    I made this mistake once when I was a teenager. It was my first car. Was drivin home from college and I added 2qts because I knew it would leak every now and then. It started smokin like a chimney but I got it towed to the triple a place and they fixed it for me. They did the exact same thing this guy did and I was back on the road in 2hrs. Scared me half to death. I thought I killed the car

    Too much oil causes the bearings to starve from lack of lubrication because the main crankshaft turns in the oil at high RPMs, turns in the air bubbles, turns the oil into a whipped cream, and that creamy oil cannot be siphoned into the pump and through the oil passages. So the pump can't siphon the creamy oil, while the crank is still whipping, and the bearings will wear out, and over heat. Plus the excessive oil can damage and blow the cam, and main crank seals.
    End result, you're engine's destroyed, and you have a big mess.

    • @backyardchevy328
      @backyardchevy328  4 роки тому +15

      It wont damage gaskets and seals, but that much oil above can be risky..cause the rotating assembly can whip it up and cause it to bubble up kinda like when ur making a milkshake and the bubbles up top are kinda foamy..well that can circulate through ur oil passages and pump..i would drain a lil and put the plug back in just to be safe.

      I know that video is old but I got an oil change on my 2010 Nissan Maxima area this past Thursday before going out of town later that day. About 300 miles round trip. Friday morning started my car and it was so much smoke coming from the tailpipe. Turned it off and then back on and the smoking subsided. Saturday morning same thing, so I had someone come check it out because my car drives fine, sounds okay, and no check engine light. The guy checked the dipstick and said it’s about a quart and a half overfilled. I can’t go back to the shop to drain oil until Monday. Question, does it sound like I might’ve avoided any major damages and should I insist that they check the spark plugs as well tomorrow?

    If it is not too far overfilled you will get some excellent upper cylinder lubrication. Not much else will happen as long as you drain the excess oil out as soon as you can. Good idea to change the filter also while you are at it. If the old oil is anywhere close to needing to be replaced just do what he did in the video.

      No need to pre fill . If you won’t spill any it won’t hurt but not necessary. Many cars have oil filters on angles which would spill out before you screwed down the filter and many have cartridges that you won’t pre fill some even go in the top of the engine with gasket pointing down. Many cars today have the cartridge system. For that matter very expensive cars have the cartridges system.

    I hit a curb cracked my pan, drove 55 minutes back home fine. Next day for work, added 1.5 quarts. Drove 28 miles fine. After work 8 hours later, oil was 98% empty. Just a drop on the tip of the dipstick. So I added 4.5 quarts to drive home. After about 7 minutes, once I hit 50mph rpm started to change up and down 100-300 rpm. On any bump it died and lost power. 20 miles later, Before going uphill on the final stretch I added the last 0.5 quarts as it was not running good with any bump or elevation change besides downhill, with occasional ticking. Cresting hills it ticked even more, audible in cabin. Made it home. Next morning I assumed it was 100% empty again. So I added another 4.5 quarts. Now being 10.5 quarts added in 24 hours. Started up with smoke, and unfriendly ticking for about 5 seconds. Then seemed to go to normal, so I left. The shop was. 3 blocks away. After 2 blocks, continued off a stop light, tons of thick white smoke. No power. And then it died. I immediately turned off engine, waited 1-2 minutes and started again. Didn't run good, but it made it the rest of the way.
    Shop said I overfilled it with about 3-4 quarts. Said there's no scoring on any cylinder walls but they are caked in oil. But I obviously fried the spark plugs, and filled entire exhaust with oil including my muffler and cats. They wanted $1,300 to fix it. So I'm doing it myself in 2 days for a mere $128. Needless to say, lesson learned. Don't assume. And also don't drive somewhere unfamiliar at midnight with terrible headlights..

    I have a 2010 Subaru Forester and made the (more common then it should be) mistake of draining the transmission fluid instead of the oil. I didn't realize my mistake until after I added more oil and went to drive it. At this point I'm at about 8.4 quarts when it takes 4.2. First thing I did was drain the excess oil and add more trans fluid. I took it on a short drive after I did that, lot of smoke, but it drove. About 4 days later I went to drive it again, I make it about 500 ft down the road and I get a CEL. Misfire on cylinder 3 and 4. Going to get spark plugs tomorrow as they're probably oil filled like the ones in the video. Do you think any other serious damage could have been done? (I've only driven it about 5 miles.)

U could disable the ignition and crank it with a compression tester(usually placed like autozone loan em out) and test to make sure they all have compression just to make sure theres no internal damage like bent valve..bad thing about overfilling with oil is if it tries to compress a combustion chamber full fluid the first thing to usually happen is bending a valve.

    Yeah little different than the codes that show up when they put no oil in your vehicle and it’s brand new car it’s not old like this one it’s a 2021 blazer RS with a new engine. But when you drive away with no oil in it. That really starts to destroy it it doesn’t take very long for it to totally seize! They actually tried to say they pulled a half a quart out underneath. But as soon as you take off the actual oil plug it flies out like a sieve! It doesn’t drip out 1/2 a quart, duh. If it’s too much oil then you use some thing like he’s explaining to siphon it out the top. The catastrophic damage that is caused to my vehicle and it’s brand new again every working part in it is so scratched bad but with no oil there are serious problems it scratches the crap out of it in fact one part got so hot it welded itself to it that’s how bad it was. I would love for somebody to show exactly what happens when a engine has no oil in it. A new car not a old one! No redlining or crazy stuff seen that. Of course that’s going to destroy it quickly but if you’re not doing all of that and plus they put some oil into it to try and save it but the damage is already occurred. It only took like 5 miles for it to totally start destroying itself but then they boil into it so it might’ve thought for a second OK but then I got on the freeway and it would not engage it would not shift right it was starting to just fall apart it seized on me before I even got there. Then it cooled down after about 40 minutes of trying to get a police officer to where I was and a tow truck it finally started and went back into gear it sounded like crap but I got it there cause I was literally around the corner and got it into the bed he gets into it. He tries to move it just to get to the stall that’s not that far away and you guess what it is again and we have to push it into the stall! F thus Nationwide chain and it’s even worse when it’s owned by a family he doesn’t want to lose their money over something like this 54 grand I’d be lying my butt off to and trying to send emails saying crazy nonsense and whatever it’s just ridiculous. The one good thing I have going for me is that I have two incredible lawyers that are willing to kick their butts in court most people don’t have that ability when a place like this does this because they have all the money in the world to get a good lawyer well I’ve got two of the best lawyers in my state working on my case and they haven’t even given them a letter yet we’re still trying to work with them we’re still just getting more and more lies as many lives as we possibly can before we actually have to take them to court! They did nothing wrong yet they’re paying for my rental! Ok! That’s usually indicative of feeling pretty damn guilty for destroying someone’s car. I warranty is voided because if their negligence.

Obviously is was over filled...took it home n drained it..had about 10 quart of oil! Smh..so after i drained it i put 4 quarts of new oil.. Ouch thats a lot of oil...hows it run? Usually when its overfilled itll probably cover the entire exhaust system on the inside with oil as well so youll have to burn all that off...so as long as it runs good its more than likely didnt really damage anything..but if it runs bad and keeps smoking could be that it damaged something.

      Well it could, it could cause a lot of issues..like gasket leaks from the excess pressure in engine..if it gets into the combustion chamber the oil gets squeezed and tries to go somewhere ans that could cause head gasket to go..but it would have to be overfilled by a few quarts to cause that much of a problem

    Hi, as i was on a long trip, i got a notice saying to add oil, because my car is old and it burns a little over time on a regular basis. I added a bit too much and about an hour into driving on a highway i started having some problems: a lot of black smoke comes out on >1500rpm and the engine is kind of twitching when i accelerate. @@gsjourney3054 oil filter is messy and depending on size of it itll only get rid of at most half a quart...u can remove the bolt for a few seconds then bolt it back up draining it into a clean container in case u drain too much
