Retired contractor here. Great job! TIP: When marking holes for the cabinet doors and drawers hardware, create a template, then drill drill some holes in it. You may not have all the exact same size, but saves so much time taping, measuring the front.
I think it turned out great! Love the white cabinets and the darker wood island. It was too dark before you painted it the cabinets white, so definitely a good choice to do that!
I don't know anything about trade or woodworking or renovation and all that stuff but i love watching your content. Subscribed and liked all of your videos that i have watched. Really looking forward to this home renovation series. Keep up the cool work
I started construction work a year ago, love the work, in renovation too. Honing my skills one project at a time. Just hope I can do that kind of beautiful and quality work one day! And I love that you're in Canada, since I know what you use will also be available for me.
I felt your pain removing the parquet flooring. I had to do the same when thing in my old house, and it was a PITA to remove. Had to borrow my neighbor's floor scrapper which made the job easier.
I think repainting the cabinets white and leaving the island balanced it out better. My only suggestion, because the kitchen is beautiful is this. You should run a waterline over to the coffee bar. Having to refill coffee machines and the like makes it super easy. I did this for our coffee bar and its my wife favorite thing.
"I just didn't have the confidence".. LIAM!!! Do you know how incredibly talented you are? You would have made it work. This kitchen is absolutely stunning (I especially love the Bailey's next to the Keurig! 😂).
I've always loved your work and craftsmanship. Renovating my entire house myself, gives me pleasure to see you perform the same work so beautifully. Sooo glad you saw the "eww" factor with the stained cabinets. But hey, until you do it, you don't know. Incredible work for 1st time, but you got skills to match!
Loving the videos man. I'm a renovator and electrician as well in the US. You do good work man keep it up. Don't skimp on the blocking next time 😂 and kregg makes a good jig for cabinet hardware. It's worth every penny to speed it up and make every piece identical.
Oh man this video came at a great time. We are in the market for a home and I found 2 that I really like and they both have a galley kitchen. This idea maybe better than knocking down a wall and just relocate the kitchen. Thank you for this video. You did an awesome job and the stain cabinets would had looked great if it turned out how you wanted them to because the original idea was beautiful. And noted on the number of canned lights.😅 Great job!
WOW!! I've been wondering how this was going. I knew it would be great but this is just beautiful! I live in a 90 year old house. What a dream come true it would be to start over like you did here. Gorgeous work!
Beautiful! I would consider adding an additional curtain panel to each side of your sliders to really give it a luxurious feel and make it easier to actually cover the doors when needed.
I always look forward to your videos!!! Also, finding out you play TTRPGs (or at least D&D) makes you even cooler! You should totally try to make a custom gaming table that can act as a nice functional dining table when you're not adventuring.
You did amazing! You should be so proud of this work! I wish you could come help me in Ohio! Lol epic, would love to see you branch out into kitchen renos to go along with your bathroom mastery!
When I'm staining woods that tend to be blotchy instead of using stain I'll add some Trans Tint dye to shellac and apply it. Because the shellac (and color) stays on the surface, it doesn't penetrate the wood unevenly, which is how blotchiness occurs. After the shellac I hit it with a polyurethane topcoat and it generally looks great.
I'm always amazed at what you do. I know you're still learning when it comes to cabinets, but maple is incredibly difficult to stain (as you've learned). It's best to use something else, but if you want to stick with maple, instead of staining the wood, stain the polyurethane and spray it on. Much more even that way.
You did a great job once again! I like it better as well with the white cabinets ( white cabinets will always be in style I think) and nice that you’ve left the brown border around the fan to repeat the color of your island. Bravo
How does 20 or so cheap drawer handles add "a lot of value" to a house? That's like $100 dollars worth of fixtures, I can't image that has much impact at all - if any?
It’s just his opinion, and I happen to agree. He did a fantastic job, however, black cabinet pulls are timeless while brass are reminiscent of the 80’s/90’s spec home builds and be out of style in five years.
@@chalkoutline6504 black knobs last the test of time. Especially on white or grey cabinets. Same with black door hinges, door knobs, and light fixtures. Black water fixtures however don’t hold up and are hard to keep clean over time. Better to go chrome for anything with water.
Just an fyi i would have checked the adhesive on the parquet floor and any vinyl for asbestos. If you take it up and disturb it you will need to get an air scrubber. You could have just gone over the parquet and sheet vinyl. They can act as s moisture barrier. The goal is to encase the asbestos. Engineered wood floor can be glued right on top of the parquet. Personally i love the parquet especially if you were doing a mid mod design.
If you decide to try staining again in the future try a coat of shellac first, it's a pre-stain conditioner that helps to even out splotches. I use water based so it also raises the grain, that way when I give it a light sanding after there's no worrying about that grain raising happening when stain or a clearcoat hits it
Oh I assure you I tried a coat of shellac first, as well as about 100 other things😂 I actually found a homemade concoction through another UA-cam video worked slightly better than the shellac but either way they still just weren't it
I am very glad you like it… but I really cannot stand stacked tile. Staggered or nothing in my opinion. But, I realize this is your house, and you like it, so I’m happy it’s all worked out the way you wanted it, more or less. 😊
Normally when I watch home reno shows and I say "oh here we go, all white again". But this decision that you made was ESSENTIAL. It made it the way it's supposed to be. Great work guys, just amazing.
Thank you so much! I really don’t like all white/grey palettes but as you mentioned it somewhat had to happen here. The wood and warm accents help it out a lot though for me personally
ngl, I absolutely LOVED the brown cabinets at first, ive never seen a house with those color cabinets before. I feel maybe an accent color was missing and that's why it looked so dark. Its not my house so I have no say, but im definitely doing that color for my cabinets when I get a house.
Everything turned out wonderful. You and Sebastian work well together. A lot of work but it all paid off in the end. Kudos to you both. I hope you both had a Merry Christmas and will also have a healthy and prosperous New Year in 2025 and beyond. All of the best to you and your families always!
Mate, this is amazing!!! I've been watching the entire series and I'm really enjoying it. Id love to do something like this in the future. Im looking forward to more videos and to seeing the house completed. Take care and all the best.
@@WorkinwithWolkonI’ve probably said this before but what you do is akin to a superpower to me. People who can do this kind of thing are worth more than their weight in gold
A lot of designers are thumbing down white kitchens nowadays. But frankly I think they still look fresh and crisp! And the white makes the space look MUCH bigger than it was before! Well done!
White oak seems to be the biggest trend but ultimately in my area there is a huge demographic of a certain culture that pretty much only goes for white everything
Amazing detailed work as always Wolkon! Quick question, not sure how those air vented valves work, but I’m just worried the super hot water from the dishwasher is going to vent hot moisture/air into your walls creating condensation 😮… Then again, idk how they work, so I’m probably wrong! Anyways, always excited when you post man. Keep up the great work! Edit: Also the key to staining maple is not to sand it with 120grit or higher. It starts to close the pores of the wood, resulting in the blotchiness. Even at 100grit it starts to close pores but a lot less than 120 will.
Thanks! An AAV only allows intake air, not the other way around (unless of course it fails) so shouldn't be an issue in theory. In regards to the maple... I assure you I tried every method possible to get it to go nicely. Didn't use high grits at all as you've suggested and even tried MANY pre stain methods. Maple just ain't for staining imo
Bro!! House looks amazing! As always, great work. But next time you do popcorn ceiling try wetting it with a garden water sprayer and scraping it off. Leaves the Sheetrock mostly intact, very little repairs. No need to skim it all. Huge time savers. Pain in the butt but any way you skin it it’s a pain lol.
Turned out amazing. Think I'd personally have painted the cooker hood fully white too rather than leaving that one brown part, but regardless, stunning work. Wish you were in London!
Very good work, looks incredible. I liked the blochy stain but you made a good call painting them it was way to dark. Can't wait to see how the whole house turns out, I'm sure your going to make some crazy equity on this house house when you're done.
I was so excited to see a new video - especially your kitchen reno instead of the usual bathroom reno. The kitchen looks amazing, but I think you are seriously going to regret not having the dishwasher next to the sink. Was there no way you could’ve put the dishwasher next to the sink in the island? I’m looking forward to seeing more renos in your new place 😊

thank you so much!
The white cabinets really took it up a notch! Love watching your videos.
