    In Denmark, after many decades of offering free lessons, Danish lessons became privatized and I could no longer afford the lessons when I first moved here and my progress came to a stop.
    After discovering your channel, I have been so inspired to start learning Danish again and would like to contribute and support your cause in producing more videos that help so many people.
    Thank you for doing this, I listen and watch and study every night.

      It’s important to know that this type of R is actually a vowel-controlled R or an R-controlled vowel, so technically, it’s not just a regular A vowel, but an R-controlled A in this case, and one could even consider it an A-controlled R, as there is a slight R sound attached to it even when not emphasized, like in the word fisker, so one can tell that there is an R in spelling by hearing it, even without seeing the spelling, kinda like in many German words that have AR / ER / IR / OR / UR letter combinations and like in certain English words, even though the difference can be very subtle sometimes - the R-controlled vowels are a type of soft Rs, like the other Danish R and like the Icelandic / Gothic / Norse / Faroese Rs and like the Rs used in the neutral American accent and in Brazilian Portuguese / Welsh / Irish / Cornish / Manx / Breton / Scottish Gaelic / Latin etc, which are all soft types of Rs, and, this particular type of R which is vowel-controlled (when there is more vowel sound than R sound) or vowel-controlling (when there is more R sound than vowel sound or when there is half R sound and half vowel sound) can also have many variations, like every other type of R, so it can be more pronounced, and it can also be less pronounced, to the point where it sounds like it’s the vowel controlling the R or something like that, so there can be more R sound and less vowel sound (as in many or most English words and like in the Danish words ending in ere) and there can also be more of the vowel sound and less of the R sound (like in many Danish words like fisker that end in er) and it can even be half R sound and half vowel sound, and many of the variations in-between, so with every sound (vowel / consonant / diphthong) or type of sound it’s like a full spectrum with many different variations for each type of sound made with each possible technique and intensity etc!

      Hi Jane! Thank you very much for your kind words.
      Unfortunately, the old-school way of teaching languages is still wide-spread.
      But this approach is not very good, especially with a language like Danish, where the biggest difficulty for most people is pronunciation.
      In my teaching (for the moment I do online only), I mostly use target language only and do very few grammatical explanations, a lot less than on my videos here.
      Unfortunately, my teaching approach is not easy to do in videos with one-way communication.

    Dav Mic! Det er altid en fornøjelse at kigge på dine videoer. Tusind tak for denne og alle dine andre videor jeg har set indtil nu. Det er interessant at bemærke at den danske R næsten bortfalder i ord som f.eks "eller", "mark" osv. Det gør den også i tysk, rigsengelsk og de fleste britiske dialekter af engelsk. Hav en rigtig god weekend :-)

    • @MicsLanguages
      @MicsLanguages  2 роки тому +1

      Hej Multilingo Man! Tak, det er godt at du får noget ud af mine videoer. Og ja, DET danske R i slutningen af stavelser (bogstaver har artiklen et/det) er næsten det samme som det tyske og britiske. Når man sammenligner det danske og det tyske R, så ville jeg sige at for eksempel endelsen -er udtales lidt anderledes i Hochdeutsch, men i Østtyskland er denne lyd muligvis helt identisk med det danske -er. Med alle de dialekter du har studeret, kender du vel sikkert også det stereotypiske billede som tyskere har af østtyskere, fx folk fra Sachsen.
      En rigtig god weekend også til dig! 😉

    • @multilingoman8188

      @@MicsLanguages Tak for dit hurtige svar! Ja, jeg har studeret tysk og besøgt Leipzig så jeg kender godt de stereotypiske billeder vesttyskere har af østtyskere og omvendt! Ja, jeg tror at jeg hører forskellen mellem DET danske -R og det højtyske R i endelsen -er. Det sidstnævnte ligner det britiske mens det danske R udtales nok lidt nedre og måske fremre i munden, Endnu en gang ønsker jeg en rigtig god weekend :-)

    • @thissunchild
      @thissunchild 2 роки тому

      I mine britiske ører lyder det ikke, som om 'R' er bortfaldet. Sådan vil jeg ikke beskrive det, but that's because my way of understanding letter combations is different to a native Danish speaker. I would say that the R combined with the 'E' takes on a different sound. It's not gone. It's morphed😄

    So this is where you have a huge advantage when you know german, I think. The end-r sound in Danish seems to be the same as in German. When you say "fisker" in Danish, the end-er sound sounds exact the same as when you say the German word "Fischer".

    • @MicsLanguages
      @MicsLanguages  4 роки тому +3

      Yeah the R is the same in these two languages, both types of R. But I would say the ending "er" is slightly different. Where Danish has this rounded lip sound, closer to an "o", German has a complete "a" sound. But not in all parts of Germany, for example in Eastern Germany it seems like the sound would be closer to the Danish - er sound

      Hej Lulu, thanks for your comment!
      I didn't mean that there is no connected speech in Danish, I meant that the R is not assimilated into the next word like in English. Sorry for not making clear that I was referring only to the R! Lisbet Thorborg has some amazing resources, I have used her pronunciation books dansk udtale for begyndere & dansk udtale i 49 tekster a lot in my teaching 🙂

      Oh, and also På vej til dansk. That's by far the book I've used the most through the years

      @@MicsLanguages Yes, I am using that book, too. And it is very good.(Unfortunately, the dictionary published by same writer, which is bad.😞) Any other books or website you recommend? Thank you. 😉

      Oh, I didn't know there was a dictionary by Lisbet Thorborg 🤔
      What else do I recommend?
      Well, the next book after På vej til dansk is Videre mod dansk, same author. Same model, very good as well.
      Then the next after that in level of difficulty is Så kan du lære det, by Frank Sebastian Hansen & Einar Helleland. This is only a few years old, but really outstanding! Maybe even better than the Thorborg books.
      Apart from that... 🤔...well, Dr.dk/tv for watching Danish TV, lots of old programs, most of it with good subtitles.
      DR Ligetil is also a good thing. It has written news in easier Danish than normal news.
      Basby.dk has a lot of great grammar exercises and also some pronunciation stuff.
      That was it. Hope it helps!

      Thank you for helpful reply. :) :) :)
      1. I checked that dictionary(Dansk-engelsk ordbog for udlændinge, writer: LB, KGJ, WGJ) You are right, it is not written by Lisbet. It is good with Lydskiftsystemet Dania, but the sentences translation are very strange. My teacher suggested to use it for check vocabularies of Lydskiftsystemet Dania in Lisbet's books only. Please let me know if there is any other good dictionary you recommend. :)
      2. About books from Lisbet, how do you think the "Breve 1 & 2"?
      Is it useful? I am considering to study this book or not.
      3. I already finished the books (På vey til Dansk and Videre mod dansk). So I am considering of which book for DU 3.3. As your recommendation of Så kan du lære det, I think Midtvejstil til Dansk (by Lisbeth) are the same level as DU 3.3. Can you tell what difference between them? Are they similar?
      4. For DU 3.4 and higher lever, can you suggest some good books?
      Thank you. :) :) :)

    Hvordan ordner du de runde bagtungevokaler? Min chilenske elev har ingen problemer med fortungevokalerne, da hun kan fransk. Men et ord måske har hun store problemer med at sige.

    • @MicsLanguages
      @MicsLanguages  Рік тому

      Altså hun har jo allerede to runde bagtungevokaler i i sit modersmål: o og u.
      Forskellen mellem o og å er svær, selv for tyskere som ellers har alle de andre runde bagtungevokaler.
      Prøv at føle hvad du selv gør når du går fra o til å. Din tunge kommer sandsynligvis længere ned, og læberne åbner sig også en lille smule mere. Hos dig er forskellen nok minimal, da du er modersmålstalende og kan slippe afsted med små forandringer i munden.
      Men du kan bede hende om at overdrive bevægelserne, i det mindste i starten. Å bliver også skabt lidt længere nede i halsen, men det er svært at forholde sig til, da det ikke er synligt.
      Håber det hjælper :)

    I have a lot of trouble with the letter G like with my Mom's cousin Dagmar. In Canada they say 'dag-mar' [hard g like in a paper bag] not 'dow-mar' Or in the name Mogens or the word bog [book] People always said my Mom's name Rigmor as rig-more [hard g] When is the "G" soft, hard or silent? Is there a rule. Many of my ancestors came from a farm/estate? called Gamle Rybjerggaard...in Rybjerg Sogn i Viborg Amt. is it pronounced roo-beh-gore?

    What do you think of my idea: To start learning Danish, just learn the vowel sounds. Perhaps this is is a reasonable start, perhaps not, because they are not independent of the consonants.

    If you teach this to a German speaker, it's not too difficult. Just leave 30% of the consonants away that are still pronounced in German. What I wonder is, how do you teach it to your children to add even more silent letters in writing than in English?

    • @MicsLanguages
      @MicsLanguages  Рік тому

      Yeah, I would suppose that Danish children have more difficulties learning to write in their language than fx Spanish speaking children. It would be interesting to see this topic discussed in a scientific study or something. I don't know of any though.
