you ever feel like the quake community has the most talented people ever? it's a tiny community, but there are so many "heavy hitters" who work as engineers/scientists and then make stuff for quake on the side.
Iron wail is amazing but on the other hand vkquake is also amazing. Thankfully, quake is a lot like ice cream. You can have both flavors at once!
Your editing skills are increasing dramatically, love those transitions with the alpha channel effect on the opening and closing doorways as the camera flies through a section map in engine. Brilliant!
the real unsung hero of the Quakespasm engine is its original creator and maintainer of the website with detailed development history, which kept the code focused on using a C base (functional code) and also kept focus the entire time on Performance, no CPU cycles being wasted, which allows us to have Quake mods that never give us slowdowns, you can thank this one person 👍
Rendering the game at 1000 fps is cool but all its doing is making your system work hard for no reason. Clamp it to your refresh rate.
how can you render so much with so nothing as hardware? current games optimization is a myth nowdays.
Ironwail is great but Quakespasm is currently not far behind when it comes to performance actually. I have a version of Quakespasm Spiked from march of this year (don't remember the exact version number, called Revision or something like that, 2024-03-01). On that exact spot in Tears of the False God on older QSS versions I got the biggest fps drop in any Quake map I played - down to 80-100 fps. The new version from march has a massive performance update and on that spot on the map it's now 300-320fps. That is on i7-6700K so nothing special by todays standards.
If GZDoom enables the developers to give us Selaco, I can't wait to see what Ironwail will give us.
These new features are awesome! I think the only thing that it lacks it's a strong particle system (like QSS) to support Arcane Dimension's special effects (like smoke, custom trails, blood splats, rain, snow, etc) and realtime light/shadows to support those new maps from Quake Rereleased :)
I am playing Peril 3.0 that can only run on Ironwail, and seeing 200+ enemies in a wide open space with a lot of detail while still running at a 144 fps made me go wtf.
Ironwail blows the remaster out of the water so hard it's almost embarrassing.
It would be amazing if you did a detailed video like this on
I'll always love any news regarding Quake, but your videos are not only top notch coverage, but editing too! Thanks for this! I can't wait to try it out for myself.
dude your videos have gotten so damn good! wow, best one to date
this is some amazing stuff. the lack of QoL features in quake ports relative to what I'm used to in doom has been one of the elements deterring me from putting more time into the game, so this is very welcome to see
Ok, you had me at "mouse menus". It's the one thing that I loved most about Mark V and other engines don't do. Also, holy crap dumptruck, these animated transitions are awesome!!! They're probably a bit time consuming to make, but man they add so much visual flair, good job!!!
Damn, I played through Tears' with my two brothers on QSS and just settled for the frame dips figuring that it was a hard limitation common to all source ports.
So there's a new release tomorrow? Nice! I only just discovered Ironwail about two weeks ago and I love it. Curious for new features.
Oh dang I have to check this out. Saw a twitter post of his ages ago of the optimizations he was doing and it looked so insane, I forgot what it was called and this is it!
Love everything about this. The Channel, the engine, the game, the community. Quake for life!! ❤
