Lure fishing for Pollack | Ballachulish Bridge - Scottish Highlands

- Tried to keep this one short.
I didn't intend to fish here, it wasn't somewhere I had my eye on at all. But as we crossed the bridge on our way to our next wild camp spot, Sarah said to me "why don't you just pull over and go and fish it for a couple of hours?" When I asked what she meant, her response "Well you can't keep the van in a straight line for looking at the scenery, and we are so early, you will only be bored!" And that was that.
We had passed a couple of places that looked in a similar state. Small entries in to larger sections of the lochs, where there looked to be a deep channel and a big tidal rip. Kelp surrounded the outer edges, which to me just looked like a paradise for some big Pollack.
It turned out to be far shallower than I imagined, with huge lumps of rock and kelp even out in the middle of the channel. But there were fish!
Until next time, take care, and tight lines!
Thank you for taking us with you, another stunning mark you've shown, fantastic 👍🏼
Any time mate, glad you enjoyed it!
I’ve a cottage in Ardtoe and look down below this bridge every time I head towards the Corran Ferry and always plan to fish this beat. I’ve actually never fished this spot even though I’ve had 20yrs to do so. This is the bridge heading north after Glen Coe village yeh?
Now that's some statement mate. I've only crossed that bridge a handful of times and couldn't cross it again without having a go.
I've had plenty pollack from that very mark up to 18lb, seedless is a must but you're still fighting the kelp all day lol... Theres a little mark east of there where a float and worm will produce the goods... Fishing the bottom is hopeless lol...
I can't wait to go back mate! Ideally summer, so can comfortably fish long days. But a decent breeze to keep the migs away
Me and the missus go Scotland every year,Ballachullish was the first place we stopped many years ago, can’t pretend I know the best fishing spots but Mull is a truly beautiful little isle.👍🏻
I'm keen to find a couple of options to stop at when we venture up that way. Mull is on our list of places to visit, too, we checked whether or not we can get our van on ferries and so far looking good!
@@theawfulangler yeah even big vans and campers are fine on the ferries you just have to be cautious on the isle quite a lot of the roads are narrow single track with fairly sparse passing places, but it is stunningly beautiful, but then nowhere in the entire NW has disappointed us.😍
As a local, your best to use silver spinner's, or mackerel bait ,the white belly of the mackerel is good for catching other fish rather than pollock, Ballachulish is very snaggy 'head for this place called bishop bay on the other side which is good for catching pollock ,and if your fishing on the same side ,head for caolnacon campsite, at the dog narrows or the narrows, there's plenty of cracking spots ,and the narrows are a deep and there's a spot to wild camp, across from caolnacon campsite, and when you head for skye ,go to Broadford pier and fish aff the end of the pier, you will catch alot of fish ,I've caught tons of different fish from this sea loch mackerel, wrasse, pollock,
That's incredible mate thanks! I'm sat here wondering what I want to do for the channel by the end of the year, and Scotland keeps popping in to my head. Possibly late summer, maybe September time.
That's one of my favourite marks. Caught my first 5lb+ sea trout there a few years back on a little silver shad. its too shallow for metals there, but there are some very deep water marks a mile or so either side of it, including a very well known skate mark.
A 5lb sea trout that must have been a great scrap? I'll be going back up this year, so I will have to try and find a couple more marks around there
@@theawfulangler aye, it put up a hell of a scrap. a small crowd gathered to watch it. theres a big kelp bed to the right of the slipway there, and it holds a lot of decent sized predatory fish. it is a tackle graveyard though.
I wonder if a shallow dive, plug type lure. with lots of surface splashing might work ?
Possibly mate. There were that many seals and cormorants about, I was nervous to try a top water.
@@theawfulangler yeah , you cant risk that mate.
Nice fish. And looked like a lovely spot.
Cheers Mat, certainly put up a decent little scrap for a smallen!
Only just seen this post
For future trips I’ve had good sport with lures at the bridge over the Atlantic I’m may and October 👍
Cheers Aidan, definitely be going back up that way at some point this year buddy
Fished further up the Loch a few times and caught nothing. Hope to return soon with the inflatable boat. We caught a few fish up near Bunree.
Tide rips through there though so hope you have a strong reliable motor
stunning venue
Really is Jeff, can't wait to get back up there
Hi mate other side on the slip way directly across from whare u were water deep over there big pollock ...
Cheers Stewart, as always so close but so far 😅 next trip 👍🏼
Go some more markes round there for pollock , congers, rays. Al let u now later am at work just now . Cheers m8.
Nice one mate, get yourself over on Instagram, you should be showing your fish off. Plus then you can drop me a private message. ;)
Sorry m8 don't do social media dose ma nut in 🤣 should have got ur number from u ma bad 🤦.
Next time your up this way give me a message,,,I'll make sure you get some top notch bait ( free) pretty sure I spotted your van in oban ...ps I do a quite a bit of fishing around this area ,,,top vids ,,,subscribed👌
It's a deal mate, I'll hold you to it!!
One of my favourite places to fish is Ballachulish/leven.
Didn't work so well for me this trip, but I'll give it another go next time definitely
@The Awful Angler you sound local to me... there's some nice conger marks further up leven that are definitely worth a look. 😉
I doubt it mate, I'm all the way down in Derby! But by all means if you want to share some spots with me, it will make the 10hr drive all the more worth it 😉👌🏽
@The Awful Angler I'm matlock. 😂
Most of my family live in Derby, I live at the side of Alfreton, grew up in matlock.
probably a 30+ ron thomson silver ! spinner work a treat,,
I've heard the other side is a better venue, less snags.
lythe = Pollack in gaelic smoked really tasty
I'll be sure to keep my eyes out for that on the menu next time Jezz, cheers 👍🏼
How about trying a few Savage Gear Seekers of varying weights with a single rather than treble to avoid snagging, or maybe a few weedless with a selection of chebruska weights to suit the depths and current ?
I've got a few seeker reps, but they're all 40-60g maybe I should invest in some lighter ones. Then I had to Google the cheburashka weights, never seen them, but they look a good option! Cheers buddy 👍🏼
They really twist your line unless you use a swivel.
@@richardjones2811 I always use a swivel as connector between braid and mono. Don’t trust braid to mono knots and a swivel to which I clip pre made lengths of mono are quick and easy to swap over after getting snagged.
Braid -> swivel -> mini link -> mono -> mini link -> lure.
@@dmp2000uk I totally trust the uni to uni knot between my braid and fluorocarbon leader.
Had a few large Pollock take me into snags and had to break the line.
The line came back fine but lost the lure unfortunately.
I go braid into leader into a quicklink as I don't use lures that will spin the line.
@@richardjones2811 Do you cast the knot through the guides, and if so does it ever catch and cause a wind knot ?
I use palomar knots throughout and then a uni-knot at the lure as the weak point so I lose the last amount of tackle if snagged. Took me ages to learn how to avoid snagging but now rarely lose a lure.
On Islay theyre called Cuddies...
What I would use there buddy would be a 20g Abu Toby in white flash 😉
Really? I've only use the Tobys over deep open water! Got a box full off all sorts of colours!
@@theawfulangler Match the prey, I caught plemty of Garfish here in Anglesey this summer using tobys. Sink a little more for Bass maybe but hey I even caught Pollock using a surface lure this year.
No rules pal just sometimes the trusted lures will out perform the new lures which catch more people than fish 😉
Man after my own heart, my go to is the dexter wedge. Plenty of gar and bass of barmouth this summer on the old faithful
@@theawfulangler Very nice, I do like Barmouth and the Mawddach Estuary is brilliant.
Drawback with pollack is you need to get down i to the kelp and be able to bully them out so fines fishing will lose you more fish
I have found that if you put the right lure in front of them, you can tease them out!
line thru seeker sandeel metal
