      Love it. I often sit there with my seedlings and just watch them be. So peaceful. My goal is to have my office filled with hydroponics, I think instead of a massive tv some beautiful micro greens would be much more satisfying haha.

    For those in the US, green broccoli is sometimes easier as a fall crop. The pest pressure is much less, there's less chance of bolting in our hot summers, it sweetens with a frost and it's good to fill in the gaps when the warm weather veg are done or on their way out. Most garden centers don't carry seedlings later in the year so you'd need to plan to grow your own from seed.

      I plant mine in spring and fall. In spring, once I transplant, I cover with mesh and I don't have pest problems. I get to harvest before it gets too hot for them to bolt.

    • @dianeladico1769
      @dianeladico1769 2 роки тому +4

      @@gardeningwithprincess Our pest pressure is heavy and while the mesh slows them down there's still a fair amount of damage. The last two years we went from balmy to sweltering in no time. So glad you get to enjoy great success with both crops-broccoli is so good.

      Oh those white demon butterflies just love cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower! They drive me crazy and I have never been so tempted to use the wrong treatment! This year I bought concrete metal ladders ($3.00ish for 10’) making hoops and will cover them with netting (tulle from Hobby Lobby). I will win, I will win against the butterflies laying their eggs on my crops this year! LOL

    • @smile30981

      @@deborah820 Good luck and I'll be building a little netting house for my brassicas too! Laughed out loud at "those white demon butterflies"! :D Fits them perfectly.

    • @dianeladico1769
      @dianeladico1769 2 роки тому +2

      @@deborah820 I used those last year-very handy. The only thing was I needed additional bracing as they wanted to bend towards one another from the pull of the netting. I pushed them in each side to the first cross brace and they bent right at the ground. Not a deal-breaker but I ended up using a bit of rebar to hold them straight. This year I will cut one to form a ridge across the top of the arches to support the fabric better as it drooped in the middle. I just have to watch the sharp edges.
      You will beat the demon butterflies!

    Hi Ben,
    I sowed my brassicas 2 years ago and they're all still giving me plenty to harvest... This happened as my broccoli seedlings were super Leggy! This meant their first head was tiny!! But the secondary crop you mentioned want just secondary, but all year. They basically all became 'sprouting' broccoli.
    Seeing as I find I don't use masses of brassicas in my food (little and often), getting big heads of broccoli, cabbage and waiting for those tight sprouts to form on my brussels wasn't the best way....so we incorporated the 'cut and come again' method to our brassica as well as our salads!!!
    Brussel leaves are amazing and their yellow flowers attract the bees and also make delicious eating too; nice and sweet!
    I must admit, all the brassica family's flowers are delicious and edible, so don't worry if you miss harvesting that big calebrese head before it bolts, as the pollinators love them and so do we! Still edible and still as nutritious and beautiful too.
    My kids will go out purposefully looking for the sprout flowers to snack on raw as they're so sweet!
    Cabbages too, if you miss harvesting that head, don't worry as it'll open up and send a 'broccoli' style flower shoot up and again....edible, beautiful and delicious and so are the leaves from that head as you can still harvest them!
    I wish I could share the photos with you, they're fascinating; I have 4 types of cabbages growing in 20cm pots (they're 1m tall and thriving!), Brussels in my flower beds and both calabrese and Purple sprouting in planters and amongst my rhubarb. They all give a wonderful display and flower in different ways... I love them, can you tell...?
    Kale too....eat the flowers and tender stems too...yummy winter/spring delicacy!
    Ok, enough brassica beaming....bye for now,
    Sammi! 🥦🥬🌻🐝

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  2 роки тому +2

      Wow - that's a fantastic brassica bonanza you have there Sammi - good work! I love the fact you let them flower too - as you say the bees love the flowers. My kale has started flowering so I'm going to harvest them like sprouting broccoli.

      How do you keep critters and pests out of your brassicas?

    • @Munchkinzi
      @Munchkinzi Рік тому +4

      @@lindaelert1796 Mostly, if I see any leaf damage I will hunt for caterpillars and get rid of any along with any eggs that I happen upon.
      Last year I netted them but they still managed to land on some of the leaves that had pushed against the netting...so still hunted caterpillars then.
      Slug beer traps get most of the slugs as being in wooden planters, the slimey things tend to hide between the soil and wood throughout the day.
      The other amazing thing is that I have a lot of wasps visiting my garden.... I've sat and watched them hunt and it's incredible! They hover around my kale and cabbages, landing here and there hunting caterpillars! When they find one, they take them to my apple tree out of the way and feast before hunting again!
      So, there's MY pest control tips..if you can call that walkthrough a tip 🤣😋 xx
      Good luck

    I am so enjoying starting seedlings!! I grew up on a 40 acre produce farm as the youngest of 7 children, so I only got in on the tail end of the family business, but my father and grandfather had a open air market for over 50 years! Anyway, we always planted on the back of a 2 row planter with plants, I was never in the greenhouse with the seeds, wish I would have been but making up for it now. I'll never forget years ago when I started gardening and harvested broccoli florets for a spring salad and was taking a bite when I noticed cabbage worms in my salad. I was so repulsed I never grew broccoli again. Fast forward to experience, I did use the mesh Ben was speaking of on my fall kale crop and never had such beautiful Dino Kale leaves to eat with no holes. This spring I will being growing more brassicas vegetables like cabbage, broccoli and kale. Its not foolproof but the mesh is worth it.

    I use Tulle to cover my plants and it works great! You can find it in most craft stores, Walmart and Amazon also carries it. This is my first year for growing broccoli and I planted Seeds of Change Early Green Broccoli seeds using the winter sowing method. It's a little over 7" tall now so I can transplant the 5 into a larger container. I also have Green Sprouting Calabrese seeds to plant later. I'm in zone 6b/7a.

    just letting you know down below:
    I grow purple sprouting broccoli ( first type I grew as a boy) and an F1 hybrid named TenderStem.
    Remarkably, purple sprouting will grow 4 plants in a 1 foot square providing that the surrounding squares have shorter plants such as carrot, radish or even pot marigold.
    TenderStem is a variety

      Last year i found out just how cunning they were..
      I only had a few cabbage so everyday I'd be on patrol for them little yellow eggs.. well thinking i was the smart one I'd brush them off... Job done.... so i thought.. they then started laying SINGLE eggs over the leaf... Very difficult to spot.
      So over winter thought I'd put frames around my beds and cover with fleece..
      Like i said as cabbages grew they touched fleece and spotted eggs....
      Cunning ??.

    I started my broccoli indoors in early February and planted half out in March. Sadly the first wave got hammered by a freak 18° for two nights, then bounced back slightly only to get devoured by slugs. Two of those plants bravely carried on and seem to be rebounding, but I don’t know if they will be ready to harvest before the heat sets in here in Virginia. Good thing I held some back which I set out a couple weeks later under cover and they are doing well. Fingers crossed. Netting is a must because of those darned caterpillars.

    My first year of gardening, I guess I just got really lucky, because my spring-planted broc produced large, prolific, delicious heads. Every year since, they've failed miserably, I think because it gets too hot for their liking before they're fully mature. And "hot" in my climate is really just 85 F. or so. Gonna have to a late-summer planting this yr so they mature in the cooler autumn days.
