This is incredibly helpful, thank you! Very clear points, the weight checking is a very good tip that I never thought of before. Great stuff man!
It's my go to for watering!
I haven't seen the most important detail in the video - quality of water. It can't be hard tap water. It has to be rainwater or demineralized/distilled water. That is essential.
But I did say that, just not directly. I was clear about avoiding tap water. Tap water that has been distilled, put through RO or a Zero water pitcher is okay. Which I did cover.
Can it be like a water bottle like a plastic one?
@@jaimewarrington5627no it needs to say distilled. It needs to have less than 50ppm of total dissolved solids. Most bottled water we buy for drinking is literally tap water that's been through a filter and bottled. I just grabbed an empty one from the recycling and it says 280ppm dissolved mineral salts (way worse than typical tap water), it's also been ozonated (not sure if that is harmful to plants but it's harmful to lots of small pets, then on the actual nutrition label it says it's got 40mg of calcium which is 3% of the daily recommended value. Then it's got the ppm breakdown (I'm Canadian so our labels are pretty great compared to the US) and it's got all kinds of crap in there including magnesium, bicarbonate, fluorine, nitrates, sulphates, chlorine, sodium, etc... The worse thing is it claims it's natural spring water, which is probably is, but then it was treated to kill any yuck in the water and all this stuff was added to do that. So definitely no, bottled drinking water WILL KILL your Venus flytrap UNLESS it's marked as distilled or RO and has zero additives. The pharmacy usually has gallon jugs for about a diary of distilled for use with CPAP and other medical things.
wow thank u for the tips very usefull
Fantastic information. Thank you.
Of course! Thank you!
When I first watched these vids, I thought that knowing the weight of the pot was silly, but it’s true! I also got a mini greenhouse recently, and the water doesn’t evaporate as quickly. It’s a little difficult to switch over, but I watch it best I can.
Keep up the great vids! 💖
Yes! If i had to constantly manually check all my water levels it would take me so long. I just pick up the pot and know instantly if it needs water. It's by far the best watering tip in my opinion! Thank you for your kind words!! It means the world to me!
Great watering tips. I have 8 vft that I have had for at least 5 years now and I haven’t lost one. The tip of the weight of the pot is good. I did this myself unknowingly but it’s good to know I was on the right track. Thanks for the info!
Of course Michael, once you get the weight down, you're good to go!
I got my first Venus flytrap at lawes
I love it when rain becomes a lifesaver at times.
Yes, sometimes rain can save the day!!
Thank you, and bless you! This was very helpful. I learned a lot!
That's great! Happy you got something out of it.
Thank you
Hey Plant Hub, Never received your plant tracker via email. So I just made one myself in Excel, Thanks anyway
Hey Steve, I'm really sorry about that. I've been trying to figure out why it doesn't deliver sometimes. Ive found that the form doesn't always deliver it to people but the pop up on my website does. I've removed the form and now only the pop up is available, at least until I can figure out why it's not delivering. If you were able to provide me with an email address either here or on Instagram, I could send you both that way.
For my climate, The PNW, i leave my pots outside year round outside in trays. In fact many of my smaller divisions often end up partially submerged for long periods of time.
The only rot issues ive had are from experimental media due to over fertilization. Oh and let some unacclimated TC plants flower- whoops.
Every year i like to try something new for the plants to get them growing bigger and better.
This is amazing! I'm glad it's working for you. I've definitely had rot issues with plants left in water. I've also had a lot of people reach out to me with rotted plants due to being left in pots. I firmly beleive that you always keep doing what's working though!
I leave my carnivorous plants siting in 20% of the pots length witch gives the plant just enough water to keep the soil wet but not enough to rot the plant. I also add sand and perlite to the soil for good drainage.
When you find a system that works, stick with it!
For how long do I have to leave it in the water?
@@Rivett66 I let the water completely dry out before watering again
What distilled water should I use?
Part two is going to cover this in detail, it will be dropping in the next few days. But, any distilled water is fine. As long as it's distilled. The processing of distilling leaves the dissolved solids behind.
Reverse osmosis water works too
It sure does. Any water with no to little dissolved solids. There are quite a few options, which is why I want to do a video on it!
Very informative video! Would you recommend the following schedule for water dionaeas? I grow them indoors under 20.000 lux of growing lights (summer - 16h, spring/fall - 12h, winter - 9h).
The system I'm thinking of is this:
Summer: 2 days in tray of water, 2 days off
Spring/fall : 2 days in tray of water, 3 says off
Winter: 2 daya in tray if water, 5 days off.
What do you think? 😊
good
Back in Nov. I picked up three of those poor capsule plants sold as Halloween gifts at my local grocery store, marked down to $2.99 from $12.00! They were in bad shape but I got them under some decent light and use tap water that's allowed to breath minimum 24 hrs., They're thriving. I moved all three into one 5 gal fish tank. There's a bottom layer of 1" gravel then I made a mix of carnivorous plant soil and sphagnum moss about 6" deep. since I repotted into the tank each plant has sent up shoots with buds twice. I snip them. I also feed one or two traps on each plant about twice a month with isopods I breed for my amphibians. I'm totally winging this but it seems to be working?
If it's not broke don't fix it. These plants are NEVER black and white. What works for some just doesn't work for others. I'd recommend that if they are growing and thriving, to keep it up! That's awesome that you grow isopods for your amphibians. The wife and I are talking about breeding mealworms for our chickens and flytraps!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Meal worms are great for both and super easy to cultivate. Something I'd recommend is getting your starters from a couple of different sources. It helps genetically to avoid inbred mutations. I've seen some adults that were just sad to look at.
Interesting, I'll definitely keep that in mind!
I never got the plant tracker and care sheet 😢
Great helpful vwideo. Can the VFT take 100-105f temps as long as I protect against scorching sun in my greenhouse? Thanks.
Yes, they definitely can. As long as they have been acclimated up to those temps. I wouldn't buy a new one and stick it in 105, however I had some live up to 109 last year where we had a heat wave that was well over 100 for over a week. I don't know if they could handle that daily for long periods of time, but they can withstand heat waves. If that's a sustained temp, definitely a greenhouse or some shade cloth for hot afternoon sun.
hallo
I am starting with Dionaea, and I am trying to understand better the water issue. Following your other video I bought the ZeroWater filter and I measured the waters with the PPM pen: I know now the best water OOB it's the rainy water (20-30 ppm), followed by my italian bottled water (60ppm), while my tap water is around 240 ppm. Of course after the ZeroWater filter they become 0ppm, but my question is: there's more? The origin will count? There's Ph involved?
thx
I don't bother with too much more, anymore than just getting the TDS to zero becomes too much work. I know chlorine is a big one and zero water pitchers filter out the chlorine. Ive been growing plants with zero water for a couple years now, I trust it.
In addition to top watering to flush the soil, is it a good idea to mist the surface to keep live sphagnum from drying out?
You can. I tend to avoid misting or top watering often with flytraps due to the possibility of crown rot. In the heat of growing season it's not an issue but when temps cool I try to avoid water at the top of the plant.
How do u get the moss to grow like that is it mixed in the substrate ?
My mossiest plants come from California carnivores. I do have some plants that grow moss naturally right out of the peat, not to quite that extent, but it does eventually grow like that with some constant watering and higher humidity.
hey! i just got a venus fly trap and they absorb the water super quickly (about 2-3 hours) maybe i'm not putting enough water for them (i put a little more than half an inch of water using the tray method) but they absorb it quickly. they are indoor venus fly traps. im new to this and just need some help LOL. since my venus fly trap absorbs the water so quickly should i immediately refill the water tray again? or wait a bit? whatever you think is best let me know. thanks.
Same here, 3/4 hours and the water is gone, but mine is indoors
If your plant is absorbing water in just 2-3 hours completely, definitely add more. If you notice the plant is sitting in water for 2 or 3 days you know you have added too much water. You want to make sure you are adding enough though. Definitely give those flytraps more water!
Hi I came across that AC condensation water can be used for the venus flytrap is that true ??? I'm planning to do the same as distilled water not available in my place
Yes! Most of the time it's fine. However, I talked to someone the other day that said their AC water was coming out at 400 PPM, he thought it was due to some rusting. So, before I committed to that, I'd probably measure with a TDS meter first, just to be 100% safe.

TQ for ur reply bro.
I bought my 1st Venus Fly Trap yesterday and I didnt know how to take care of it. So it looked so dry so I used tap water , I didnt know not to do that do you think it would be ok? The plant was the only one that was not dead. It did have a few dead leaves and I clipped them off. So I need to repot it and it is very small and I can use that moss like stuff to repot it correct? I am a beginner at the plant and flower grower. Doing ok so far. :D
I would probably flush the plant a few times with distilled water. Just let the water run out the bottom of the planter and it should help rinse out any of the salt or minerals left by the tap water.
It didn't survive. 💔
I live in a split household so I am only with the plant every other week. To you have any general tips for care for my situation
This will be tricky, is it being kept outside or inside? I would recommend a timer if inside. If outside, if you could at least have someone water it once a week for you while you are gone. Once it gets hot and the sun is warm, it will need to be watered every other day more than likely. Maybe even every day.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thanks. I’ve been leaving it outside and feeding it live bugs till it gets warmer and bugs start coming out. They have started to wilt over and turn black though 😔. I’m not sure why.
I grow my VFT inside and I still don't really know how long the water I place in my plastic tray should last for
I would just make sure it doesn't sit in water for more than a couple days. Let the tray dry out for a couple days, then water again.
Ahoj Water for sundews
1.)Can I water my sundews with tap water?
2.)Can I water that boiled and then cooled sundews with water?
3.)ed. Wysłano What water do you use for Drosera callistos ,Drosera anglica?
Does more sunlight make the traps grow bigger I have them out in full sun but really like feeding them easy to do with bigger traps
This is a water guide, so do you mean more water? If so, not necessarily, they need the right amount of water, more water does not mean bigger traps. However, if you mean feeding the traps bugs, then yes. Bugs are their fertilizer, so feeding them extra bugs is a pro! When VFTs are outside, usually all the bigger traps are closed with insects.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub the place I put them in gets full sun but not many bugs come through so I haven't seen the shadow of an insect through the leaves as of now so I keep them so I feed them Outdoors
I was just saying that it's much easier to feed them when there are bigger traps, since it's much easier to find bugs that will fit properly into them
Oh ya! You can totally feed them. I'd always just keep 1 trap or so open!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I only feed 1 trap and the rest are open
My husband thinks that battery water is bad for them, and I said to him that it’s the second best water to have besides rainwater. Am I wrong or is he having right?
Deionized water should be fine! I'd still want to measure TDS first, but I think you are okay!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Ok, thank you.😊
wouldnt tray water cause root rot over time?
It can, you have to be careful. They shouldn't sit in tray water all the time. The video discusses this though.
If not rainwater what bottled water you can use on them
Distilled. In the water section, there is a distilled water by thr gallon. Usually about a buck.
How do they get red inside?
Lots of light. Different cultivars will get more red, some stay really green. But the way to redden them up is a lot of sun or a lot of artificial light from a strong grow light.
