The President, The Spymaster and Watergate with Jefferson Morley (50th Anniversary)

- Fifty years ago on June 17, 1972, five men were discovered breaking into the Democratic National Committee Headquarters at the Watergate in Washington, DC. President Nixon, desperate to shut down the FBI’s investigation of the crime, sought the support of CIA Director Richard Helms.
To mark this unhappy anniversary join us for a discussion with Jefferson Morley the author of the new book, "Scorpion’s Dance: The President, the Spymaster, and Watergate," and James Rosen, author of "The Strong Man: John Mitchell and the Secrets of Watergate." In conversation, Morley and Rosen will explore the concealed, deadly power struggle between Nixon and Helms, two Cold Warriors whose edgy relationship dated back to the 1950s.
Both president and spymaster knew secrets about the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba as well as off-the-books American government and CIA plots to remove Fidel Castro and other leaders in Latin America. Both had enough information on each other to ruin their careers. Nixon knew that most of the Watergate burglars were retired CIA agents, contractors, or long-term assets with deep knowledge of the Agency's most sensitive secrets.
Nixon and Helms circled each other like scorpions, defending themselves with the threat of lethal attack. Morley and Rosen, both veteran Washington reporters, will discuss the various theories of Watergate and the long-neglected evidence Morley has uncovered to give a new perspective on one of America’s most notorious presidential scandals.

Thanks for sharing. Morley’s new book is excellent
.. as a German Biologist - I was Stunned - when I read from Ehrlichman - JFK and Bay of Pigs were the same for Nixxon. And then - Bay of Piggers show up as Private Investigators... is this a connection of Nixxon and Bay of Piggs and JFK... there was a Pepsi Meeting at Fort Worth that very moment - NIXXON had to be there... all statistic random “co Incidences”...
yes. People hate when important people and events are determined by random. It cant be a traffic accident that killed Patton or Princess Diana, right? They are too special right? IMO random is scarier than some cabal behind the scenes.
Nothing sells books and documentaries like conspiracy mysteries. All of this is word of mouth and anecdotal. No evidence for any of it. It's all up to interpretation.
@@brianlogan4243 ...Right! As long as we follow blind the State Ideology and Religion - we are safe - as long as the Tyrant lasts. Then fast forward to the next Ideology...
Good to see James Rosen.
One interesting takeaway is the fact that Helms and the CIA listened to the Nixon in White House about shutting down the FBI investigation into Watergate..
My uncle caught the burglars when he headed the DC Bureau of the FBI
It's always the "little notes", the verbal asides that give insight.
Curious with your newest book about the CIA "Scorpions nest" which I intend to buy 🙂 Curious that since you were the guy who exposed the CIAs George Johannides with the HSCA and also with Hunts deathbed confession of being a "bench warmer" to the JFK coup in 63 do you offer any comments about first Johannides involvement and then Helms and Nixon ?
Interesting. I'll look forward to a companion book about the 2016 election, the FBI, and any White House involvement. The comments at the end about accepting the "Fourth Branch of Government" are disturbing.
"Man you don't leave the Agency." Haha
James Jesus was a KGB just like his buddy Philby
From my research,
I do not believe he was.
@@bombatta1544 a lot of old CIA guys believe he was the mole 👍
Your questions are too long and you are ordering him to answer your questions. Morley is not on the stand. This is extremely rude to the person you are interviewing.
Newsmax 🙄. I'm out.
I agree on Newsmax, but Jefferson Morley is excellent and if you want to know how much influence the intelligence services have on America, he’s the guy.
Did Clay Shaw have the "QKEnchant" CIA classification as well?
Bay of Pigs was code for JFK
Interesting presentation although Rosen tended to monopolize the conversation and rather gratuitously plugged his own book's conclusion that John Dean ordered the Watergate break-in. I'll be buying Morley's book. (I read and learned a lot from The Ghost.)
I've enjoyed watching the Spy Museum's many videos over the years, especially when Peter Earnest was the moderator. (So sorry to learn of his passing.) Hate to say this, but Amanda's voice is grating to listen to. Maybe if she didn't talk so loudly it would help--or maybe a voice coach?

Was helms a homosexual just like hoover ,🤔
Lots of flimsy speculation. I also once held the belief that Oswald didn't act alone--that some cabal or plot took him out and not some nobody with a $6 mail order rifle. I bought all the books--all the documents.
When Visicalc came out 40 years ago, I put together my first spreadsheet of the names of those who had to be involved in a conspiracy if it wasn't just Oswald acting alone. When the list grew to 200, I realized there can be no conspiracy that stays silent that long with hundreds of people from all walks of life involved. A CIA mole who sold out the agency (and country) for a few hundred thousand could have gotten millions for the inside version of the "CIA was involved" story. Or, the KGB would have made sure the story got out to damage the CIA.
The FBI, CIA, State, and other agencies had a lot to hide about Cuba, the mob, dirty tricks, the assassination of Diem and all that. But involvement in the Kennedy assassination was not one of them. Upon long reflection, it is my inescapable conclusion that Kennedy was unfortunately killed by a nobody acting alone with a mail order rifle.
Posner's "Case Closed" pretty much wraps it up. James Reston Jr.'s book "Accidental Victim" explains why.
