I have an M50 mark II, and I am very happy with it with its outdoors picture quality, and the limited video that I use it for. I was thinking of getting the RP as the M50 is quite disappointing in low light situations. I was eyeing both the RP and the R as a step up for the low light photography. Thank you for mentioning that the R is much better in low light, that part was not emphasized on other channels reviewing the two.
Not sure if anyone pointed it out, but you can have the spot AF on the R by pressing the INFO button when you're selecting the 1-point AF option from the Q menu.
Ya, if I’m not mistaken, that was added in a firmware updated later. In any case, it’s nice, but I still very much prefer the way the RP (and all of the other R series cameras) do it. I appreciate you chiming in with helpful info!
Great video. Subscribed. I just bought the RP, with 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f2 (All about compact size with this set) Hasn't arrived yet. I do only still photography, portraits, cityscapes, macro, and your video convinced that I made the right choice Thanks. The RP would have been almost a thousand dollars more and I don't think the extra features it has would have been super useful in my case.
Thanks man, great video, exactly what I was looking for. I am about to upgrade from my 6D & 5D mk II combo. Although I never had an issue with that IPB-compression (editing with proxies in FCP on a 2011 iMac is like a breeze), or with the single card slot, never missed AF or even focus peaking in video mode and still believe that great shots are made in camera, not in post. I think I'll give a chance to a used RP to check it out. As for lenses, I mainly use the 35 mm f2.0 IS, the razor sharp 85 mm f1.8 and the 100 mm f2.8 IS macro. Thanks again for the great content.
Great job, Justin! It seems to me that this is also timely since many wont be able to afford the R5/6 and so if they want to go mirrorless and stay with Canon then the R and RP are great choices
Justin Myers Yes I do, Justin. And not too long ago, Irene Rudnyk, who as a Canon ambassador is shooting with the R5, said that while she loved it, said, “But I also really liked the EOS R.” For someone using an R5 to say that...well...it’s pretty powerful
Good review. How would the RP stack up against the R6 for photography for a non pro? Ignore the obvious focus benefits of the R6 etc and frame rate but what about average Joe who’s looking for an all round FF camera

Would be a great starter that will cover all my shooting inc astro. I had L glass on 60D but looking forward to building up an RF portfolio with f/4 L (rumors are 24-70 f4 coming out soon)

If you have the budget for R6 and you’re not shooting action or doing any heavy video work you’ll get much better photos with an RP and a nice lens than you would with the R6. I own the R and RP and I focus on portraits and vlogs, and I was planning on selling the RP for an R6 but recently decided it’s not worth it, the added benefits of the R6 are very handy for very specialized situations (action, more heavily graded video, etc) and I realized the only real benefit I might like out of it is IBIS, however the “lacking” digital stabilization in the RP has been plenty good for my uses. I’m getting a nicer lens instead of a nicer body. Highly recommend.

Well done Justin plain clear English Yes We are contemplating moving on from our trusty 6D it has and is serving us very well and the R and RP look like excellent choices for us doing purely Studio and Portrait Photography of babies and families. and I will get an excellent EF 24-70 or a 24-105 lens..I'm confident they are going to be great and then focus more on creativity and interaction to capture great expressions
A few things I recommend to consider: Most importantly: rent before you buy. It’s difficult to tell which one will actually work better for your workflow and provide you the best value for your budget and needs. Places like borrowlenses let you rent online and get the gear shipped to you. If you are shooting weddings, it’s actually possible to rent a camera body specifically for when you have a wedding booked, at least to start. That way you could use some higher end gear for each wedding, but not be locked into to the price of buying the gear. Then, save some of the money you make for a camera purchase later on. Neither of these cameras here have two memory card slots. I have never personally had an SD card fail, but most wedding/event shooters prefer to have a backup since the event can’t be repeated. What lenses do you have or have you budgeted for? That will most likely make a bigger difference than the difference between these two camera bodies
Love my R coming from a 6D Mark I. I don’t do sports or weddings so it’s fine for me. Even bird shots are better than the 6D, though, if I were a serious wildlife shooter, I would get the R5 for the higher MP and faster shutter count. I do wish they would give the R animal eye AF, but, it has been pretty good without so far!
Justin Myers I’m not rich enough for the RF lenses, but it did make pitching the EF70-200L f2.8 III to my wife easier so I have that, the EF 24-105L f4 and the EF 100mm f2.8, not L Macro. Do you think the RP would be a good B camera for the R in terms of video? Since you lose out on C-Log capabilities with the RP, I worry footage won't look uniform between the two when color grading in post.
@@JustinMyersPhoto Gotcha. I have attempted to between C-log and S-Log but always felt like I could tell the difference between the two. I have also tried an 80D along side the R but the R footage just looks better when comparing both. Could just be inexperience on my end. I figured since the R and RP are pretty similar, with the R being just a bit better, that it would make sense to get an RP as a B cam.
I think so, yes. It also has a built in bracketing mode, so you could take several exposures and blend them together in post. But it’s all about what works for you. What are you currently shooting with?

I wanted to start with the RP paired with a RF 14-35 f.4 and improve the body as I go along but I am not sure if it's that good of a plan being all the poor reviews for the RP or even the Eos R
I wish canon gave the Rp the ability to shoot 1080 video with apsc lenses considering most people looking at the rp are canon apsc shooters. That was the deal breaker for me. I ended up selling all my apsc lenses and 80d and opted for the Nikon z6
@@JustinMyersPhoto id say the value drew me to the z6. With the kit lens I got it for a little more than the rp with the RF 24-105 f4, and it really gives me more bangs for the buck. Uncropped 4k and 1080p 120fps. It's been a learning curve and I miss the ease of use of the canon. But I'm really loving the z6 so far. It's amazing in low light , and the kit lens is really sharp
Just bought the RP and have to say, it's really a feature-rich, very versatile camera. Dunno why people gave initial bad reviews!? Perhaps they didn't really "get" all the features or how to use them. Bang for buck, compared to other cameras, it shoots awesome photos and video. Great review!
I had the RP and now the R, the R is a big upgrade in every way. The RP is basically a mirrorless, full frame Rebel. If it had an APS-C sensor, no one would even consider it. The M6 II has a better feature set, better sensor and its cheaper. Its not the worst choice for what it is but the small size, tiny battery, terrible EVF, poor 1/4000s EFCS only shutter etc...make it a less than desirable choice.
@@JustinMyersPhotoThe 32 megapixel sensor in the 90D/M6 II has a stop more dynamic range than the RP/6D II sensor, that's huge. Not only that but it has better color accuracy. I used the RP for a year and its an ok camera but as I said, its really an overpriced mirrorless Rebel. Should be about $600. The R has a much better sensor with TWO stop better DR, a larger and much better resolution EVF, more megapixels, bigger and better LCD screen, way better shutter that's actually mechanical, faster continuous shooting, way better battery life, much better video features, manual focus assist is awesome, top LCD, better weather sealing etc...then there are things like the RP having the card slot underneath with the battery like every other cheap camera, makes accessing it with a tripod or battery grip a pain in the ass. Not to mention the R is just faster at everything too, even connecting to WIFI for the Camera Connect app. I would only recommend the RP to a very new beginner on a super tight budget. The R is the much better camera, its really not even close.
@@JustinMyersPhoto Take a look at Photons to Photos or DXO Mark. The RP/6D II sensor is a terrible 11.9 stops of DR. The R/5D IV sensor is 13.6 stops. The highest Canon had up until the R5 was released. I dont agree the RP is capable as a professional camera. Just the fact its stuck with an EFCS only 1/4000s shutter makes it unusable for most professional work, let alone all its other shortcomings. Anything over 1/1600s shutter speed in bright sunlight with an f/1.4 lens or faster, and you get terrible EFCS artifacts that ruin your photos. I found that out the hard way. As you said, its suitable for beginners, not pros or even semi-pro photographers. Just my two cents as a 15 year pro photographer who shot with the RP for over a year,

I think more future cameras be like sony a7c...just the price has come way down like rp and add shutter protect. For $1800 not worth it...canon R or R6 be better for full features and experience. The rp is best entry and value ff. The a7s3 a7iii a7riv r5 r6...overpriced overhype lackluster certain things like no flip screen or small improvements but not big leaps...

@@edkensalexandre7043 well, if you’re worried, I would suggest renting the camera beforehand. But the R10 might even be an interesting option as well
