Thanks. I live in florida too. I have one broccoli plant growing right now. This is my first time so I hope it grows
Hopefully the evening temps can hold a bit longer to get a harvest. I still have a couple in the ground too
Thank you for teaching me something.🙂
You bet!
Great content!
Thank you very much. I've been looking at videos for weeks about my broccoli, your the first one to explain it all. i didnt know there was differant types. explains alot for me. thanks again
I’m so glad the video was helpful 💚
Thank you for this information. I live in cold climate and I love broccoli.
Does it grow well for you there?
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a Yes, artichokes too. Amazing artichokes, better than store bought. I’m on the west coast where fog is prevent.
Unfortunately artichokes don’t grow well down here. But there are lots of other cool things to grow.
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a citrus 🍊
I bought some plants at home depot. Hoping they survive. They seen well established so far!
That’s great! Now is the best time to grow it here in the south.
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a I'm just hoping they survive all the rain! Second flood/flood warning in Miami in two months which is so unusual for this time of year
I know. So much rain lately but there are usually a few days in between so that helps. I haven’t watered in weeks because of it.
I’m a little southeast of New Orleans, your video gives me hope!!
Yay! I’m so glad you are enjoying them
Thank you for your video. I am in humid Virginia and it's really heating up my broccoli fast
It has definitely been heating up earlier this season. We have been having 90 degree days since March
You speak with such fluidity! Love this
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video 💚
Green Magic is a good heat tolerant variety and faster maturing. Emerald Crown and Eastern Crown are also good heat tolerant varieties and faster maturing. If you want a slower variety, Use Imperial. Imperial has a great root system and utilizes nitrogen very efficiently. All these are from Sakata.
Nice! I’m going to try a couple of these this year. Thank you 💚
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a Arcadia has been discontinued.
@@Nitrodan73 I still have a supplier on Amazon that I get mine from. Not sure for how long though so I need to start trying some other varieties
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a It’s been dropped for a while so brassica seed has a good shelf life for about 5 years then it starts declining fast. Start trying those other varieties I suggested. They’re all pretty different animals. You can plant Green Magic and Imperial at the same time and they’ll come off about 10 days to 14 days apart. Most of the time. Emerald Crown will be about Green Magic speed. Maybe faster.
@@Nitrodan73 are they all bigger heads?
I grow heat tolerant broccoli and cauliflower in KS. Our summers come on fast and they can both be tricky to grow. If you live in a cooler climate your blessed. I find them the hardest plants to get consistent results from. 😢
Thanks for sharing! Here in Florida, heat tolerant varieties are key
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a I was just thinking about you having trouble getting Arcadia seed and I have the same problem with packman seed. A nursery where I live sells packman plants so this year I'm buying one just to harvest the seed. Hopefully they have some. Maybe you could do the same with Arcadia. Gypsy is another heat tolerant variety I'm going to try this year.
@@kansasgardener5844 I’m definitely going to give it a shot this year but it’s a hybrid so it’s a bit of a gamble but totally worth it for me.
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a I get that. All my tomatoes are hybrids or I would save the seeds. Good luck.
I live in Missouri. I bought broccoli plants for the first time this year. Now, I'm wondering how they're going to grow in the summer heat. Maybe I'll bring the plants inside for some AC at night. Ha, ha!
really good advice... I will act on it!!!
Glad it was helpful
That is a beauty! I have brassica envy now. lol
Haha 😆. Love it
Perfect timing 👌
Yay 🙌
Thank you for your video.I am growing Cicco broccoli, here in Puerto Rico and I am going to use a lot of your ideas.👍
Awesome! I’ve grown that one before. Let me know what you think.
Oh, thank you for your video! I planted broccoli for the first time and I just saw them today with little yellow flowers! Glad to know those are still edible! 😊
Glad it was helpful!
What time of year did you do this video? Thanks for the great growing tips. I live in south Texas.
I made this video last year in January. This year, I harvested broccoli until just a couple weeks ago.
Thanks for another great video. I love growing broccoli!! 💚🌱
That’s awesome! It’s one of my favorites 👩🌾 🥦
Paper rolls to protect roots? Natural compost too.
🤯🤯
You should see my lovely broccoli. A whole quarter size heads! 😂
Haha! Probably sprouting broccoli. Do you recall the variety?
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a Calabrese. I'll cut off the top and leave it for side shoots. We had a really weird spring so I'm not surprised. I'm in Pa zone 6b and we had a really warm February and March and then a cold April and May. We are having some days where it's 80 during the day and then 45 at night. We had a 38 degree night a few weeks ago.
Wow. That’s crazy. It has been a weird weather year. Normally we don’t get our extreme heat until April but we had some days in late January that hit 90s.
You have got to try a burger wrapped in a broccoli leaf. They make good wraps!
Oh man, now that sounds good!
Where do you get your broccoli seeds from? I’m in south Florida zone 10a, so I’m hoping I can grow it too 😊
I get mine from Amazon but I saw them on papawsgarden.com too
how hot does it get wher3 your at it gets triple digits around June to September I'm trying Malabar spinach this year mor3 drought tolerant
We normally stay right under 100 but with way too much humidity
Спасибо очень хорошее видео.
I’m glad you enjoyed it
If you leave a side shoots, you'll get some more broccoli
That’s my favorite part!
I'm growing purple broccoli
Nice! I love the different colored broccoli
I noticed your seedlings had some leaf miners. It didnt look out of control or anything, just sayin. Very pretty garden you have there. What latitude are you on? I live in south texas so our weather is very similar. I bought some green magics this year from wally world a little over a month or so ago and am going to eat my first head tonight. Thanks for the insight!
Congrats on your harvest! Yes, I always have leaf minors. I don’t treat for it and usually they don’t get out of control. I’m in central Florida zone 9b
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a ok, cool! I just browsed a few of yer vids and decided to sub. Our weather is so similar that pretty much what you plant and grow, so can I. Lookin forward to the knowledge I will be able to absorb from you. Thanks much!
@@ReeferMadmanThanks so much for the sub!
Hi, I'm in St Pete Fl and just planted broccoli for the 1st time in early Nov. They look OK but they seemed to have laid over and the stem where it goes into the soil seems very thin and vulnerable. Is that normal and if not is there anything I can do? Thanks.
If they are not getting enough light they get tall and lanky and eventually fall over. These would probably die but heathy ones can fall over sometimes too. You are more than welcome to send me a pic on insta or to my email and I can take a look. Petrinahomegrownflorida@gmail.com
Thank you for a brilliant vid!! Quick question on the toilet roll barriers you use, how tall do you usually make them. I.e should it be half the height of the seedling or perhaps shorter. Thanks alot. Also im in Jamaica so any tips on when the best time to sow would be or the type, im assuming the same heat tolerance as Florida.
I make sure they are at least had the size of the seedling. That usually does the trick. I just started seeds for broccoli this week. I’ve been to Jamaica and if I remember correctly, you’re probably about one month behind my current location, so maybe try starting them in September or October
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a ...okaaaay! this really useful to know. I have actually started my seedling already and appear ok atm, but ill defo try another set when you recommend. 👍👍
@@chubbster1969 the best way to know for sure is to start seedlings every month and see which ones do best. The earlier you can get broccoli the better. It’s my favorite.
Good vid. What zone are you?
Thanks! I’m in Florida and zone 9a
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a cool. Ive had success with imperial broccoli in 9B. Also I’ve grown the piricaba with mixed results.
Yeah, I feel the same about the sprouting broccoli. Not my favorite but I keep trying.
I have a 60/40cm crate maybe 30cm deep. Covered with soil in loads of organic garden compost. I sprinkled seed all over the compost rich soil covered under net to deter birds. It has geminated to some 15 cm tall . I am transplanting to garden now, after 6 weeks of seeding. . . I don't now how long it will take to produce a broccoli head ready to harvest. First time growing organic broccoli ❤️😂. Thanks for Info 😂
They usually take between 3-4 months to produce the main head and then they will continue to produce side shoots for another 4-6 weeks after that (possibly longer).
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a that sounds great I will continue 😂🇷🇺🇿🇦❤️
My cutworms eat the toilet paper rolls 😭 they are the worst. I have to use aluminum paper around the stems. I am growing Arcadia broccoli for the first time this year, you are right, it is not easy to find.
Wow. Those are some determined cut worms. I guess mine are lazy. They give up easy.
Arcadia has been discontinued. Use Green Magic, Eastern Crown or Emerald Crown. Good heat Tolerant varieties. Imperial is another good one. From Sakata
Где вы покупали семена?
I actually had to source them from Amazon because they are no longer produced
Can I ask what area of FL you're in? Trying to get an idea of when to plant. Probably too late for this year, but I've been bombing since trying to grow anything other than chili peppers.
I’m in Spring Hill just north of Tampa. I do a video at the start of every month that shows all the things I’m starting in my garden and any special projects I’ll be doing. I give adjustments on timeline for north and south Florida areas too. Check it out and let me know what you think.
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a all y'all are in Tampa area! Haha.... Appreciate you and love learning from y'all. I'm due east on the space coast.
Nice! Love that area. We still have lots of time to grow if you want to give broccoli a try. Just try to find a variety with a quick number of days to harvest. You got this 👊
Lakeland here and I'm going to try this fall
@@joebird1400 Yay 🙌
What kind of broccoli do you grow? I'm in zone 8b and I've tried and tried in spring and it never works so I'm doing it in Fall and hope that stupid white butterfly doesn't show back up
I grow mine exclusively in fall and winter. I grow Arcadia but I’ve heard Green Magic does well too
When you say “plant in cooler weather” do you mean transplant them from container or put seeds in containers?
Usually transplant from container. I start my seeds when it’s still warm in August or September here in Florida in preparation for cooler weather in October
А какой вид брокколи выращиваете в этом году?
I grew Arcadia, Purple of Sicily, and Romenesco. They all did very well
Are you growing primarily in raised beds?
Most of my annual garden is in beds or a greenstalk. My tropical plants, berries, and fruit trees are all in the ground. I also grow a bunch of Florida natives in ground.
Barrow alaska has 60 days of complete darkness and alaska has 24 hours of daylight in certain parts as well, im not sure if thats all alaska or not. I know the 60 days of darkness is just the northernmost part known as barrow. They have really weird weather.
They really do have weird weather. I’m not sure how I would manage 60 days of darkness.
@Homegrown Florida I've heard that it really affects people's psyches when it does that. That people either don't sleep or they sleep too much and the drinking rate goes up a lot when it happens, same for the 24hr daylight in summers. People don't sleep and I've heard that the bars usually get a good bit more business during that time period. Very strange. I can see how it could get depressing and/or throw off your sleep or make you wanna possibly drink... and I'm sure if they're doing that usage of other things probably increases too. That would be so strange. 60 days of darkness. That's like straight out of a horror movie. In fact they made a movie about that where a bunch of vampires go to this little town up there and, well you can imagine what they do lol. It was a bit too gory for me.
@@emdeejay7432 I’ve seen that movie too. It’s enough to keep me out of Alaska 🤣. Just kidding. I would love to go their for a visit some day.
Do you need to protect it from direct sunlight
Shade cloth or shade would help if temps are getting in the 80s otherwise, direct sun should be fine.
I'm young and I'm a gardener😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
