Coming from an indie wargaming perspective it's a bit of an odd question, because Warhammer is so mainstream by comparison to the rest of the hobby. There'll always be a cap on how big it can get because the game is logistically painful when compared to board/card games, but it feels a few decades removed from being an obscure little nerd hobby.
Right? When will Warhammer be mainstream? Now. It is currently incredibly mainstream compared to any other miniature wargames, and only getting moreso.
How many painting channels and stl patreons are there catering specifically to 40k, let alone the rest of GW? Know how there's an entire company built on ripping off GW Games and models? Remember when there were comparisons between BG3 and the new rogue trader game? Or how Helldivers units kept getting called dreadnoughts because of 40k? Warhammer is massive

Point of interest - the main reason we didn't see merchandise for Rings of Power is because the merchandising rights weren't sold alongside the rights to make the show itself. Amazon would've loved to make merchandise for RoP, but they would've had to cut in another group in order to do so.
The copyright for Middle Earth as a whole is a very complex issue.

As someone who has played since Rogue Trader, the day I saw a White Dwarf in an American grocery store "impulse buy" magazine rack was a wild mind blow.

The warhammer setting has massive potential if they managed to let quality writers work on stories. Videogames have already been popular enough to be able to lift things to the next level of popularity too. The actual miniature wargaming? Painting is too hard, and the games take too long.
I imagine an alternative GW that rethinks its strategy and lets the miniature part of the business be second or third fiddle, but I suspect that the current company isn't built for this at all.

On the subject of Warhammer in mainstream - I went to watch Dune Part 2 on the weekend. I personally loved it, but all the while I was thinking, I hope the 40k shows/films get the same level of detail and treatment as what Denis Villeneuve/Hans Zimmer have done for Dune. Of course there will be those that didn't like it, but to me the aesthetic and the soundscape was so on point. In an age where most cinema is just a jizzfest of CGI used without restraint, it's refreshing to see it used intelligently. It truly bought about a sense of scale and verisimilitude.
I personally think Dune 1 & 2 when considered as a single thing are a modern masterpiece.
An episode could be... a mechanics adept on Mars cleaning a redeptor dreadnought with a jet washer. 👌
you guys really need to get the Darkstar Molten Metals metallics set. They have a big selection of both white and yellow metals (10 of each) on top of that, Bronze and Copper tones, the new "Gemstone" colored metals plus the 4 new washes, it really is a great set! On top of that, they can be buffed once cured
Let's be honest, the AoS universe (big game, Warcry, Underworlds) has the best GW miniatures. I mean, I get it that people like Space Marines, but come on. It's the same mini, over and over again...
My biggest concern with the hobby becoming mainstream is GW Can barely manage srock levels with current demand imagine. If that demand explodes after the amazon show.... Will they off shore it to get faster and cheaper production or will they have invested enough in the uk to handle the demand ? 🤔 Either way i hope the product isnt deminished

The question is will games workshop be able to keep more than 10 models in production at anyone time if they become more mainstream.
If they aren't seriously considering outsourcing some plastic production, at least in the interim, then they are mental. Can't build a new factory fast enough.
Warhammer suffers from being simultanesously too deep and too shallow to ever be mainstream. Its got a thousand factions/characters and most can be entirely encapsulated in one line. - this is perfect for a wargame (lots to choose from and embrase the theme of) but terrible for mainstream interest/tv/movies

Wingspan is real and it's fantastic! Thoroughly recommend the digital version.
I hope space marine 2 is safe also. Darktide was almost good but it’s got way too many cash grab elements dragging it down. I spent hours trying to unlock cool skins in vermintide 2. In Darktide, instead of a fun loot loop, you can have cool cosmetics for the low price of 15 dollars a set
Space Marine 2 from what I have heard from the Chans is written by a danger hair, so expect the worst...

When people moan about the mainstream, and it 'watering down' Warhammer, what are the most successful fantasy and scifi adaptations in recent memory? The ones which genuinely became 'mainstream'? Beyond the MCU, there was Lord of the Rings, A Game of Thrones, Dune, the Boys, and Harry Potter? I dont think any of them watered down their source material, and it's those TV series - GOT and the Boys - which show that studios can take a dark source material and keep it dark, while making them more diverse and progressive too.

Why do people paint like if the light is coming from a certain angle why not just paint the miniature as when people look and turn it the light would be coming from a different angle lol
Because it looks flat and boring. Painting it with no highlight or shade doesn't look realistic.
monopoly for X franchise is always a really thin skin over the top. Risk does edit itself more to give you the option to play a more franchise flavoured risk. For example star wars risk allows you to declare order 66

Warhammer 40k can either match Warcraft (which eventually died out except for dedicated fans and became watered down) or will exceed Warcraft’s popularity and become like Star Wars or Game of Thrones. Warcraft’s live action movie was a huge waste of potential. Let’s see if Cavill does better…
The WoW movie underperformed for Western audiences, but was massive in China. For the love of God I hope your referring to season 1-3 of GOT and the pre-Disney Starwars...😅
For the power wash Sim part: there's a game reviewer called "skillup" who is very prominent in the games industry. He loves 40k from a distance and eats up tie ins and licensed products including the power wash Sim dlc because he did a whole review on the game and loved it

Games Workshop has had a real habit of (forgive the language) whoring out their licence to videogame developers over the years. The slew of terrible and forgettable games is seemingly endless, if the game is decent it's always because of the licence and in spite of the game itself, without the Warhammer licence the game would be trash. The "mainstream popularity" of Warhammer will hinge on the success and quality of the Amazon show, I'm not sure which outcome I prefer to be honest.

GW is pricing the wargame out of relevance. Sure its still by a wide margin the most popular miniature wargame company, but it's hard to sell someone on 1k to start playing. The game would do well to lower the price 20% (minimum) and meaningfully expand access to the fun part, customising stuff to make it 'yours'. Primaris proportions were a great move for the appearance of the models, but by god they're so same-same, and that's partly a rule issue. Home 3d printing should not be taking up where the company should be. Didn't WG used to sell bits? Let a fan make a TH/SS Gravis man with a beaky hat. The profit over all approach is costing the game long term business, IMO.
I can understand why people in the 41st millennium dont like astropaths cos if only one of them breaks whilst on a ship everyone on that ship is going to have a really bad day! Not just the poor astropath whos mind has broken!

I don't think it's possible to make 40k a mainstream medium. There are so many things that would have to change to make it appealling to a mass audience that it would cease to be 40k.
oh, come on! Helldivers is based purely on Starship Troopers. It has some similarities with Warhammer, ok, but this is now "wh40k vibes seeping in".
The licensing might be to spread the name. Monopoly for boardgamers, Magic the Gathering for cardgamers, Call of duty skins, that powerwash thing... It looks like one entry-awareness point per 'group'.
As for rings of power, that was just plain bad. Several youtubers went into perfect detail why it is bad so I wont delve into it here. "Disparu" has a 11 ep. playlist breaking it down 😂
I gave up trying to read the 3 body problem due to how ridiculous and tedious I found it. Interesting to hear that they are leaning in to the rather tertiary alien invasion aspect of it.
I hope never. Having seen the results of other things I was a fan of go mainstream, you can look forward to anything you love about it getting watered down for mass consumption if it does. Appeal to the lowest common denominator if nothing else.

You guys are talking about 40K in comparison to Lord of the Rings. I get it, as they are both game lines GW has, but there were 150 million copies of Lord of the Rings sold, and that had been passed on to family etc prior to the movies, which launched it into the lexicon of daily use. 40K has no good guys, all bad guys. It’s going to be more like The Expanse. I’m sure it can be popular, but it’s still not going to be generally popular and “mainstream”. Especially in our modern society. If they stay true to the universe, it’s not going to be acceptable by modern standards. Personally, I’d hate the story if they try and make it more modern. It would turn into the shitshow that Amazon made of Wheel of Time, which would be really sad. Honestly, if they go 30K/Horus Heresy at least there could be a good guy/bad guy concept and they could market that. I could see that becoming more mainstream. But 40K is a story about a dead galaxy that has not realized it’s dead.
There clearly are good and bad guys in 40k. So tired of people repeating this nonsense. You are doing exactly what your complaining about and putting today's standards onto a fantasy world.
The problem with the mainstream is it means dumbing down. While 40k isnt exactly subtle there are some pretty deep themes being explored in the setting. The power of faith, the futility of violence and the nature of human beings to name a few. These give the setting a richness that would be lost if it were MCU'd 😢
Unfortunately there is already a sizeable contingent of fans who don't or refuse to understand these themes. I fear that segment is fixing to grow exponentially.

If you love the Warhammer why would you want it to become mainstream...just for it to be co-opted, rewritten and destroyed? Ask Lord of the Rings or The Witcher fans how Amazon and Netflix did with their takes on these beloved franchises.

I'd say by definition to get something mainstream it largely has to change what it is to begin with. If black metal were to 'become mainstream', almost by definition it'd change what it fundamentally is to 'capture' the new audience. This is everyone's main concern. Hopefully Warhammer going mainstream would only do so due to a change in media format and not subject matter / tone of the universe. I'd say it's bad enough the primarchs are returning so 40k to me is already dying.

Eh, the GW shoot interviews would have gotten old pretty quick. I think the split is actually good for their respective talents, sucks there seems to have been bad blood though.
If the Amazon series is a giant success like GOT, then it will become mainstream. Of course, that would also mean GW will have to minimize the pro-fascist elements of the narrative and a lot of the grimderp all the racist 40k gatekeepers love will also have to go in the bin to appeal to the everyday viewer.

You could not have picked a worst example than the Halo TV series (other than possibly the Last of Us TV series!), all the fans wanted out of that was an Band of Brothers-esqe ODST series, or possibly a BSG "realist" perspective on the Navy, anything other than Spartans or the Chief!
