I bought the smaller box of speed paint. If you want amazing looking glass for your cockpits, paint them a nice silver and then apply the speed paint over it. I’ve also noticed the paint pulling away in spots but it’s not a deal breaker and the price is so much better than GW’s contrast line.
Great tip!
Can confirm I've actually been using contrast paints for this exact method and they come out gorgeous, I bet it'll look just as great with these! Def picking some up
A lot of them looked much better after they dried, especially the lighter/thinner ones.
Yes! I found the same.
For where the paint goes a little rouge, it's easy to clean up with a wet qtip before it dries completely, there will be some staining but it makes touching that area up alot easier.
Good pointer!
I recently got a few pots of these, and I'm excited to use the Absolution Green in particular! Glad to see a preview of how they look. Much as I love painting minis, it'll be nice to have a few shortcuts like these to get my backlog ready for the tabletop.
Agreed! More time playing!
Thanks for sharing about these new paints. Heard a lot about them but this is my first insight as to mech painting. Interested in seeing these used into a force, taking them from fast basing to full table ready regalia.
Indeed! I am hopeful!
The Matte White warpaint can also be used to touch up the mistakes, as the primers are made to be the same color as the paints they're named after.
I'm a big-Fan of Solaris 7from way-back.These would be awesome for some-Flashy--Flashy Mechs! Gettingit painted, and decaled' Fast for the Next-Match! Good Video! Great review of a great-product I have watched on youtube!.
I've been using them for a Taurian Concordat army and they're great. Zenithal prime, slap em on, dry brush, metallics, varnish and done. I think they look better than Contrast too. Don't use water though they'll reactivate and come off!
Oooo you did the speedpaint on top of a zenithal - I bet that looks great!
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming they look great. I don't know how well you can see but I have my speed paint catapult as my display pic right now. The big trick is to really exaggerate the contrast with the zenithal but leaving a lot more of the black on the underside. Some people go a little heavy with the white and you lose a lot of the shadows.
Thanks for reviewing these! I've experimented with GW contrast paints, it's nice to see someone's take on the Army Painter ones. Also my new drinking game is take a shot every time Aaron says "whaaaaash" in that Philly accent.
We enjoy the same game then, that guy cracks me up.
Do you say WARSH. Ya weirdos. Im gonna drink some wudder and grab a hoagie from WaWa.
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming Oh hell no, WARSH is even worse!
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming I remember WaWa.
Correction: I miss WaWa. :P
The best!
Don't water these down, that's what "reactivates" the paints and keeps pulling the pigment from the high spots. If you want to thin your speed paints down a little, use the included Speedpaint Medium.
Interesting. So really as dry a brush as possible then? Good tip.
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming I just lick the tip and everything comes out fine.
Sensible and practical. Nominated for comment of the month. 😄
Try out the Vallejo mecha color line next.
I've had awesome luck with Mecha colors. Durable too.
I’ve just started using these on mechs and I’m loving it so far. I need to find the right primer, brushed preferred. I’ve not really enjoyed painting and have not ever wanted to paint mechs (I usually paint WWII). This stuff has changed my attitude.
This was a very exhaustive review! I had been looking at these speed paints just the other day. The Camo Cloak is a really winner in my book. Would be great for a Davion lance.
Ooo yah agree! That is one I am using for sure.
Bought a set of these based on your recommendation. I've found some of the problematic ones seem to work fine on a lightly base-coated citadel miniatures white basecoat. The ones that worked well in the review seem to work really well in all conditions though. I'm doing some CCAF guys with the orc green and grey legs. I'll post some pics to discord.
Excellent!! I do wonder if it is primer related… Army Painter has their own primer of course haha
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming yeah, different primers have different properties. Normally it’s pretty subtle, but for things like this, how hydrophobic the base is will effect how well the “layering” effects and pulling away. GW white is fairly “powdery”, so will be less hydrophobic.
This makes sense!
Great video, was thinking about the orange for a Rolling Thunder lance but was not sure about the color.
Cool! Glad you found it helpful and thanks for watching!
Watching again for paint inspiration and i think prismatic bolt would make amazing ppc barrel holes 🤔 might have to test that out
I think so! I was thinking about using them for JJ ports - but be careful it doesn’t “run”! I have had that issue!
Thanks for sharing im new to painting and am looking for new colors. And paint a space Vegas lance lol
Deffo had some reactivation with painting on some Vallejo matt varnish -- and this was a good couple of weeks after painting. Will need to switch varnish when using these
Nice job guys. As mentioned by others the reactivation issue needs to be looked into. Really cool but if you want to add accents and trim may be a problem. Or you have to avoid putting it ans nit just splash around. Look forward to your response and future videos.
Yah I am interested to see if (after a good drying period) if the paints reactivate easily…
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming in my experience after a good drying period (45 minutes) I did not experience reactivation.
Excellent!
Try (on white primer) zealot yellow let it totally dry the fire giant orange for the flame type highlights and thanks to you tried orc skin cockpit for a Adder Upsilon Galaxy :)
Great review guys. Interesting colours as an alternative to contrast paints.
Anything to paint mechs faster is a good thing.
I agree! I am going to try Goliath Scorpion using these next.
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming I've got a mate doing Goliath Scorpions that will agree with you! 😄
Holy white I think if you lightly brush or dry brush white on it it could work for comstar.
Should experiment with some different primers like black an gray.
I tried a very light gray, and the colors I tested were noticeably darker.
Video was awesome guys - I had the paints and have been using them (contrasting viewpoint - I liked the outcome of Gravelord Grey...), but it was awesome to see an application of all the paints. I too had problems with the paint pulling away, particularly with the Cloudburst Blue and Highlord Blue - these were both bad that way. I would love to see some more tests on different primer colors!
Ahhh tell me more!!! I want the greylord to look good in the worst way; it’d make my life painting Hells Horses so much easier.
What process did you use? And thanks 😄
Good reviews
This is a really cool review, I think I might pick these up, I just started a new job so I don't have a lot of time to paint. It looks like this'll be good for single color & panel color units like sword of light.
How does the speed paint work if you layer it? For example, the clan wolf tiger stripe paint scheme, would using speed paint orange & black work well? Where you layer the black over the orange?
So admittedly have not tried that yet - it must work. Others have advised using almost no water even on the brush to minimize “reactivation” of the speedpaint.
The bottles I had didn’t run like yours did. I was able to paint some details
I interesting - I am still getting tons of run and shook substantially.
I've been enjoying using, most, of them. The Crusader Skin has worked well for 10mm minis
It was cool seeing the range used for Mechs though, tempted to get the new Starter set to try them
Great review! You could use the multi painted mechs as pirates or clan renegades units. Looking forward to more videos.
Haha oh yah! Ryans Rebels does that I think?
I hated the few I bought. Try the orc skin as a base. Then try to paint Capellan Warrior House trim over the green. Anything other than black trim will reactivate the green and taint your color. ESPECIALLY ivory trim (House Ma-Tsu Kai) will bleed green into it.
NO, varnish over the green before didn't help. NO, waiting a week didn't help either.
Interesting - I havent yet tried the other colors yet. I wonder if reactivation will be a huge issue
Warlock, so you let it dry a week and still reactivated? This was painting and not highlights or some minor touches and flourishes?
That disgraceful act of creating the diamond shark to kill the sea fox was by a member of my Clan Snow Raven, for which we all remember with disdain and shame. Seyla!
Haha I didn’t know that!! Great lore tidbit!
Cool review guys!
Thanks for watching!
Bo DOES know. War Eagle baby!
Haha yesssss 😜
Plasmatic bolt may make for good windows
Yes! Good idea! I think PPC glow etc might work here too.
Do you think the Orc Skin would be great for a Jade falcon mech? It just screams Jade falcon to me
Definitely. I used the Absolution Green but could definitely see the Orc Skin working as well.
After this video I will now place mullets on My spiders
Hahahahah
I''ve been looking for a proper Tyrian Purple. I wonder how the Purple Alchemy on a darker primer would look.
I did the Hive Dweller on a light gray and it was like black. I imagine the alchemy will be darker - worth a try.
I liked the look on some of mine with different primers just to give them some different shades.
The Cloudburst Blue might be good for the Midnight Blue Wolf Dragoons' Gamma Regiment.
Oh yah good idea! I think Ive learned to be careful of pooling with that one, otherwise it looks pretty good!
You may say at some point…what primer did you use
I used Rusteloum flat white 2x primer… my standard brand for priming my minis! I usually prime gray, but for this obvs I did white 👍
Yellow in *one* coat? Cripes. That's worth its weight right there, even if there are reactivation problems.
Haha hell yes. Also I am reading (comments) saying after a 45-60 min dry period, there is no reactivation… so we shall see
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming If they don't reactivate, I'd love to see a part two using them for canopy work.
They seem to have the same problems that Citadel contrast paints do... Too much variation in coverage and quality between colors, and it tends to look "splotchy" (with maybe the added benefit of a longer drying time than Citadels offerings). I think these sorts of paints can be great for beginners or those more interested in the gaming portion of the hobby who just want to get some units that pop and have identifiable factions on the table. However, I still believe you just can't top the results that using more traditional paints and methods can yield. I still like to use contrast paints instead of washes in some camouflage schemes though, and I'm sure there are many other interesting uses for these paints! Would be interested to see some of your suggested experiments.
My heart of hearts agreed!
I love what some people can get out of regular paints..but I’m not going to work that hard to get those results. I’m the target market for this stuff
Looking to do both Hells Horses Fire Horse Galaxy (midnight blue/yellow-orange highlights) and Zeta Galaxy (Black/Navy Blue highlights). Which speed colors do you think would work best?
Thinking of speed paints as Im not great/good/average (alright I'm a compete noob) at painting.
For Black, I wouldnt use speed paint… just black or charcoal acrylic. For the navy, whatever color I did the Longbow in (can’t remember the name at the moment) was pretty solid!
I'm more of a mindset to buy any kinda paint besides Citadel products if I can avoid it.
Haha you mean you dont want to spend more on paint than your car?
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming well, by that standard any paint I buy costs more than my truck. "Bought" it from a coworker for a dollar since to transfer the title here there has to be an amount spent.
Haha love it
Oof yeah adding water the paints isn't recommended. If you need to add a thinner you gotta use their medium!
We only had water on the brushes - I think *how much* water the brush is holding might make a difference… but I was def not using a ton there. I wonder though if the brush needs to be extremely dry 🔥
