Closed cell foam means it’s made of closed separate cells or bubbles; air can’t escape from the bubbles which gives it the bounce and stops it squashing flat.

How do you think these work on horses? Have you tried them yet? 😊

They currently just come in size large, but I presume in the future may also come in a medium like the rest of the LeMieux pads. Hope that helps?

Can you ever use a half pad without a full saddle cloth underneath?

No, you shouldn't really, it's not how they're designed to be used. And the material often isn't designed to sit directly onto skin. :)

Please could you do a video on VIP pads if possible?

My horses back is a bit sensitive since my last saddle didn't fit at all (my former saddle fitter said it did but his back got worse and worse) what kind of half pad would be the right one for us? Just to make the saddle a bit more comfortable for him.

It depends on how much bulk you need under there. But a nice safe/easy option is something like a prolite, or the Lemieux prosorb pad. Or even a VIP pad.

I don't understand how an even halfpad could narrow your saddle fit. If you have four example a gullet bar, and line the inner edge with something 2cm thick - then dont your new inner edge mirror the one you had? And then if you were to place said bar on the horses back, it would now be slightly raised. Angles would be preserved? Only if the bar was a triangle but not if its U or irregularly shaped? I'm sure there is a reason for everyone saying narrowing can happen, but I am really struggling with this concept haha -please help the confused like me 🙃

YOU ARE RIGHT!! They lift them, the angle of the saddle would be preserved! It's a myth that has been proven to be false... You could say they can help with a saddle that's too wide because a horse has muscle missing/muscle atrophy- and the half pad can fill in the gap where the muscle should be. But really it's about filling in the gap where the saddle sits too LOW because that's their job, to LIFT - but also to add shock absorption x

Yeah but now you have 4cm added to the inner edge. So it has 4cm less of open space

Hi, thanks for your interesting videos.
Do you know someone who already used those memory foam half pads intensively (same horse/saddle)? Do they still come back well in shape in time ? This could be an issue with memory foams, when the same pressure is applied in the same area for a long time.

Yes. This is a good point- and also applies to the closed cell type foam too :) it would be interesting to know what their life expectancy is.

Hi! ive had an acavallo memory foam pad for about 4 years now and got them when they first came out for about 140€ so id say they are a very similar quality, and it held up very very nicely! at first they feel rather bulky on the horse and stiff in the winter, but adjust really well with body heat so after removing the saddle it remains in the shape of the horses back and the saddle and not the original shape, however by the next day they look exactly like they did before being used and this still happens after 4 years of using it on and off on our broodmares that tend to change a lot over the year! i hope this helped in some way xx

Endurance riders have used closed cell pads for years. I love toklat. They have lasted for years and thousands of miles.

My horse just hated this kind of pad. Flew straight up in the air and kicked out every ride in it, sometimes several times in one ride. Had to switch to a mattes. Idk why he didn't like it.

sometimes you can't ever say why... sometimes they just say 'no'.... other times they say 'yes please!'
I compare it to me and shoes... some shoes fit me and i hate them, others i LOVE

the only thing I don't like about memory foam is that it heats up way too much!
