Let's leave all comments about subs or dubs here so the rest of the comment section doesn't get toxic. I thought both Sub and Dub were good, which is getting rarer nowadays which is why I wanted to showcase the dub.
honestly when Uraraka fought Bakugou, I started out "We know where this is going", then goes to " No, don't tell me" when she figured out a strategy, and teared up when Bakugou just rips all of that work as simply as that. It was an emotional roller coaster it didn't say Bakugou is that more powerful than Uraraka, it tells a story of how Bakugou never underestimate his opponents and how people with even the simpler quirks can win against really strong ones if their opponent let their guard down even abit. Ngl, it was the first time I realized : it's not the ending that matters, it's the journey. Because those end up telling more about the story
Just imagine if it was actually a thing in highschool. We take children, put them in an arena and make them fight in a tournament of one or one fist fights, until they're is only one winner.
It makes sense here, they are meant to show off their abilities while competing with each other, the only reason they can go so far with the fights is because they have an amazing nurse in the school, but even then, if they go too far, like in Deku vs Todoroki, they will stop them
Yeah, and it worked out so well that none of them had any sort sequelae, like a crippled hand or sth XD. Joking aside, it's not because you get healed that you don't go through high level of pain. I agree that it make sense, (and that it was absolute badass from beginning to end), but it still seems a bit twisted to me...
To be fair, they are in UA to learn how to be a hero a profession requiring fighting. Image a boxing school having a boxing tournament, doesn't seem that strange now does it.
I liked how they subverted the fact that the Main character always wins and fights some epic showdown with their rival at the end, was expecting Deku to have to fight Bakugo at the end or something, instead the show punched me in the feels yet again.
I mean they make obvious multiple times that Deku isn't the strongest character in the slightest and almost any time he wins a fight, it's because someone helped him out
Yes Zuko, despite your scar you can learn from your rival who will become your closest friend along your journey and defeat the demons from your abusive father as you use your fire powers! Whoops wrong show.
Lol I thought I was the only one that noticed the connect: even down to the mother who has a mental breakdown due to said abusive father acquiring her as some kind of gift.
I liked the Tournament Arc because the lead protagonist doesn’t win, we learn more about Shoto’s abusive past and the brawls between quirks feel powerful like you feel the strength in a hit
@@Ch04_1 I saw a comment once that said "Midoriya won the emotional battle, Shoto the symbolic and Bakugo the physical." and yet we still don't know who's the best of them three at the end of the tournament. Deku actively harmed his chances of victory, and Todoroki just gave up against Bakugo.
For me all 3 of them combined make the main protagonist, coz each of them needs to learn from each other before they can even attempt at being NO1. Midoriya can teach them heart. Todoroki show them the business. Katuski can teach them the drive. To success they will all need heart, drive and understanding of the hero business.
A good video, but I think you missed one critical element as too why MHA's Tournament arc works so damn well, and its the Soundtrack, its expertly woven into the scenes to get that feeling of hype going, it starts swelling at just the right moments to get the blood pumping, and get you into the moment.
THANK YOU! its the soundtrack of BnHA that makes the battles so good and the emotions flow like a river. the music gaves me chills so many times, thats what really is unique to that anime. and i think its one of the reasons its so good.
I can't remember where I heard this but I remember someone mentioning that it was not the music that was expertly woven into the scene but the opposite. The scene was made to fit the sound track, as you can actually hear the entire track from start to finish with no cuts. This is most notable during the fight of all might vs noumu and midoriya vs todoroki. Even after that fact, the whole thing just as impressive.
Biggest upset in tournament history. All the good characters were taken out in the prelims, and I mean, they TRIED to make the final showdown tense, but in the end it just pulls this bullshit twist that comes out of NOWHERE and made a the majority of fans PIIIIIISSED. Really poor form from the Election Arc in my opinion.
The reason I loved this tournament is because it was actually completed and the protagonist didn’t win. Deku has the power to win but he couldn’t control it to the Magnitude of Todoroki ans others.
Deku could have won but he wanted to save Todoroki from himself rather than win, he didn't care about victory, he wanted to save someone, which is the essence of a hero.
Rebellious Q Yes but remember that Todoroki has a limited amount of energy as well, and if Deku went on the offensive he could have won. Also Todoroki definitely would los against end of season 2 Deku since he can do 5% now.
Sunneyu I think its not so much that he was giving her a chance, but more like he really saw her as a serious opponent. He is the only one there who didn't underestimate her because he learned from seeing Deku that he can't take anyone for granted, and I just loved loooved looooved this subtle showcase of character development from him. It shows how well thought this arc was because even tho the main focus there was Uraraka, both of the characters grew and shined through without taking away the spotlight from each other 🙏
srsly, ochako is really the most realistic girl.... strong and determined, plus there is a different reason for her determination not led my testosterone
Going into it I was scared as hell to see best girl uraraka going in against the most ferocious fighter in the show, but during the fight I realized that there was no reason to worry because Uraraka is not there just to be a love interest and has her own strengths and motivations. It’s one of my favorite fights ever, because the characterization that goes into it is insane. We gain respect for both parties and a deeper understanding of a formerly somewhat superficial character. Hands down one of my favorite fights of the year (though it doesn’t come close to Deku vs Todoroki)
For the people saying that the fights in this Tournament Arc are too short, I would point you to pretty much every other fight before them. Looking at the hype fight between All Might and Nomu, if you break it down to the actual fighting then that is roughly 5 minutes at a stretch. This series just doesn't have very long fights, it's not like Dragonball Z or Naruto was with long drawn out battles and tons of dialogue; My Hero Academia quite obviously has more of a style that leans towards the short and explosive/entertaining battles. When you look at the format at the tournament (the rules of the 1v1) and the source of power for the different characters (their Quirks), plus the fights that have come before them, it really shouldn't be surprising you that they would be short bursts of action.
It’s not that they are so short but there is no build up to most of them: they are just hastily slapped back to back. Also there is a a lot of bulshit like how Deku got saved by an asspull, the attacks have no power to them. Deku hit Todoroki with a “smash” and he somehow survived? Or how doesn’t anybody get burnt by Bakugo’s flames. Do characters have super human armor or recover faster? Some of the drama bits were well done though, Todoroki and Uraraka in particular. Dark Tournament >>> MHA Tournament
Josh Joestar the matches that were slapped together because the characters in them haven't been developed and they have limited episodes so they were just meant to be fun things. Also were you not watching the show? Deku hit todiroki with 5%.
Ah, this was a good reminder of the hard work vs. natural talent fight that was Rock Lee vs. Garaa back in the original Naruto. God, so much of that fight was just incredible.
@Torika Gomutsutchi There is. I mean gaara had shukaku and his mother protecting him and gaara was a gr8 shinobi. As for Lee the only thing he had was hard work. He couldn't do anything. Things would've been lot easier for Lee if gaara didn't have his mother's protection. But gaara would still win.
@Torika Gomutsutchi What r u talking about? I never said I liked gaara heck I like Lee more than gaara. It's true his story is sad but remember if his story wasn't sad then he wouldn't have been what he was when fighting Lee. He would've been more like Naruto.
@Torika Gomutsutchi Bro try to understand. Both Gaara and Naruto are Jinchurikiis. Their childhood had basically been torture. They were shunned from everyone. Naruto later had Iruka supporting him but for Gaara the person who took care of him and really cared for him, his Uncle , was forced to kill him by his own father. Basically both Jinchurikiis had a sad life while its true that Lee also had a tough life but that was not that tough compared to Gaara and Naruto.
How to do a Togashi-style tournament arc: Don't finish the tournament at all because your back hurts and you want to go on another hiatus If possible, have the protagonist pass out halfway through and wake up long after it's finished to get the ending expositioned at him by a tertiary character
+NewKingBrandon it's as Bakugo himself said, it's a hollow victory for him because Todoroki held back on using his fire quirk and therefore did not give it his all to strive for victory. It's like winning by default when you worked your goddamn ass off to achieve the means to win.
I like how it wasn’t pointless. A lot of tournament arcs are never brought up again, but this one contained character growth AND tied in to later arcs.
Exactly what happened to me. Haven’t found an anime in years that I could watch more than 2-3 episodes of. In 2 days I made it through the first 35 episodes
Omg same. I haven't watched anime in yearrrrrs but I started on bnha since the manga was awesome... and it blew me away. It actually reminded me just how much a good anime will enhance a series. So happy with this. Can't wait for the rest of the season!
To be fair, him and All Might get called out on their shit instead of...say, it being okay that Ash keeps losing every fucking tournament he's ever been in and gets a pat on the back.
People tend to forget that there is also another difference between MHA and other shows. The U.A. sports festival is annual meaning MHA is going to have 3 tournament arcs. Who knows how the next 2 will turn out considering how strong they've already become in the manga. EDIT: Yes, I know you're a manga reader. I am as well. And yes, I know this comment has aged like milk...
@@gamerprince-tl5hg that would probably be repetitive and boring quick they already went through lots of things in their first year they should just skip to the final year but thats my opinion
@@rlamas4783 Repetitive tournaments can work if done well. Hell, New Japan Pro Wrestling (technically not anime but still) does annual tournament arcs with the G1 Climax, and they never feel redundant or boring because even if a lot of the same characters come back, 1) They're not the same people they were last time because they've changed and evolved (and, in the case of longtime veterans, even possibly degraded) over the past year and 2) Certain matchups that didn't happen in a previous tournament can happen in a new one, so there's still the possibility for fresh action.
@@Sanguiluna well its a diffrent medium with actual people and not animation, anime tornaments in general are boring and get repetative(not actual real life fighting tournaments) they're basically a way to have multiple fights and imo are cannon filler to have till the author figures out what to do next, so basically for weeks/months you will get lots of fights that you either dont care about or are boring until they finally get around to the main fight of the tournament
@@rlamas4783 "(not actual real life fighting tournaments)" Well neither is NJPW. It's fake fights between fake characters. If the viewer doesn't care about a tournament arc's fights, that's the fault of the writer for not making the characters engaging enough for the audience to get invested in, not the fault of the tournament itself.
My hero academia is the best generic shonen anime there is atm. Everything is basic and pretty simple. Characters motivations and goals, main theme, quirks and so on is stuff we've all seen times and times again. I love that the main character is the most generic naive do-gooder of them all with literally the most generic power there is (raw physical strength). Yet because of the simplicity of it all and the way different points of view and ideas clash organically it feels so damn relatable. You cannot possibly watch this anime and feel unsatisfied at the end of every episode even if you know full well from the start (saving some minor plot twists) what is going to happen.
your english is too english for me so i don't really get what you're saying but yeah it's a AAA production, polishing is what they excel in they probably have 7 or 8 guys looking over the anime frame by frame. also the music is so damn good it has power but the minor chords make it somewhat melancholic and adds depth. it's a running joke that You Say Run can go with everything but that's because it overlapses many themes. I am honestly in love with the buildup music. the fast guitar arpeggio superimposing over the rhymic staccato really draws me in. it's extremely well made and i have the quirk of judging animes by their OP (if the song is boring so will be the anime because it's the same editor looking over both most of the time) so this just adds on my fondness for this anime. ok i wrote another chapter of my book ahahah
What I really love about the tournament arc is that Deku didn't win the whole thing because in most arcs like this you don't need to watch the whole thing because you already know who will win. :D
@@badbeardbill9956 fully agree. I loved the original DB Series because of the Tenkaichi tournament and Tenshinhan (Tein) was my favorite rival for goku.
Gigguk, you have honestly gotta be my favorite anime UA-camr, as your filled to the brim with an optimism and enthusiasm that sets you apart from cynical channels like Digibro or Mothers Basement, who's behavior at times would make you think they hate anime. You're pretty much the closest thing to a human version of a shonen anime.
MHA just does everything on an emotional level pretty well. Like going into each conflict I can feel all of the emotions in it, from this tournament arc, to season 1 in the USJ, or even in season 3 with All for One, they capture emotions brilliantly and it makes me love the anime even more
The 30th ep was hella fascinating , with the hero killer the studio absolutely nailed the insanity of the manga art at those certain moments Waiting for a video about him
I honestly loved the tournament arc for Hero Academia so much, I got to meet new characters, more backstory it stayed true to Midoriya's character (which some arcs just don't do and the main character just becomes all about winning) and they did it all within about 7 episodes AND HAD A WINNER. Excellent explanation Gigguk!! :D
I only started yesterday watching the 2nd season and im still breathless for how EXCITING it is!!! Everything was PERFECT, GODLIKE, GINORMOUSLY wonderful!!! Every punch made me TREMBLE and the best thing is that it's not only fighting, it's STRATEGIES and EMOTIONS!!! I reached true ORGASM watching this!!!
I agree that it does sometimes get annoying when some big threat throws a wrench in a tournament. Which is why it was a refreshing surprise that the Sports Festival Story ended the way it did. I was wondering, all arc, when a villain or group was gonna interrupt the event, but never happened. The tournament went through to the very end and a winner was actually decided.
Izuku vs Todoroki kinda reminds me of Shikamaru vs Temari where the main guy can lose (on paper) but still WIN in a way that's true to their character.
There are few good moments in Naruto, but Shikamaru vs Temari, Kakashi vs Obito and the final Naruto vs Sasuke were all amazing. God damn if Naruto pulled off fights that clever more consistently it'd be one of the best series.
My brother has been telling me to watch season 2 for months and today I finally decided to do it. And I'm im love, seriously the show is fucking fantastic. Also Todoroki is bae.
Manga is actually way worse than anime - in anime if you got loads of conversations you hear them. But in this manga it covers 70% of the screen there really is barely anything left for the images. Might as well read book. And I mean this solely in context of Hero Academia not anima/manga in general
Books are 100% text and are enjoyable because they are fit for the format. Mange on the other hand is composition of both text and pictures. But as is in MHA manga there is hardly any images left
Honestly, did My Hero Academia have an unique theme? No. Was the character unique? No. Was the story unique? No. But one thing for sure, it did everything better than anyone else, that's what makes this show good.
Absolutely. It's what he says multiple times in the video, it plays perfectly to the tropes of shonen manga. Not super innovative, but not poorly executed to the point where people laud it off as just a generic battle anime. Good fucking shit, BNHA.
It's impossible to create a unique character nowadays. You'll be always copying another character, whether it is intentional or coincidental. You can always compare a character with another character from a different franchise.
Not only is he the only one who can do it, he's the only one who can do it well! He never repeats his points mindlessly, he always stays on topic, and he always divulges the topic fully; including deep and subliminal points and not just obvious shallow remarks.
Because Gigguk actually gives a fuck about the emotional impact of his videos and not just rambling on for no good reason. He blends visuals, music and voice together. The Jojo one gave me chills.
God I know calling it Boku no Hero Academia is the proper name but I shudder every time because of Boku no Pico and I know I am not the only one. *Hears Boku no Pico OP start*
bad lettuce I'm creating a manga, and currently seeing how well BNHA is doing, or comparing my manga to other works it gets kinda depressing you kinda feel like you're not good enough, however on the other hand BNHA gets me so hype to turn my dream into a reality
KInda, except for the fact the plot of Tournament Arcs is the Tournament itself. After a certain point Steel Ball Run kinds stops focusing on the Race, and on the actual goal of the Race(which is a secret plot of the POTUS' to find Jesus). Basically, the race becomes less important for the actual plot.
Which was the point. That's the joke. It's happening while elsewhere, the other characters are actually fighting the villians, and Saitama's caught up in a bog-standard martial arts tournament (though it has some pretty hype fights itself)
The manga (not the webcomic) has just finished a fighting tournament arc that ONE wanted to do but had already moved past when he came up with it. It's a bit trite, but the core stakes for Saitama are well established, and it's intercut with other intriguing stuff happening around the city (monsters).
I am a HUGE fan of MHA and having this explained to me is great! It just shows how great MHA is in engrossing its readers into this beautiful tale. I myself am writing a book and these tips are BOMB! Thank you Gigguk!
Wow, I'm positively surprised and pleased. Boku No Hero Academia's dub doesn't sound bad at all. Maybe I should try watching it. With animes I usually prefer the original Japanese versions because in them the makers (most of the time) really invest in the voice acting and it's (usually) high-quality and tolerable. In dubs I've noticed it isn't so nearly as often. But I appreciate a good dub and I don't dismiss a dub just because it's a dub. If an anime has poor voice acting but the dub of it doesn't obviously I watch the dub because they did better work with it. So if people here insult My Hero Academia's dub just because it's a dub they should stop and listen. Deku's voice actor is good and so are the other characters' and I can really respect that. Can you?
Actually i cannot stand this dub for the sole reason that everytime Deku opens his mouth, I see an angel flying through the skies shooting giant floaty eyeballs while getting dissed by every other character ever
My Hero Academia is one of my favorite shows. It’s so good. I’ve enjoyed literally every story arc. I love the characters, the music, the build up for all the epic moments. It’s gotta be a top anime out there right now.
Damn Gigguk, mad props on your editing of the music. As usual the content of the video itself was amazing, but the timing of the background music, namely at 10:50 when you choose to start up "You Can Be A Hero" was truly great.
yeah good point. Stain doesn't seem to be a completely terrible person, well he is, but he has some complexity to him as well. and Endeavor is 2nd top hero but at the same time a terrible father
Even though I suppose I'm not far enough into the full story to say for sure (since the anime is far behind the manga, as it should be), it seems to be a Deconstruction-Reconstruction of the idea of Superheroes, similar to the incredibles in that regard, now that I think about it: "And if everyone is super... no one is" So Acedamia tries to put that theory to the test, in a sense. And while it points out the flaws in the system, in the end, it also brings us back to the original idea of a hero.
owl Stain is a completely terrible person, but his ideology, though twisted, was proven to work, because the areas he had hit actually had a drop in the crime rate in them, so he has evidence that his way works. It's in this way that whether a simple character or not, he escapes the idea of a typical villain.
Gigguk's "My Hero Academia - How to do a Tournament Arc" video but every time he says tournament arc its replaced with him yelling TOOOOOURNAAAAAMEEEENT AAARRRCCCC
Wow. That...was a lot more touching and emotional than I was expecting. You've really got a way with words, there, mate. Seriously, something about the script, score, and visuals of this had me in tears; certainly not something I was expecting from a tournament arc commentary video, of all things. Props to you as a producer.
People who think this tournament arc was dragged out either don't remember or weren't around for shonen anime from the 90s. Hell, even Naruto's tournaments lasted for fucking ever.
Nothing beats the Dark Tournament from YYH. It was long as he'll, even the characters actively point out how long it was, but it was so good!!!! I love how condensed and short anime has become in recent years but I could rewatch yyh a hundred times and not regret it.
I love the dub of my hero academia. I usually use subs but my hero academia is a diffrent case. Its such a good show that to me, dubs or subs dosent matter to me
Thank you for being unbiased! For me, I alternate between what shows I watch dubbed and subbed. If it’s an anime that has a good reputation for its dub, then I watch it. However, if there’s one where the voices just annoy me, then I watch subbed. I usually go for dub most of the time, just to see if I want to stick with it, but for the most part I am fine with either
I am watching it both ways. The only thing that every truly bothers me with dubbed anime is when they don’t keep the subtext translation that are necessary when it’s dubbed. Like Deku’s here Notebook for example. When it appears on screen in the sub it has translations, but in the dubbed the just show the book and we can’t read what is says (I mean unless you’re bilingual). I just would maybe like an option for like [Translations] and then a separate option for [Closed Caption with translations] for those who need closed captions because maybe their hearing isn’t that great and sometimes they miss stuff that’s said.
I like Deku's sub better than dub simply because he sounds meeker and it brings more substance to his whole underdog character. Although the dub is very good too.
I personally watch dub because of Allmight. I just dont feel like his japanese version is heroic enough when he uses his power and not everydaydude enough when he doesnt.
I've always tended to go "oh no" when I know a tournament arc is coming, aside from a few key match ups. I finally watch Hero Academia's tournament arc and binged the whole thing. It really is a joy to watch, not just another trope crossed off the checklist
B Smith It was the struggle of a character who's only talent was using physical attacks against a prodigy with his ninjutsu. I think someone else can explain it better but that is the Cliff Notes version.
Because he's at least open minded and is more willing to give unbiased judgement, unlike others in the anime community obsessing over everything Japanese without knowing a lick of it.
Well, if you read the manga you find out otherwise(For the most part anyway). Most of Class B is still relevant and Shinso is seen again (though we're still not sure if he was bumped up to the hero course), and Hatsume is given even more plot significance later.
MHA is the ONLY shonen that makes me cry tears of emotion brought on from such strong resolution in characters. When I read the manga during the All Might V All for One fight, I listened to "Sign" by FLOW my tears were flowing; this was the 2nd time I read it too. This song always makes me invision the sorrow of watching Jiryah fight to his death; now I see an almost dead All Might and all the people that believe in him.
I did too! I feel people shit on duds a little to much before even really trying them… I'm not saying there are some shitty ones but not all of them are A grade shit either
I think dubs are getting better for Anime, but there were alot of really awful sounding dubs I've heard so far. Even in Germany, which has one of the best and biggest synchronization industries (because every single movie and tv show is getting dubbed here), had really shitty dubs. One of the best examples: Naruto. Even though it's insanely popular all around the world and so in Germany, its dub is horrendous compared to the quality you'd normally get to hear for tv shows and movies.
That's what I said, didn't I? Yeah, it's actually kinda sad how bad german anime dubs are when Germany generally is the country with the highest quality dubs for almost every other department of film and tv.
knowing about anime doesn't mean you can make a good one. That's why people dreaming to be writers/comic artists often decide to become editors: they are good at recognising good works, but can't make them. On the contrary, a pro writer or mangaka is most likely able to be a good editor as well.
Ace Different groups fighting to be the one to organize a tournament. Money, reputation, and entire companies' existences on the line. Different philosophies on brackets, advertising, and staging..... Crap, I've hyped myself up.
After this video I decided to watch this anime. And... after watching I was happy. I thought that it is just superhero parody like "Onepunchman". I wasn't right. It is very emotional anime with cool characters and without stereotyped plot (almost). And like Gigguk I love tourament arc. Fight for dreams and ideals of characters on tournament, definitely worth to spend you time to this anime
Fyrma I dont think it sucked but thats your opinion. But I disagree about it not having a tournament arc. The whole retrieval and arrancar arc were tournament arc as the consisted in 90% of 1 v 1 matches.
Bleach sucked past the first arc. It didn't know where it was going, vampire arc was horrible, I agreed with the vampires more than I did the good guys, vampires weren't fleshed out enough, saving orohime arc was okay because it was one fight after the other, like a tournament, but character had no development past their one fight and would never be seen again so who cares. I gave up when the princess filler arc started, because I realized the show was wasting a tonne of time and kept you hooked by giving you a glimpse of an interesting character(ichigo's dad) and then ignoring them until way later.
Fyrma What would a tournament arc in Bleach even look like? I doubt the Soul Society, who is a major stick in the mud, would do a tournament to see who's the best Soul Reaper and I don't see them solving the living world's fate with the Arrancar over a tournament. Guess the Fake Karakura arc is the closest we got to a tournament arc with a battle royale type setting.
Kawaki You wrote the second "early to a video" joke I ever read that said something besides the generic "I'm early but I can't think of anything clever to say so I'll say something lame"
I feel a lot of anime are good the first time. After you see it again, you realized it’s not that great. MHA, however, despite knowing who wins, how they win, and what happens after, I was hyped through the entire thing. It felt as if I was watching it for the first time

Raging Raving Yeah I know such genius. Wow. The only other shows that did that was Dragon Ball and Naruto, such subversion wow
Yeah good point, I was a dumbass when I wrote that
DL DD except you know. My hero academia is written well..
I mean they make obvious multiple times that Deku isn't the strongest character in the slightest and almost any time he wins a fight, it's because someone helped him out
@@JackTheripper911 Naruto is definitely better than MHA, the introduction of power scaling supports this. It's early on in MHA anyways
Yes Zuko, despite your scar you can learn from your rival who will become your closest friend along your journey and defeat the demons from your abusive father as you use your fire powers!
Whoops wrong show.
David rip
Lol I thought I was the only one that noticed the connect: even down to the mother who has a mental breakdown due to said abusive father acquiring her as some kind of gift.
HONOR
They both have scars on the same side of their face...
David Well Todoroki IS inspired by Zuko after all :P
I liked the Tournament Arc because the lead protagonist doesn’t win, we learn more about Shoto’s abusive past and the brawls between quirks feel powerful like you feel the strength in a hit
Lets not act like my hero is the only anime where the protagonist doesn’t win a tournament
Leoul Bisrat it’s not, but it’s still rare
Midoriya, bakugo and todoroki all won separate rounds though. Im satisfied enough with that.
Fieryone the soundtrack of MHA is absolutely Amazing
I FREAKIN LOVE BNHA’S SOUNDTRACK
THANK YOU!
its the soundtrack of BnHA that makes the battles so good and the emotions flow like a river.
the music gaves me chills so many times, thats what really is unique to that anime.
and i think its one of the reasons its so good.
Even after that fact, the whole thing just as impressive.
yeah when midoria and icy hot did that last punch and the epic hype music climaxed i ejaculated
Rock lee vs gara still shocks me to this day
"Fay" *da- haha I have no friends
Blaine Truth trash overrated fight
Nothing near as good as lee vs gaara in this trash show
Blaine Truth legend
Seriously one of the most iconic fights of all time.
The 2016 Presidential Election was my favorite tournament arc.
Nahh, it had one-sided characters and a bullshit Russia interruption that they still haven't resolved halfway through the next season.
Thats Not Gaming same my competition won he reminds me of Bakugo, and he Has bombs specifically the M.O.A.B
The greatest underdog story of our time
Too bad it was a competition between a poorly written anti-hero and a cartoonishly evil villain
Thats Not Gaming Both main characters were shit :/
The reason I loved this tournament is because it was actually completed and the protagonist didn’t win. Deku has the power to win but he couldn’t control it to the Magnitude of Todoroki ans others.
Phoenix Wolf there are alot where the main doesn't win but I get what you mean like he wasn't just the most important
Really glad it was completed too, allowed the viewers to see all the matches that were hyped up
Deku could have won but he wanted to save Todoroki from himself rather than win, he didn't care about victory, he wanted to save someone, which is the essence of a hero.
Nah, it was stalemate going nowhere fast and Deku can only break so many bones before he goes down to the ice of Shoto
Rebellious Q Yes but remember that Todoroki has a limited amount of energy as well, and if Deku went on the offensive he could have won. Also Todoroki definitely would los against end of season 2 Deku since he can do 5% now.
I've never cried during a tournament arch until My Hero Academia. Uraraka is the coolest and most relatable girl in recent shonen anime.
What about her was frail?
I agree, I absolutely love her. I really hope MHA won't go the Naruto way and forget about secondary characters. Latest arc in manga was so so bad.
10:49
Todoroki's smile through teary eyes gives me goosebumps.
That scene killed me
I loved that scene, felt really realistic
For the people saying that the fights in this Tournament Arc are too short, I would point you to pretty much every other fight before them. Looking at the hype fight between All Might and Nomu, if you break it down to the actual fighting then that is roughly 5 minutes at a stretch. This series just doesn't have very long fights, it's not like Dragonball Z or Naruto was with long drawn out battles and tons of dialogue; My Hero Academia quite obviously has more of a style that leans towards the short and explosive/entertaining battles. When you look at the format at the tournament (the rules of the 1v1) and the source of power for the different characters (their Quirks), plus the fights that have come before them, it really shouldn't be surprising you that they would be short bursts of action.
its weird that people didnt like short fights in bnha but love it in opm.
Josh Joestar But Bakugo'd quirk is explosion
Lyenell Smith What is your point? Do explosions not have flames?
Josh Joestar the matches that were slapped together because the characters in them haven't been developed and they have limited episodes so they were just meant to be fun things. Also were you not watching the show? Deku hit todiroki with 5%.
Ah, this was a good reminder of the hard work vs. natural talent fight that was Rock Lee vs. Garaa back in the original Naruto. God, so much of that fight was just incredible.
Nesano "Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard" Too bad Gaara had both 😕
@@JackTheripper911 there's a deeper meaning to why gaara won

How to do a tournament arc: Don't cockblock viewers by interrupting it and have no winner or a winner that didn't deserve to win.
How to do a Togashi-style tournament arc: Don't finish the tournament at all because your back hurts and you want to go on another hiatus
If possible, have the protagonist pass out halfway through and wake up long after it's finished to get the ending expositioned at him by a tertiary character
I don't think Bakugo deserved to win, but that's what made it feel like a cruel nothing-award to him.
Helado "Here, let me stop kicking your ass so i can tell you my life story."
Jkla Alkj why not? Bakugo is a tactical genius, at least relative to the average student. He also used his quirk to his advantage in creative ways.
+NewKingBrandon it's as Bakugo himself said, it's a hollow victory for him because Todoroki held back on using his fire quirk and therefore did not give it his all to strive for victory. It's like winning by default when you worked your goddamn ass off to achieve the means to win.
I didn't expect the life lessons in my anime videos today. God damn, Gigguk, there you go again motivating my socks off.
I like how it wasn’t pointless. A lot of tournament arcs are never brought up again, but this one contained character growth AND tied in to later arcs.
I used to love watching anime, then I stopped.
My Hero Academia is the reason why I love Anime again.
Glad to have you back on board
Exactly what happened to me. Haven’t found an anime in years that I could watch more than 2-3 episodes of. In 2 days I made it through the first 35 episodes
Same exact thing happened to me
Omg same. I haven't watched anime in yearrrrrs but I started on bnha since the manga was awesome... and it blew me away. It actually reminded me just how much a good anime will enhance a series. So happy with this. Can't wait for the rest of the season!
One Punch Man got me hooked back in. Then MHA made me actively seek new animes
I don't think anyone would blame this guy for watching the dub, it's top notch.
Caelan Curry you'd be surprised by the people who are salty that they'd even dare dub stuff
Caelan Curry a select few will enjoy the taste of a dub masterpiece

Midoriya: Don't worry All Might. I got this
(5 episodes later)
Midoriya is out of bounds
Zuku Rinato and unconscious. And broken all over. And basically dead
Zuku Rinato sigh...
Levi Van Dyne 😂
Not shown till later was Recovery girl watching and being like "Getting real sick of your shit All Might. Making me heal this kid over and over."
Is MHA really going to do all of Class 1-A's years of high school? That'd be really cool. I want this series to last forever
BNHA is not super original, but it´s not generic either
it is generic. literally every shounen its like this. not saying its bad. but that's all there is.
If anything, after one episode ends, you'll be screaming for more
All the troupes are just polished to a freaking T
your english is too english for me so i don't really get what you're saying but yeah it's a AAA production, polishing is what they excel in they probably have 7 or 8 guys looking over the anime frame by frame. also the music is so damn good it has power but the minor chords make it somewhat melancholic and adds depth. it's a running joke that You Say Run can go with everything but that's because it overlapses many themes.
A lot of tournament arc just don't have a winner lol
Dragonball’s second tournament arc is pretty awesome. I think that’s where Tien is introduced.
@@badbeardbill9956 fully agree. I loved the original DB Series because of the Tenkaichi tournament and Tenshinhan (Tein) was my favorite rival for goku.

MHA just does everything on an emotional level pretty well. Like going into each conflict I can feel all of the emotions in it, from this tournament arc, to season 1 in the USJ, or even in season 3 with All for One, they capture emotions brilliantly and it makes me love the anime even more
The 30th ep was hella fascinating , with the hero killer the studio absolutely nailed the insanity of the manga art at those certain moments
Waiting for a video about him
I honestly loved the tournament arc for Hero Academia so much, I got to meet new characters, more backstory it stayed true to Midoriya's character (which some arcs just don't do and the main character just becomes all about winning) and they did it all within about 7 episodes AND HAD A WINNER. Excellent explanation Gigguk!! :D
I only started yesterday watching the 2nd season and im still breathless for how EXCITING it is!!! Everything was PERFECT, GODLIKE, GINORMOUSLY wonderful!!! Your description of Todoroki vs. Deku made me want to cry all over again...
Brandon Adrien
Truth! 👏👏👏
Shikamaru vs Temari is easily top 3 best moments in Naruto. A moment that makes a character an insta-favourite.
Brandon Adrien amen brother
Shikamaru vs Temari is my favorite fight in the entire Naruto series.
Pick up the manga, you will be surprise.

The show is a love letter to comic books and shounen manga.
Scrubbles : ゼロ wtf the theme is lit af
Firepopcorn 123 oh I didn't mean the OP/ED theme haha I meant the theme of the story. I FUCKING love both season's OPs
It's impossible to create a unique character nowadays. You'll be always copying another character, whether it is intentional or coincidental. You can always compare a character with another character from a different franchise.
Only Gigguk can make an 14:00 minute video only about a fucking tournament arc! lmao

How to do a tournament arc: "Do you know Dragon Ball Super tournament arc?"
"Yes."
"Nothing like that."
It's a battle royal.Go watch the OG DB if you want the best tournament.
Or: "You know how JoJo has no Tournament Arcs?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm not doing a Tournament Arc."
sounds legit.
Malcom Alexander isn't Steel Ball Run basically a massive tournament arc?
KInda, except for the fact the plot of Tournament Arcs is the Tournament itself. After a certain point Steel Ball Run kinds stops focusing on the Race, and on the actual goal of the Race(which is a secret plot of the POTUS' to find Jesus). Basically, the race becomes less important for the actual plot.
Shout out to One Punch Man's manga tournament arc, where nothing happened and nobody wanted it.
Which was the point. That's the joke.
It's happening while elsewhere, the other characters are actually fighting the villians, and Saitama's caught up in a bog-standard martial arts tournament (though it has some pretty hype fights itself)
Isn't the tournament the piece that the main creator let the artist write? Or did i hear that from somewhere sketchy
What tournament
There's a fine line between a good joke and an unfunny waste of time that spans a few months.

DEKU VS TODOROKI
DAM
ybtheking gotta love that animation. Especially with the impact frames drawn in as well. So cool!
Can you?
EMhisss nah idk why but I'm incapable of that
Kaneki Ken
You've hardwired your mind to be as obstinate as possible. It's too much brainpower for you to change your mind.
Actually i cannot stand this dub for the sole reason that everytime Deku opens his mouth, I see an angel flying through the skies shooting giant floaty eyeballs while getting dissed by every other character ever
The Dub is fantastic. Chris Sabat makes all might amazing
EMhisss you and I are gonna get along
I felt chills when you said "it's years of training, your ambitions"
My Hero Academia is one of my favorite shows. It’s so good. I’ve enjoyed literally every story arc. I love the characters, the music, the build up for all the epic moments. It’s gotta be a top anime out there right now.
Damn Gigguk, mad props on your editing of the music. As usual the content of the video itself was amazing, but the timing of the background music, namely at 10:50 when you choose to start up "You Can Be A Hero" was truly great.
"Simplistic view of heroes and villains" Looks at Stain and Endeavour....
Ms10000123 I think they're pretty simple
+Reborn Not the point at all? It is about how they fit the simplistic view, not their characters. Don't you understand that difference?
yeah good point. Stain doesn't seem to be a completely terrible person, well he is, but he has some complexity to him as well. and Endeavor is 2nd top hero but at the same time a terrible father
Even though I suppose I'm not far enough into the full story to say for sure (since the anime is far behind the manga, as it should be), it seems to be a Deconstruction-Reconstruction of the idea of Superheroes, similar to the incredibles in that regard, now that I think about it:
"And if everyone is super... no one is"
So Acedamia tries to put that theory to the test, in a sense. And while it points out the flaws in the system, in the end, it also brings us back to the original idea of a hero.
owl
Stain is a completely terrible person, but his ideology, though twisted, was proven to work, because the areas he had hit actually had a drop in the crime rate in them, so he has evidence that his way works.
It's in this way that whether a simple character or not, he escapes the idea of a typical villain.
Oh my god, those concluding lines synced up with the score and animation were pitch perfect.
I approached MHA's tournament arc with a groan...
Then I watched it.
and I fucking loved it.
Is this video about a TOURNAMENT ARCCCCCCC!?
No
Kono Dio da?
OH MY GODDDDD
It's about arc tournaments
666melodeath666 Is this SBR?
Gigguk's "My Hero Academia - How to do a Tournament Arc" video but every time he says tournament arc its replaced with him yelling TOOOOOURNAAAAAMEEEENT AAARRRCCCC
TheToasterWaffle this really needs to be made
Deku: It’s yours, your-!
Me: QUIRK! NOT HIS
You all can thank akira toriyama for that he pretty much set the blueprint for this type of arc (dragon ball 2nd arc).
theandroidsoldier000 true
Dragon ball Shit
9stanislav9 L
I agree, Hero academia's tournament was really exciting, but Dragon Ball was done the best imo and is where the idea began.
100%. For a video about tournament arcs, i would've enjoyed more DB shots (there were around 2?)
Gigguk: This leads me to the real reason academia does this arc so well. (Shows picture of girls in cheerleader outfits) me: couldn't agree more
4:29 gotta appreciate his voice crack
Hell, even Naruto's tournaments lasted for fucking ever.
none what do you mean even? Naruto's longwidedness is wellknown as one of it's mayor flaws
none the only thing that last longer then a naruto tournament arc is naruto jumping through canyons and searching for sasuke.
the fuck? the Chuniin exams were great. It was 47 episodes long and one the most memorable arcs of the series with countless great moments
Nothing beats the Dark Tournament from YYH. It was long as he'll, even the characters actively point out how long it was, but it was so good!!!! I love how condensed and short anime has become in recent years but I could rewatch yyh a hundred times and not regret it.
none Heck Chunin Exams was a fucking masterpiece
My Hero Academia is so fucking good.
I will comment COCK on alex videos I never said it was better.
Dominique Jackson The manga is better hmphh
Jenny Baxter Yes, you have it.
Dominique Jackson the anime is good but the mc is a fucking annoying cry baby
I will comment COCK on alex videos NARUTO BETTER???AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAGA, THAT ONE WAS GOOD!
I respect your opinion
I only watch the dub if it air along the sub (so i don't have to wait 2 weeks) and sub if its a head of dub
Nope sub still better sorry
One of the tournament arcs that made me have teary eyes.
You Say Run in the backround
I LOVE IT
I like Deku's sub better than dub simply because he sounds meeker and it brings more substance to his whole underdog character.
Although the dub is very good too.
Artan9000
Exactly what I was thinking, on both points.
Artan9000 Not true.
Artan9000 finally ur a person that gets it 😂😁
I personally watch dub because of Allmight. I just dont feel like his japanese version is heroic enough when he uses his power and not everydaydude enough when he doesnt.
Prime Tyrant people wacht it because is Vegeta
Was that a Jojo's reference... nope. TOURNAMENT ARC!!!
Jojo + Tournament Arc = $$$
Old Joseph: Oh.....My......Gaaawwwd
Joseph Vs wamuu is one of them
Everything is a Jojo’s reference
I've always tended to go "oh no" when I know a tournament arc is coming, aside from a few key match ups. I finally watch Hero Academia's tournament arc and binged the whole thing. It really is a joy to watch, not just another trope crossed off the checklist
Best tournament Arc fight in anime history - Garra vs Rock lee
Sagar -san I'm not even a naruto fan but ya
I watched this fight when i was 11 or something and i am still really salty that Lee didn't win.
natsu and gajeel vs sting and rouge?! LMAO
Sagar -san can someone explain to me again why this was so big? Naruto is a blur to me so I can't remember
B Smith It was the struggle of a character who's only talent was using physical attacks against a prodigy with his ninjutsu. I think someone else can explain it better but that is the Cliff Notes version.
You like the dub? I see you're a man of culture, Gigguk.
Because he's at least open minded and is more willing to give unbiased judgement, unlike others in the anime community obsessing over everything Japanese without knowing a lick of it.
this ^
Don't lie Gigguk. We all know the side characters are given to the shadow realm once the arc ends.
Well, if you read the manga you find out otherwise(For the most part anyway). Most of Class B is still relevant and Shinso is seen again (though we're still not sure if he was bumped up to the hero course), and Hatsume is given even more plot significance later.
he's still in the normal class but he got some training alright
My favorite line in a tournament arc,
Temari: What's a Couple of dropped weights gonna d- 😲
MHA is the ONLY shonen that makes me cry tears of emotion brought on from such strong resolution in characters. When I read the manga during the All Might V All for One fight, I listened to "Sign" by FLOW my tears were flowing; this was the 2nd time I read it too. This song always makes me invision the sorrow of watching Jiryah fight to his death; now I see an almost dead All Might and all the people that believe in him.
ARC TOURNAMENTTTTT
Tonioh98 CRAAAAAAAA TNEEEMAAANRUOOOT
I actually really like the My Hero Academia dub.
TanPro so do i!!!! 😀😀😀
TanPro me too.
Yeah, it's actually kinda sad how bad german anime dubs are when Germany generally is the country with the highest quality dubs for almost every other department of film and tv.
yay im glad you used the Dub for clips i love MHA's Dub
Gigguk should just make an anime already
Hanna Bäckström I agree.
I'd watch it. I'd watch the hell outta it
Hanna Bäckström seriously
knowing about anime doesn't mean you can make a good one. That's why people dreaming to be writers/comic artists often decide to become editors: they are good at recognising good works, but can't make them. On the contrary, a pro writer or mangaka is most likely able to be a good editor as well.
Honestly
"It's yours! Your quirk, not his!". *chills*
Chandler Ingram Justin Briner really nailed the delivery of that line.
Neoxon he absolutely did. He'll always be Deku to me now.
Simple : just add more Tournaments Arc .
an anime about people organizing tournaments arcs.
Henrique vilela and turn that into a tournament itself
Ace Different groups fighting to be the one to organize a tournament. Money, reputation, and entire companies' existences on the line. Different philosophies on brackets, advertising, and staging.....
Crap, I've hyped myself up.
Somebody get someone to make this a thing
and a tournament arc inside a tournament arc
Everyone: fighting with everything they've got to win...
Meanwhile todoroki: "Is Almight your dad?"
I think Shokugeki no Soma knows how to do a tournament arc too.
Jeremy Argha shokugeki no somas tournament arc was a lot more interesting
Agreed
After this video I decided to watch this anime. And... after watching I was happy. I thought that it is just superhero parody like "Onepunchman". I wasn't right. It is very emotional anime with cool characters and without stereotyped plot (almost). And like Gigguk I love tourament arc. Fight for dreams and ideals of characters on tournament, definitely worth to spend you time to this anime
*I WAS WATCHING TOURNAMENT ARCS BEFORE THEY WERE COOL*
Bullshit! Tournament arcs were NEVER NOT COOL!!
Hispanic Girls Twerking That's impressive, you have actually achieved the impossible. Tournament arcs were always amazing.
howlingarmadillo they arent in super..if u can even call that a tournament arc
You must have existed before the beginning of time, then!
Hello God!
You know, I'm honestly kind of disappointed that you don't have Hispanic girls twerking on your channel :/
as a literature student i am amazed by the way you break down a formula within tournament arcs and character's values.
Guys, I think we figured out why Bleach sucked.
Didn't have a Tournament arc.
Fyrma yes it did lol. Their entire anime series was a tournament arc
I like how the first reply took this comment serious. Like anyone would believe one arc would make Bleach good
That editing looks fresh!
When your early and you wanna watch the video while scrolling through comments but there's none
Know dat feel bro.
Kawaki You wrote the second "early to a video" joke I ever read that said something besides the generic "I'm early but I can't think of anything clever to say so I'll say something lame"
danielsjohnson ok
My hero academia's tournament arc is the only one thats given me chills
Damani Williams the chunin exams and the dark tournament did that for me
I feel a lot of anime are good the first time. After you see it again, you realized it’s not that great. MHA, however, despite knowing who wins, how they win, and what happens after, I was hyped through the entire thing. It felt as if I was watching it for the first time
@@sailorcandy6633 well to each our own I guess.... cause although mha does that for me too the garra vs lee fight just runs chills down my spine every time
*TOOOOOURNAAAMEEEENTTTTT AAAAAAAAAAAAAARC*
