Another technique I use, is to use a colored wash/glaze over the white primer prior to using speed paint. This will tint the highlight/raised areas in whatever direction you want. The wash is usually a lighter version of the speed paint you are using. The contrasts between the shaded and highlighted areas can be more subtle or more intense, depending on your desired end result.
"A wuddered down wahsh" this video is so Philly. Seriously though, this was a nice re-examination of the original review. I still haven't got these speed paints yet but I might try them for their value.

Good stuff. The Army Painter Speed Paints have been good to me.
I think Dan meant stippling, basically lightly dabbing a little bit, it can add texture.
I share your shame, I many, and I mean many Galaxies of Clan Mechs & dozens upon dozens of Regiments of Inner Sphere Mechs, from Ral Partha to every Modern Box. I keep watching painting videos and have even picked up equipment to do it all. Yet, I have never painted a single Mech. ever and been around since Battledroids. Just glad my buddies that are excellent artists have bartered with me for supplying them with every paint kit and brush type and have made my table top used mechs standout.
Sorry to hear Kevin moved, condolences... Always great videos, thank you.
Thanks for watching! Who knows maybe some day he will come back 🙂
You totally got me Dan, I heard Kevin and I had to look again!
Thanks again for doing these videos on this product! It's been far too long since I have put paint to brush, and with my new job it's been really tough to find time and energy for it. I think these will be a nice way to get in really good tabletop quality to my backlog of minis. Great job guys!
Edit: Yep, I too have a pile of shame! Lol
The shaaaame hahah
Speedpaints are definitely great for us busy folk!!
Hot tip for reactivation… GW contrast medium. Use a couple drops on the pallet between 1:2 or 1:1 medium to speed paint. Once dry you can paint over it or dry brush with out worrying about taking the base layer off. Thanks for the entertaining vids!
Great review! I enjoyed the speed paint discussion. I am looking forward to the day,Aaron,Thom, and Dan do a video on decals.Looking forward to more videos.
I'll be sticking with the standard acrylic paints. I like my multiple coats of watered down paints, and I don't have to buy into an entire vendor locked ecosystem.
I cannot argue with you on these points!!
Theres a difference between dried and cured. Dried is after the water in the speed paint evaporates, cured is after the inks in the speed paint turn solid. Cured takes hours, dried takes minutes. Thats why the white mech 'evened out'
Great tip!
Great videos as always 👌
Vortex Shaker is worth the cash! Especially for the speed paints and contrasts paints
I only just started using some of these, and I must say they are shockingly thin. Honestly i think they work better as a wash, or a mix to loosen up more thick paints, and contrast.
I think anything like the Speedpaints, Contrast etc. are great for quick basecoats for a tabletop standard paint job. For excess pooling, especially on large flat surfaces, one thing I’ve done is use a cheap makeup brush to drybrush a similar or lighter color over the area. It creates a nice area highlight and blends the excess pools away while being very quick.
Love the tip!!
I just made a HUGE investment into tabletop battletech and I would like to start painting my mechs when they arrive. Any tips, pointers, and/or things I shouldn't do when painting? I've never painted miniatures before.
Best advice would be to watch some painting tutorials over at camo specs online!
To prepare prepare my paints I use a LIARTY Nail Lacquer Shaker from amazon and have used it for about 8yyrs
Tell me more - do you use this over the primer? Or as a primer?
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming it's just a shaker for mypaints
But as for speed paints you get a nice metalic colour is you use metal paints under your speedpaints
Very good tip! Thank you!
I use a zenith highlight before using seedpaints the a drrybrush
The name of the technique you were looking for was stippling
Nailed it.
I do have my pile of shame. Piles. Piles of shame.
We can form a help group!
After I use speed paint, I seal it with a flat clear varnish. Now I am able to paint details or even apply more speed paint without the worry of re-activation.
What varnish, because it's not Army Painters own matte air varnish. The varnish itself will make the paint bleed into the brush.
@@warlok363 I use Krylon or Rustolium.
My Vallejo brush on varnish does reactive the paint. It is supremely annoying, as I'm varnishing to be able to paint over the top/highlight/etc
Edit: that's after the speed paint has dried for 24hrs at least.
Varnish does not seem to work well with speed paints.
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming I use Krylon flat clear all the time and have never had an issue.
