How to crop a video on a Mac in 2023 (without downloading any software)

- Cropping (or reframing) a video on a Mac in 2022 is easier than ever - but all the results on Google tell you to download iMovie or Wondershare Filmora or something. That is insane. You do not need to do that. Do this instead.
This is useful if you want to crop a video vertically to make it a vertical video, crop it into a square to make it a square video. You can easily and quickly make a video 16:9, 1:1, widescreen, letterbox, portrait, whatever. This would be helpful if you're trying to resize a video for Instagram Reels, an Instagram Story, or a TikTok. Any aspect ratio can be achieved with this powerful and forbidden technique. Aspect ratios. You don't have to read this, by the way. I am typing all this in here in the hopes that someone searching UA-cam or Google for "how to crop a video vertically on a Mac" also finds this video, since it would help them too. Which reminds me: you can do this on your MacBook Air, your MacBook Pro, your M1 Pro MacBook, your iMac, and even your Mac Pro. Those are all Apple Macintosh computers that run the "macOS" operating system.
If you you read this far for some reason, please go to / babylonian and check out one of my real videos. I promise they're good.

Great video Nick! A few suggestions for future obscure tech tutorials: The mic quality isn't nearly bad enough, nor is the video quality. Optimally you want 240p and mic audio that is clipping every time you breathe in too sharply. In addition, some non copyright music at hearing-damaging levels would also complete the video. Just thought I'd give some suggestions for next time!
next time i will do a loud text outro that says "THANKS FOR WATCHING!!!!!!!!!!!" with some Kevin MacLeod toy piano music under it
Yes
@@babylonian hey nick thanks for watching
@@babylonian dont forget to use the iMovie Pixie Dust title for that
@@babylonian I think scrap the mic completely, just type really slowly into notepad or the mac equivalent
This is why I love this channel. It's mostly hour-long documentaries, and then every now and then, you'll just post some weird 2-5 minute long video about something random just because you want to
@Frigo Pie funny thing is i found this video in my recommended so i don't think it broke his algorithm lol
@Frigo Pie who gives a fuck, he certainly doesn't, and I love it
@Frigo Pie I found this content to be extremely useful
@Frigo Pie hasn't ruined shit lmao
@Frigo Pie just remember bro, we're floating on a rock in space, try to enjoy the mac tutorial
and here I am, at 1:41 AM on a Monday, watching how to crop videos on a Mac while using a windows laptop. My life's finally peaked.
i thought he got hacked
It's past midnight here, I'm in bed, on an android phone, I'm not a video editor, and I hate apple products. Do I know why I clicked on this video, a video that literally could not be more irrelevant to me? No. No I do not
peak life
this is so stupidly simple, I've looked through so many sites. thanks for the video!!!!
Bro, the videos I saw explaining how to crop half the video off and rotate it in iMovie... I was like bruh. Thanks dude. Lolol
Still works in 2024! Holy cow thank you so much for this! I was actually trying to do the cropping through iMovie but it didn't want to only cut off the sides, but completely change the location of the center, so it wouldn't work. This is a life changer (for me at least)!

Hours. Days. Frustration. Drinking. Calling everyone I know. Screaming. Telling my business mentor that all the stuff they're recommending is not working and why does no one listen to me when I tell them their shit doesn't work because of the age of my mac (which was 12K 10 years ago). Now you show me this? You're brilliant. Thank you for doing this. I'm serious when I tell you this saved my sanity and calmed me right down like valium. Internet angel. Thanks.
DUDE! Thank you so much for this, this is stupidly simple and I doubt I would have figured it out without your video! Subscribed.
Thanks for this! Saved me TONS of work!!! :)
THANK YOU! Opening up iMovie was a pain.
Gosh - this is so simple but it's saved me so much time going between my Mac and phone. Thank you!
I scoured every corner of the interwebs for way too long before finding this video. Thank you, dude!
That was like pressing the easy button! God bless you!!! I love it! So easy! Thank you!!!!!!
Wow…I didn’t even know you can crop videos on iPhone and iPad with the edit button on photo…now I know you can do it with all of them..thank you!❤
The fact that I can't tell if this is a shitpost or not amazes me. I mean, look at the description.
THANK YOU for this video - and for being short, sweet, and to the point! It came up in a Google search and was exactly what I was looking for.

OMG thank you!!! I was going crazy because a 1GB video had been uploaded to cloud and so it wouldn't allow me to download back to my phone where I could easily crop. On my computer iMovie and quicktime didn't have the option to free crop. THANK YOU for alleviating massive frustration 😅
Thanks!!!

THANK YOU so much!! I can't believe I didn't think of this but even more so I can't believe 90% of what's on google about how to do this are these crazy complicated methods when this is literally right there.
40 secs of your video and my mystery was solved. Thanx Nick!
Damn, thank you. Assumed there must be an easy way of doing this forever but never came across it. Thank you for the short succinct video.

Jeez... you're absolutely right about googling to death before finding basic solutions. This worked perfectly for cropping videos for my Etsy shop. Thanks a ton!
Thanks for the tip!
Hey Nick, thanks for the tutorial! Your contribution in making such tutorial will make documentation way easier than ever before 👍
Thank you nick. I don't use mac so this info was useless to me, but it's still really nice to see your content!!!
Amazing you're a life saver.
My windows laptop recently broke down so I am forced to use my work Mac. The windows one had premiere on it but now I got nothing.
This video couldn't have come at a better time thanks man
How do you save it? Once crop it and try to drag it into iMovie it reverts to the old one?
iMovie actually changes everything back to standard size-- you literally can't do vertical video or any other size.
By default, in the Apple Photos app, edits you make to pictures and videos are not actually saved to the media itself, but appended onto the file as a modification. The original video remains in case you later want to revert the changes, and the Photos app knows to apply those appended modifications when reviewing the media.
When opening this file in other programs, they will usually not interpret the Apple Photos-specific edit metadata and will simply play the media file as it is encoded. When editing files, if you want them to overwrite the original data with the modified data so the video is re-encoded with your modifications, select "Save as Copy" or similar.
never owned a mac in my life
i rate this video 10/10
Great solution to crop a video, my problem is that iMovie will still show the uncropped version, and I do not find a way around that, any ideas anyone?
iMovie changes everything to the standard size, like even if you import a vertical video, it just adds black bars on the sides. I don't think there's any way to fix it except just cropping the video after you export from iMovie. If you find out different please let me know though, haha
You are awesome mate
I guess a lot of people has already told you this, but, thank you, youre a genious!
Nick! Thank you!
Thanks!!!!!
Love it bro! Exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you so much! I was trying to do this in iMovie with a vertical video and yeah, it end up adding black bars to the sides of the video. Thanks again!!
i cant believe i actually needed this video.
I love how your content is just sharing random information & investigating stuff for the people of the internet. You are such a gem Nick ❤

Thank you immensely! You're right, for some bizarre reason this solution is INVISIBLE on the Internet. You'd think that such an easy solution would be universally known... but... hmmm! Again thank you.
I don't own a Mac, I didn't see this video in my sub feed until after the video about the hypnotic table (endslates work??), and yet I'm still fascinated to see this is a feature
