama has temps coming in with rain first turning to snow. Temperature will drop to around 28. But, tomorrow night will be 19 and my plum tree is full of blooms! Will water protect it if I put my sprinkler in the middle of my tree for around 10 hours for Saturday thru Sunday morning?
Great video, thank you. Temps dropped to 24 degrees in Hanover VA on March 28th and 29th, 2022. See efforts to save the 2022 crop at Karin and Larry at Home. 2400 trees
I came on your video while studying this freezing blossom concept and I think you mean exothermic instead of endothermic(and vice versa) right? As this is to characterize the reaction: an exothermic(external) reaction gives off energy(heat) to the surrounding(in this case the blossoms). When ice is formed, hydrogen bonds are made and heat is released this is exothermic and protects your blossoms from cooling down too much(ice is clear). And when the ice melts it takes energy from the surrounding(your blossom unless it is warm outside) so heats goes into the melting reaction what makes it melt. Thanks for your video by the way. It makes me understand the concept much better. I hope I am right on this one as I have an exam about it tomorrow! Best wishes, Rémi
A marvelous video. I will try out your ideas in the frosty peak District on a fruit tree that is so old I cannot remember what it is, because it gets frosted every year!
Good to know, that's exciting what I am worried about. Thanks for the information
Here we go again! Supposed to be 23° Tuesday morning here in Wildomar, but two other weather apps say 31° and 29° I’m not worried even at 29° but 23° isn’t going to be good for my tropical snow and my desert gold. My other trees are still completely dormant! Good luck this year!
I found you whilst searching for solutions during cold weather. We in the UK are about to get blasted by baltic conditions just in time for the start of spring. You have beautiful blossoms. Most of ours are not out yet but I do need to protect my grape vine which is hardy only to a point. Great set up you have there.
Thanks for the info
Cover your trees that have the blooms
Will peach leaf buds survive temps like these? It’s going down to 15 next week at night for me
I’m in Oregon and out working on my winter garden too.
Google ‘Smudge Pot’. Old time method. Used to use oil. Perhaps there is now a more environmentally friendly way?
The strawberry growers do well with the sprinkler method. My well would be dry if I tried it. You must have city water.
Keeping my fingers X"d for you, you might end up with ice encased trees, something some people do around here for short lived yard art, never realizing how they are damaging their trees,
my almond trees are flowering the most over here in Sac Town......may lose a portion to this frost that will be visiting all week
But I was always taught that you never water the whole tree I heard that if you water the tree trunk then it would get tree rot
In Ventura CA my fruit trees have not bloomed at all. Cold here.
Thank for the info. Very much appreciated.
I have a question Dan I just received 2 jujubee trees bare root and our frost is supposed to be here Saturday and Sunday. How should I keep them ? I was thinking in the garbage? Some people say dig a ditch? I have great success with your advice from your videos and you are one of the ones that greatly motivate me to plant my food forest. I really love your videos. Wish you had an email or Instagram page to be able to communicate more if needed. Anyway thank you for your videos and I hope all your fruit survive in abundance. God bless.
Meant garage
9B Redlands, CA got to 27° last night
Are your fruit trees on semi-dwarf rootstock?
Good advice. You are like a scientists
Tank you for the info
Thank you for sharing. I heard about it too. And rush to bring my avocado into the garage.
whats up with your ears
