I've lost over $1.5 million to this disgusting addiction and I'm only 31 years old. I lost a house, my dream car and more. Currently on the path to loosing my 2nd house. This addiction is something people on the outside could never understand. Every day I find it easier to understand why some people choose suicide. The pain and shame is so overwhelming.

As someone who worked in the bookies for 10+ years. This what bookmakers do. They set up shops in the poorest and most deprived areas to keep people in the grip, you often see area managers and higher people telling staff to check on customers welfare not realise it’s only for the company’s legislation in the event of them getting sued hence the jobsworth like people who think they have a career in that industries. Our government will never intervene because of the TAX from the machines and over the counter bets. A nation suffers so a few small people can gain. Gambling is worse than taking crack cocaine, at least when you buy crack you get what you buy, gambling is uncertain and in the houses favour. Too many good men and women lose there life’s over gambling

As somebody who has lived through this, watching this video is heartbreaking. But reading the comments is even more heartbreaking. Over a 10 year span I gambled every penny I had. I thought I’d never be able to stop. It’s coming up 6 years since I last placed a bet. The road is tough, it’s long. But the end comes around quicker than you could ever imagine. Since stopping I’ve cleared my debt and gained a perfect credit rating, got engaged and married, bought a house and have a son. I’m not saying this to gloat, but to hopefully show even 1 person that YOU can do this too.

The thing is with the pokies and table games at casinos, is that nobody wants to walk out of there with anything less than they walked in with. And that a lot of the times results on continuous betting in an attempt to get positive. And that’s how people lose most of the time. And then the next time you come, you’ll get say $500 ahead. And then you’ll start to think about how last time you lost $1500. So now you have got to try and win another $1000. And than you’re back to neutral. And than now you’ll want to get ahead. Most of the time you will lose it all.

The worst thing that can happen is winning on that first day especially if it's a large amount; completely rewires your brain to think of it as an option and as if winning is easy when it isn’t. If you lose on your first session you just think “this is stupid why do people gamble” and never play again. If you win then you start the cycle. (I can win again) and you might but then eventually you won’t but since you’ve won before, you put in more. Nothing. You’re frustrated you start betting higher. You lost everything you’ve won before + some, now you need to win your money back so you keep going. You promise you'll stop if you get it back. You may get it back but what about those previous winnings you lost? You keep going, you lose, you just want your money back and you’ll quit you swear. You've gotten it back several times so it's possible. You nearly get it back. You keep going. You lose everything you have. You use your savings. You get a win but it’s not enough anymore. You have to bet higher. Nothing. Now you work extra hours, borrow money just to go back and get that win. You lose or get such small wins that it's frustrating and useless. You keep going. You lose. Now you need to pay everyone off so you go back. It’s hell.

With gambling the biggest thing to know is it's a losing game. The game is rigged against you. And while you might win sometimes it's a profitable business designed to extract your cash. Keep playing and losing is inevitable. You need to know when to quit. Dopamine is a hell of a drug, but you have to find ways to ignore it.
I would say find other things that give dopamine to distract you but that's bad advice as otherwise you'll constantly be chasing that high and it will lead to other bad decisions. I think the most important thing is to come to accept the low points and that you don't always need to be running on that exciting feeling of a win. Try to be content with the everyday. Maybe even cut out the highs to find a happier steady state. The lows will probably still be there but hopefully they are lesser too. And it's less of a fall from the extreme high points that make them feel alot more pronounced.

Gambling is not "rigged", the bookmaker just has a profit margin (overround).
A bookmaker's odds compiler might believe all 4 horses in a race have the same 25% chance (25 X 4 = 100%). The fair odds for something known to have a 25% chance is 3/1. Because if all 4 horses had the same 25% chance then a punter could back all 4 @ 3/1 and whoever won would break even... ie £1 bets on all 4 means an overall stake of 4 X £1 = £4... And with 3/1 a £1 stake wins £3 + the £1 stake. £4 staked and £4 returned whoever wins. Which is why the bookmaker adds a profit margin / overround and actually offers not 3/1 but 11/4 (2.75/1) about all 4 runners. 11/4 is 26.7%, so 4 X 26.7 = 106.8%. No longer a "fair" 100% book. The punter no longer able to back all runners and break even. However, with sports betting it is NEVER actually known what the real chance of each horse / team is. So if a knowledgeable punter has worked the same race out as A 25%, B 30%, C 25% and D 20% (25 + 30 + 25 + 20 = 100%)... Then B is in his opinion a good bet @ 11/4, because a 30% strike rate on his 11/4 bets would show a healthy profit. So over time, losing is not "inevitable" if the punter is able to evaluate form into chance better than the odds-compiler.

To all gamblers, please please please at the minimum pay off all your expenses (rent, loans, borrowed money, bills) before you gamble the rest.

He was a CHILD when he started, someone with no life experience and therefore no clue or guidance as to what he was getting himself into. Addiction is just that; it has nothing to do with intelligence, willpower or responsibility, because the brain is wired differently. Gambling addicts simply can't stop by themselves without outside help, any more than the alcoholic or drug addict can't, because the addiction has hijacked their brain and taken control.

He wasn’t pushed by friends or family because by the sounds of it his friends and family never knew and because of that he never seek that support he needed to help him overcome his addiction.
