I love both of these ships. The MSR has higher SCM and top speeds, but the 400i is faster in atmo. The way CIG has balanced these 2 comparably fast ships to feel different in terms of their handling/responsiveness/smoothness is quite interesting to experience.

the MSR can be run down by most ships in atmo. Constellations eat them when they try to run cargo on planets. I was very disappointed in the MSR for this reason alone. You are better off in a C2 in atmo at this moment in time, since they basically move the same speed. (in atmo) I guess its called the "star"runner cause it can only run in space right now.

@@urbabyboss FALSE, every time a mantis tried to get close it died. You literally sneeze on one and it blows up. Just because it's faster on paper doesn't mean it can do the job against a ship with 115k shields when it has 3450 shields. Also when I did the test on the Mantis it only was 324 m/s in atmo to 400i being 332 m/s in atmo. So don't spread lies about which is faster. Also the most on the 400i is 9 m/s faster than the Mantis. It can't catch a 400i in atmo let alone blow it up or keep in "range" of the QED.

The 400i is my long-distance travel / exploration vessel. It has enough space to carry my weapons, armour, and a small vehicle. That's enough for running bunkers, or moving between my homebase and workplace, while sitting in comfort. When engaged, those twin Size 4 hardpoints can be quite handy (I run twin AD4Bs, which are a surprise to most pirates). The 400i is not a combat ship though and I can easily get away from them.
I really do wish they could make the vehicle bay a bit larger ... of all the larger ships, perhaps the 400i is the ONLY one which can't even carry a Fury!

The best part of the 400i is the airlock and bike bay. You can exit the ship without leaving it vulnerable, and access the inventory from the bike bay, or store boxes and unwilling passengers in there. Definitely helps make up for the lack of cargo space in the main bay.

I own both ships and the difference between them boils down to the fact that I fly the MSR almost daily and cannot see myself ever getting rid of it while the 400i gets taken out every now and again just for a change and I am constantly thinking about melting it.
The main difference is probably the fact that I trade quite frequently and having 114scu instead of 42scu is a huge difference.
On top of that, I like to take vehicles and sometimes that includes a ROC. I can get two ROCs or STVs in the back of the MSR and I can even carry a MULE alongside a full 114scu cargo load with relative ease. The 400i can carry one STV but cannot fit a ROC at all. The fact the 400i has a hangar for a X1 is cute but I could fit two or three X1s in the MSR while still hauling a full load.
The last point is something you missed but can be very important ie the MSR allows you to concentrate all 6 guns on a forward target while the 400i cannot aim its top turret forward so only has 4 to use in attack.
Oh and a bonus demerit to the 400i for that irritating ramp that can only be opened from outside by running somewhere else first. Grrr!
I think the only reason I still have the 400i is that I am hoping that when we get proper 'Exploration' as a loop, the specialised radar suite and holoviewer on the 400i *might* bring an advantage but if that turns out to not be the case then the 400i will probably go. Yes it has better shields but in 7 years playing SC I have never had my MSR destroyed by something the 400i would have survived. It just does not do enough to justify that tiny cargo capacity apart from 'look pretty' and the MSR is a nice looking ship as well.
ps Next time you have both ships in your hands, time how long it takes you to run from the elevator to starting the engines. The MSR wins by about 4 seconds despite the number of doors! This is because the elevator and ramp both take too long to deploy.

The SCU difference is definitely hard to ignore, especially with the versatility of your hauls; although I just love the protection from that size 3 large shield. I've pledged for both and consider the 400i akin to a real life Cigar boat/drug runner with it's rear facing unmanned turrets, while being able to chart a system to avoid potential security checkpoints. The MSR is a multi tasker, that can also be a smuggling ship, but will be harder to solo than the 400i IMO. I am hoping that the MSR will get long or at least med. range scanning, instead of the short that is planned to intercept data and some hacking abilities when completed. If either of these ships are not for you check out the Connie Taurus that does many of the same things (shielded smugglers hold in rear), but in a more utilitarian package in which I also have pledged for. I love these all purpose small crew ships that can be soloed W/out much trouble. BTW one of these might be CCU into a Corsair in time depending ...

With regret, I have to disagree. Having started with an Andromeda, I left its archaic and bug-ridden design for the 400i hoping for something better for my pledge money. My disappointment was tremendous. With a cargo capacity 4 less than a Cutlass Black, no ability to carry a ROC mining vehicle, and no way to fit anything useful into that bespoke compartment up front (tried the nox, the dragonfly, the hoverquad - and all failed), I discovered the 400i is pretty ... useless. It has better shields - yes. It has a slightly less annoying interior layout (but not that much less annoying in terms of obstacles to the bridge of the ship). It has a lot of functionality that maybe, one day, will come into the game. That's true for both ships, but the MSR has guaranteed utility that the 400i simply cannot match in the here and now.
With the MSR, I can carry 4 or 5 Prospector loads of refined goods in one go. I can carry a useful and profitable amount of gold. I can carry an URSA or a Lynx. I can carry and deploy a Fury! I've used that long ramp to rescue someone halfway down a mountain. After a bunker run, it's incredibly easy to toss up to 20 ... armor donors ... in the back after a bunker for a fast and agile get-away. It excels running bunkers or light bounties, when its turrets are manned.
Neither of these ships can lay claim to being the "battle yacht" that the 600i is. They are meant to run fast and not fight it out with an opponent. It's not in question that they can both run. Can they do so whilst doing many useful things? One of them can. Only one of them can. That's why the MSR is my pledge ship, and I melted the 400i to get me there.

I honestly think the Andromeda may take the win for most useful ship in this category (after the gold polish pass), but we'll have to see! And I see your points about the MSR, there's not denying its versatility; I just find the smaller shields a bit too weak for my liking. But it sounds like it's carved a good spot in your fleet, and finding what works for you is the best thing about this game!

Most of what you said sounds like you didn't fully research or test both ships out to their full extent. The MSR is the slowest ship of the 2 in atmo. 264 m/s the 400i was 398 m/s on the test me and friends did. If you are in a MSR doing atmo runs for cargo, you are a sitting duck for most every ship in the game. Sure you can outrun a 600i or freelancer and any other slow atmo ship.. but everything else is as fast or faster. Hell the C2 was clocked at 262 m/s. So if you run into pirates with all that gold they will just take it from you in the MSR. The 400i is the only ship of the 2 that gets away. The MSR can't stand up in a fight to save it's cargo at all in any situation, the 400i can defend itself incredibly well with 2 gunners rear of the ship while it outruns most everything. Only ships that really pose a threat to a 400i are the ARES which clocked in at 410 m/s in atmo. So if you have distance on them you are fine and you get away.. if not well you gotta hope their small shield doesn't hold up to your turrets. Everything else that is faster doesn't pose a threat when flying to space to jump away. Battle tested both ships to pirates so many times and the MSR is the worst of the 2.

    • @DanteSerrano007
      @DanteSerrano007 11 місяців тому

@@tj7094It's not really a failure to research the speed aspects of both ships; it's a difference in focus. I play solo almost always. So, turret capabilities are completely out as far as having any importance to me. I shift to my C2 for large scale cargo moving like Beryl, but the 400i is not really trading at a useful scale for that domain of cargo, either (neither is the MSR). And, I won't trade in gold, period, because the inventory is almost always too low and - as stated - it's a pirate magnet. So, I will never have "all that gold" to be concerned about. To me, it's just not a smart commodity to trade in, flying solo. Perhaps the better way to restate the point, as opposed to throwing shade on someone's research, would be to point out that...
"The 400i is an excellent gold runner, if you get into that sort of thing."
Point noted, but doesn't invalidate any of the utility of the MSR which the 400i remains incapable of matching. Also, I'm actively testing the 400i in the PTU. You'll be happy to hear that the visual glitches have been cleared up (floating panels and blackened doors), but no vehicle can safely fit in its forward garage, still. Smaller vehicles are kind of broken in the PTU, and so it's hard to trust testing at this point - maybe it will improve as they iterate on the patch. I very much hope you continue to enjoy the 400i. Best to you.

MSR isn't the safer ship to haul cargo in atmo. Constellations run them down and they are slow af. 400i is KING for getting in and out in atmo. So from what I've seen it has a much greater potential for hauling cargo in risky situations. MSR is about as slow as a C2 in atmo. You can't make it out of atmo fast enough to really shine. In space it's a different beast but right now everything that is good to sell is usually planet side and for trade.

I dont usually comment opinions on UA-cam, because...well its youtube. But I really enjoyed the video, and I want to drive up the metrics so here it is.
I think that for combat, a point I would have liked to see raised which might shift the points around is arc coverage over raw firepower.
I have not flown around with a 400i as much, but the MSR always felt like a very underrated ship, as the turrets effectively can cover all arcs around the ship, and have plenty of overlap, meaning you can better use all that firepower to either focus down a target, or dissuade hostiles from keeping pursuit.

The utility of these head to head makes the MSR the clear winner. The MSR has way more cargo capacity so you'd make money faster. You could say that the long range capability is great for the 400i so that the exploration gameplay loop makes up for it's lack of cargo, but you forgot to mention that the MSR can go twice as far as the 400i in quantum long range and to top it all off, the MSR has data running with long range scanning to boot. The 400i is pretty, I'll give you that, but as far as multi-role, multi-crew gameplay and money earning capacity is involved, the MSR absolutely crushes the 400i.

The only thing that keeps it from being that full daily driver is the small cargo bay and the forward facing guns sometimes makes you think you can take on a fight when you should be running.
If we were ever to get a no hideaway smuggling tunnels version of the MSR I'd marry it. Yes, it really needs another entrance, but nothing else quite flies like it. I'm just super worried that when control surfaces and armor come in how that'll affect the flight model for both ships.

I have both as well. Gun to my head, I'd choose the MSR. But I will say that the 400i is great for bunkers and ground excursions. You can hop in the vehicle in the cargo bay, hit the button from the vehicle, close the elevator from the vehicle and do the same on your return. And there's less doors to go through. Much more convenient. But overall the MSR has better turret placement, way more cargo hauling, data running, smuggling and can fit larger vehicles.
The MSR desperately needs a S3 shield, a second entrance and maybe even 2 additional panthers for the pilot to control. Its such a large ship, seems a bit illogical that the manufacturer wouldn't have provided adequate protection for hauling sensitive data/cargo when the space and power is obviously there.

If the X1 bay could be shielded like the smuggling compartment of the MSR, I think it would come in handy. For the MSR, when modularity (coming soon ™ ) is possible I feel I will not use the data stacks and use for more cargo space. Or replace one of the 400i's climate controlled spaces with a data stack.

I agree and since the components are so redundant in the 400i, you can put in stealth components, while still having standard ones. Hopefully we will be able to shut down some components, while using others of the same type. Ex. while always running a stealth shield, but shutting down the standard power plant, coolers and powering up stealth power plant, coolers, with a few flicks of a switch or 2, you could possibly reduce the signature to that of a Super hornet.

Part of me wonders if the 400i will get variants like the 300i did. The 425a could move the dorsal turret forward to the center of that circle to give it a better range of coverage and give the pilot size 5 weapons.

I finally bought a 400i in game. It's a heckuva a nice bump to QoL on bunker missions. I've got a cyclone in the back for those unique approaches. I don't really want anything else in game. All the aUEC I've earned has gotten me everything I wanted. I didn't really want the 400i, I just wanted to spend some money, lol. Glad I did though! I use it instead of my Cutty black now. I just realized I made all the money I want to this patch and I only took the MSR out for Xeno. She's perfect for clearing the cargo side.

MSR deserves a better Shield or more HPs, too bulky to be that fragile. it has like 6 times the mass of the 400i with half the hitpoints and 1/5 the shields.
I had the 400i preorder, melted, cant even put a ROC in it without breaking some parts of it and its tricky still.

MSR without a better shield is a sitting duck in cargo hauling in atmo. It's almost as slow as the C2, its like 1 unit of speed different. Constellations can chase you into the dirt. It's not for hauling anything anywhere safe in atmo. 400i on the other hand can.. it outruns most everything in atmo. There's a handful of ships that can keep up or beat it, but I have yet to see one stop me from leaving atmo and jumping. The MSR tho has always been a death trap in my tests.

If you do any cargo hauling like gold, the MSR is a death trap. It's as slow as a C2 in atmo and doesn't have shields with withstand much. 400i on the other hand is fast in atmo and can outrun all but the fastest ships in atmo. You can make it out of a landing zone and to space to jump safe.. in the MSR a Constellation can run you into the dirt in atmo. Again this is mostly cargo hauling. It's def not the ship it is made out to be for courier missions. At least right now.

    • @chrisajokinen
      @chrisajokinen 11 місяців тому

@@tj7094Funny you should say that. I have bought gold at SMO-18 (I think) and got 114 scu, almost full. When I took off, I did not see anyone but decided to fly like a bat out of hell, over the trees and hug the ground. I barely got out of the armistice zone when I was tagged with a missile lock. I started firing chaff, but the missiles still hit, rattlers by the way. I realized I needed to get into space and qt. More missiles in bound. Hits. The strength of the MSR is speed and MT's atmosphere was slowing me down. I moved my shields to the rear and gave them more power, I then pitched the ship up to about 70 degrees and hit the afterburners. My attacker was hot on my tail and his guns were chewing through my shields quickly. But altitude gave me speed and distance. I start to spool my quantum drive and realized I still had SMO-18 as my destination. More missiles, shit. Taking my finger of off the boost I hit the chaff again and pulled up the star map to clear it. Done. I glance at my shield display. A thin red line is trying to grow. The gun fire had stopped but more missiles are incoming. Just need a jump target. Found one, calculating, more missiles inbound, and I jump right before they hit. I realizes I was holding my breath and exhale. I stop my jump and change directions, just in case he is following. I set a course to ArcCorp to sell at Area 18. Looking in chat I see my attacker sent a message, "Damn that ship is fast". I sent him a message back about how close he was. My right-side engine was outlined in red. In the exterior view I see they looked damaged with sparks streaming out of both. I did not have long left. I got the ship into quantum travel and continued to converse with my attacker. I think we both had fun and got the most out of Star Citizen that day. It is moments like this that truly define why SC is special abd why I love the MSR.

Here's some numbers for people who are only looking at top speed. MSR is the slower of the two ships if you fly in atmo. MSR is 264 m/s and the 400i was 398 m/s on my tests. I forget which planet I was on but that shows the huge difference between the 2. The C2 was 262 m/s.. so don't believe top speed means everything, atmospheric speeds matter when you run cargo. You'll be shocked with a Constellation Andromeda runs you into the dirt with your MSR cause it's faster than you in atmo while the 400i pilot is safely getting away to jump. Face value is nothing without tests.. I fell for the MSR death trap too. 400i is the safest decent cargo hauler in the game in the current state of everything. Yes some ships can still pose a threat. Arrow isn't much due to high shields, scorp with gunner would be a prob if you are solo and both ARES.. but ARES is only moving at 410 m/s so if you already have distance you might get away. Best thing you can do is know what ships are around and if yours can outrun them. If you have 2 gunners nothing is going to stop you as everything that can keep up doesn't have much shields. So far my success rate with the 400i is 100% the MSR is 0%. This is when there are pirates involved.

The main advantage the MSR has over the FL Max is that the cargo bay allows you to deploy either one of two vehicles while the Max might need you to drive one out before you can drive the second one out. A wide bay is also so much better than a long narrow bay when loading crates with a tractor beam and we will all have to do that soon. The MAX also has terrible sluggish handling. The one advantage it has is a side door. Cargo-wise the 400i isn't even in the race.

The 400i is the better ship in most ways. It’s not as good looking (a real love or hate exterior whereas most love the look of the MSR), but the interior is night or day. The 400i interior is incredibly well designed given that unusual shape. Two entrances and exits, windows, it’s a pleasure to spend time on. The MSR is the opposite and needs a full interior rework. For me, I had to choose the MSR. I run with a few people on board, and the MSR's turrets are positioned so that the two turrets can agress or defend equally. The 400i's turrets are located on the back, with very poor forward visibilty, and the way fighting in SC works, "rear pointed' weapons are effectively useless. So it's a nice single person ship, that has turrets in case you have someone with you, the MSR is just a better multi-crew ship. IMHO.

you can move cargo into other places around the ship giving you alot more cargo hauling abillity just not very vehicle friendly sadly
and its much easier to get into the cockpit in a hurry and is only 37 SCM slower
so if pirates attack id go for the 400i over the MSR any day its much harder to shoot at too paird to the MSR

Neither ship is good at combat, and IMO the edge the 400i gets just fools you into fighting when you should be running. The MSR' top speed, and especially the acceleration difference, makes the 2 S2 shields more than adequate. Putting a S3 on it would make it OPAF as it's extremely hard to catch already. It's large hangar is great for cargo, vehicles, and quickly loading in "captured goods", opening up more playstyles thus making it great solo or with friends. To each their own though. Your first video I really am at odds with, but hey. 07
Edit: Also, if you keep the elevator down and just hop up in the MSR, it's actually not as bad as one thinks to get to the cockpit, having to stop at the doors makes it feel longer than it is. Outer ramp also opens/closes very fast.

MSR's top speed is only in space, in atmo it's much slower than the 400i. 264 m/s to 398 m/s for the 400i wins.

Man, 400i is more maneuverable and loses the maneuverability battle? Come on…

    Not the same gameplay

That's very true, they are quite different in how they approach their roles, but they're both similar sizes and prices!

400i, loads of room inside totally wasted, what are the chill rooms for lol. The cargo grid of a starter ship and can only carry a hoverbike. All that for the same price as a connie, corsair and yes the msr. Plus to me the front of the 400i is god awful. It's like it's hit a wall face first, ugly.

It's definitely not for everyone! I personally like the design of the 400i, but I agree, it loses a lot of utility for aesthetics and other rules of cool!

400i. That ugly duck of a ship called the MSR is a prime example of bad design inside and out.

The 400i is nearly perfect for what it's designed, it's really hard to go wrong!

Why anyone would spend real money on this scam is beyond me

Because some day it could be the ultimate space game… although feels like a distant dream after the last 18mths I agree.

I mean... people throw hundreds of dollars at a single baseball game to just sit in a chair and be uncomfortable too. Worse, they have to be in public.
Zero "real value" but hey they have a fun time for 3 hours and then ho home with a memory.
Same goes for food st stupidly priced restaurants. Sure it feeds you for a day, but not much better than any food you could prep yourself and other than taco bell, ends up the same way the next day.
If people like throwing money at an empty game with pretty pixel ships and it makes them have a little fun, let them throw money

It costs £45 to play and everything else is optional and not even 'pay to win' as you can buy anything in-game. I have spent more money on just two or three months fees to be allowed to play a game online.

I don't think this game is a scam at all, and I've really enjoyed the time I've spent playing it!
