The Hughes OH-6 Cayuse or "Loach" mod by Tobsen and Eightball is the most fun to fly helicopter we currently have in DCS. This mod is still at a very early stage. The tail rotor has a very slow response, the radio is super limited, the ADF only works with ME radio beacon units. And I don't know why they put two intercoms on the centre pedestal.
The A4-E-C is the most developed mod of all. But the OH-6A is definitely my favourite!
That's easy to answer. Why do you expect faster response to the tail rotor?
Radio is limited because it is not supported for mods by ED. Same for ADF. No Chance without SDK.
2 Intercoms because this is how the aircraft build.

Agreed! Fantastic mod! The flight model has been simultaneously the most challenging and most fun helicopter I've ever flown in DCS. Rotorhead-parkour'ing through Beirut and Aleppo have been some of my favorite things to do.

I just got DCS recently and I didn’t wanna swing on a helicopter yet and the trials are intimidating as I don’t really have enough time in two weeks to learn the module, but man as an intro to Helicopters in dcs this is perfection. Learning curve was tough but I’m taking off a lot better now. A lot of left pedal input is key! Thanks for the introduction!

For the ground effect, from my understanding of what my pilots have told me, ground effect changes based in rotor disk size/diameter. So with the super small diameter of the loach disk, you'll get a super low area of ground effect.

the diameter of the rotor influences the HEIGHT at witch the ground effect becomes felt, we ballpark half the rotor diameter. getting lower increases the effect

Something to keep in mind about the FM, it is based on the OH-6A which had the weaker engine. Comments about the collective not being as responsive, from what I have read in the history of the OH-6, was not as responsive in the 4 blade rotor head as it was in the 5 blade OH-6C model and later. Additionally the tail rotor was altered in later models as well.

Seems to me the hardest thing with the OH-6 is hovering. 80% of time I wind up in an uncontrolled roll and crash. I know IRL these are a little squirrely and responsive. fun though once I get some airspeed up. My landings suck but work in progress. I wonder if coders didn't overdo VRS.

lol a4 leaves this mod in the dust if we're talking bout the best mod ever (so far), oh6 is good but not on the same level as a4..
The external model and texturing on the A4 is not as good. This actually looks like it could be from Razbam. But obviously it’s a much simpler machine than the A4
DCS Huey struts/skis DO cushion on landing ;)
Not sure if they updated the flight model recently, but when I tried it last the yaw-axis dynamics of this heli were just no pleasant to deal with, which is why I prefer for example the OH-58 in that regard.
They updated that recently. I also hated the yaw before. It’s fine now!
We do need a vietnam map!

Speaking of Collective...what input device are you using for it? I only have a Warthog Throttle and wonder whether that will do the trick.
I use a virpil throttle for all my heli flying. no problems at all. I *almost* bought a dedicated collective but tbh my throttle has more buttons/axis available.

FYI the skidding issue is a DCS problem. Ground friction in DCS is very poor.
Sure but not anywhere near an issue in the Huey and that also has skids
@@CommandT I know but the Kiowa is really terrible, you need way too much back cyclic to stop from sliding forwards and even then it often does. It is an issue in DCS and seems to have a variable effect across platforms.
My wallet cries out every time a new video of yours drops and I start googling "Force Feedback bases" all over again as I look to add one to my collection and hope it gets here before my fiancé realizes what's happened and dumps my body in the woods.

we need some vibrations in the stick for helicopters with the FFBeast. really prevent me from flying helicopters right now having such a dead stick compared to the Rhino
Well according to real heli pilots there shouldn’t be any vibrations in the stick, unless something has gone critically wrong!

I messaged the developers on the ED forum, the problem with the skids is that they have almost zero friction with the ground. as soon as you pull any collective, it starts skidding sideways on any terrain. you can see how long it takes to stop when you do the run-on landing, unless you dump collective. I feel like the friction value changes too abruptly with the input of power, if that makes sense, as in if you add any small amount of collective, it starts skidding. I was trying to do a dynamic roll-over, almost impossible.
also there is no helicopter in the world with zero ground effect, there is no such thing.
is this the ver1.2 of the mod you are showing?
The OH-6A devs said they're working on friction of the skids currently
I didn’t say zero ground effect. I said the loach is had less than other helis in DCS. Tobi said 7%
And yeah regarding the skidding it’s an issue.

The ground effect felt fine to me. 7% of what? and what is the dependency of the effect vs height above the ground? bc in real helicopters it changes in a non-linear fashion, from max just above the ground, to almost nothing at 1/3 of the rotor diameter, to nominal 0 at or above 1/2 rotor diameter. but you should deffo have to push down on the collective to be able to touch down, the feeling is like the heli just doesn't want to land.
@@franciscgedeon9237 the rotor is mounted at a height of approx 2.5 meter and a half diameter is about 4 meters ;)
@@tobib2969 that's correct, to me it feels OK flying it in DCS in terms of ground effect, didn't notice any issues. I only said anything about the skid friction values. Don't get me wrong, I like the mod, I appreciate the immense amount of work you guys put into it, there is no 2 ways about it. The only criticism I bring is hopefully seen as trying to help somewhat from the perspective of someone who flies helis in real life. Else, just ignore me, I'll go away eventually lol.

No, that’s not the reason. You always have to transition through that region when lowering the collective after touch down. And as you can see the bounces happen not when my collective of fully down.
Best mod IMO is the Hercules. Man, you can drop 30 parachuters out of a plane YOU are flying.
id say the Gazelle hovers better, and the BO-105 certainly will, fixed rotor blades are great for hovering

If you're complaining about the amount of thrust and the chopper feeling light, then you're finding the wrong things to complain about. The OH-6 was and is a chopper that has a high thrust to weight ratio. It's partly why it was selected for it's role in Vietnam and why it's still in use today with US SF and other nations in the same capacity. It is a light chopper by nature which made it ideal for light attack and observation.

The A4 is by far the best mod. Has way more development than this.
Except the 3D model sucks by comparison I think

Love the Blackhawk but it needs some serious work too. Both of these are the main vehicles I use in DCS

when compared with real thing, the Mi8 has the most realistic flight model in DCS to this point. tested in sim used to certify Mi8 military pilots. DCS is factually a good trainer for that, and I don't mean systems only, but the actual flight model.

All helicopters from mods have an incorrect physical flight model. Can be used for training if you don’t know how to fly helicopters at all. But to control Huei or Mi 24, you will have to learn a lot and understand, in principle, what is difficult about flying helicopters in DCS. And these small helicopters from mods are controlled super simply and super unrealistically. Of these, the best is an old helicopter from Vietnam. It is at least somewhat difficult to fly.
I believe your statement is not very accurate regarding the OH-6 in many ways. I haven’t flown the real thing though so obviously can’t know for sure
