I believe Stew Mac calls it a "fret end dressing file" - got one myself. After nipping the tangs, Ken Parker uses a Dremel and cutoff wheel to carve the bottom of the fret ends slightly concave to ensure the fret ends stay flat on the fingerboard. There is also a concave hemispherical grinder drill bit to easily shape "hot dog end" frets on the market. From the player's point of view, equal spacing between strings is better than center-to-center (from a string spacing ruler or doing the math), but it depends on the string gauges you're running - change gauges and your nut's wrong. Z-files should theoretically give the best crowning results - always sold out every time I try to get one. A tool or process being easy and fun to use is all good and fine - but in the end, results are what counts.
I was hoping you would get to your pattern makers vice, and I wonder if you have any thoughts over it and the StewMac version ? I'm starting into guitar repare.
I am going to watch this video, but I’m 3 minutes in and when you mentioned barely moving to reach your desired tool, I realized that HOW you organize your tools would be beneficial as well as the tools themselves

we loved this video so much - we watched it slowly - tool by tool - your generosity of spirit and sharing is legendary
Thank you so much for taking the time to pass on your wisdom
Thanks for sharing 👍
Great video, I too use most of those tools, including the festool orbital palm sander. The right tools make building extremely fun.
YES on power tool video review!
Thank you from Quebec ! 😊

That fret end file is top notch.
