    Happy Sunday everyone! I have a bit of a bonus Ramble for you today and I'm super excited about it. As you may know, I'm a shawl gal now and I'm just starting to really open my eyes to all that means for me as a knitter and wearer of hand-knit things...in the case of today's video, that means BANDANAS! They're definitely like a cousin to the shawl and they come with an interesting history that I touch on just a smidge here.
    In regards to the history of the bandana, I want to point out one thing in particular:
    The Japanese shibori technique certainly played a part in the development of the more freeform dyeing technique we know of as "tie dye" made popular in the 1960s in the US. However, shibori was and is today a VERY intricate and precious craft that goes far beyond the scope of "tie dye". I encourage you to look into shibori. It's a fascinating craft.

    Tayler - though not all things are for all people, all your videos are for all people! I love your rabbit holes - and your sense of humor, as you (as we all do) find something interesting and wander off into a little reverie. I hope you get a lot of credit for all the WORK you put into these videos, a considerable amount of put into editing. This take s talent and a lot of time. You consistently knock the cover off the ball! Well done.

    Tayler, you do have a way with words! 😄👏🏾
    I liked your history of the bandana, too.
    Thanks for this ramble. I have a couple of these patterns in my library and you've convinced me to pull them out and finally make them!

    Hi Tayler. Very interesting topic. Personally, for me, sitting here in the intense heat and humidity in the northeast, I cannot fathom wearing a knitted bandana in the summer. Actually, unless I’m In air conditioning, I can’t see myself even knitting, lol. That being said, I can definitely see making and wearing these in the late summer when things start to cool off and also in the fall. They would make beautiful accessories and provide warmth. All of these patterns are lovely. Definitely something to think about. Thanks for sharing.😊🤗

Maybe that's something that works in a less moist, more hipster environment; maybe I'm just too old. But I did like the one with a horizontal central section, that would look great as a scarf in the winter.

    Bandanas are also part of queer culture, as they have been and are still used to flag your preferences and kinks worn on the belt or in the pocket. I'm more a straight scarf accessoires type person than bandanas or shawls, still interesting to see what's out there 😊

    • @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS
      @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS  Рік тому +1

      The symbolic use of bandanas across subcultures and communities is VAST and super interesting. And it goes way back in history. The context(s) may have changed over time or in some cases, become more or less subversive, but it still remains a very expressive item of clothing. And a powerful one at that. However, it is also worn by many with no intentional symbolic value, leading to an almost gray area. And like you mention here, it’s not just the bandana; it’s also the way it’s worn. I really went down this rabbit hole and I think it’s so interesting. Thank you for this input!
