When Should You Pick Broccoli?

Broccoli is usually picked in June (in my Zone 5b gardens). You know they're ready when they are dark green with tight heads. Those heads are tiny buds of flowers and you want to pick them before they open. You'll notice the head stops growing and stays the same size for a couple of days. That is when you should pick it!
After the main head is picked, keep the plant growing and watered because side shoots of little florets will continue to grow, hopefully throughout the entire summer!

I buy a head of broccoli every week. Now I know why sometimes the florets is so tight and other time loose. I never throw anything out. I eat everything, stem and leaves.
