- In addition to OEM ball joints, I bought some genuine Toyota inner tie rods. Keep an eye out for a detailed explanation of how aftermarket hardware is inferior to the original equipment manufactured by Toyota.

I can't do the alignment myself. I purchased a lifetime alignment from Firestone a year ago so I took it there to get done properly. As I said in the video, the method I used here was only used to get the truck to the alignment shop.
I replaced the Moog tie rods with OEM Toyota tie rods. The Moog ones had no play in them, but the boots were torn. The boots actually tore quite shortly after install. If yours have a good quality rubber boot on them, I doubt you'll have any issues. Just check them every few months, it's a good idea on any vehicle with any suspesion parts. In a few years if you have any issues, consider buying OEM parts if you can afford it. If you can't, the cheap set will still work just fine.
Mad video bro. I just ordered rear adjustable panard rod and both new tie rods. Going get wheel alinement to line up track and tow and camber.
Bloody great video mate.. Doing my on Friday, best video I have seen on tie rods..
Dash forward they are identical. Suspension and frame are also identical for the most part.
I'm sure you've been told by now in the comments but you can tie a string to your rear bumper and use a string to line up your tires
Get yourself a Zebralight H602W, the absolute best for working on your truck. It's my most used tool.
Nice vid, steady camera, easy wording. I'm currently stuck getting the two rods apart but do have a bench vise and think that's a great idea.
Btw, was that a red hatch in the garage?! I have a 94 runner and a 91 Civic Si hatch : )
90 Civic SI hatch. It's my dad's.
What is the specs to tighten the castle nuts and is it necessary to jack up the vehicle or can it be done on the ground?
Are you replacing the tie-rod ends that you replaced in the Ball Joint videos? You said the ball joints were cheap so you re-replaced them a few months later. I'm worried here because I just bought a NON-OEM ball joint/tie rod set and I'm in the middle of swapping them in.
A bit off topic, but Is there any real difference beteen the 4runner and the Hilux? (except for the bed in the Lux, of course.)
After you reconnected the tie rod ends and straightened the wheel, the tires were not straight. I missed how you adjusted the tires with the eyeball method. Did you loosen something and then tighten it back up after eyeballing the tires straight? I have a straight front axle but I assume the process will be similar?
Lower the truck onto the floor and center the steering wheel. Then adjust the tie rod between the steering box and the knuckle until the wheel is parallel with the rear wheel. Then adjust the tie rod between both knuckles until the other front wheel is parallel with the rear on the other side. Keep in mind this will still be grossly out of spec, it will only get you to the alignment shop.
where did you buy this?
Do you have a tool list?
Alex, how do you adjust the tie rods on the truck? If I loosen the sleeves...how can i spin either side? Is it possible?
Take a few measurements as the new ends are not always the same lengths. Then put the two ends and sleeve together, bolts hand tight and install them. Tighten the inner rod castle nut, cotter pin, and inner sleeve bolt and nut. Then spin the outer rod in whichever direction you need in order to get the alignment close. A string all the way around all 4 tires will give you lines of sight.
good stuff
GOOD JOB
.
