Johnny Marr IS the signature sound of the Smiths. His guitar efforts gave the Smiths their soul.

I'll always argue that Morrissey as much as Johnny gave the Smiths their signature sound. Both their music is shit these days, that doesn't change the signature brilliance to morrissey's lyrics and johnny's guitar playing.

I met this guy in 2019, after one of his concerts in Italy. Nicest dude ever! He was so humble and polite; he even took some time to chat and ask questions to every single person who had been waiting for him. I remember him asking me what genres I listened to and if I played any instruments. I was shaking so much, I almost passed out haha! He really did his best to calm me down, lol! I'm 18 and Johnny is literally one of my biggest idols. I'm so happy my expectations were not disappointed, I swear I'll remember that day until I die.

marr is way better than morrissey these days imo. morrisseys voice is unique ofc, but his band is so average and destroys the magic of the songs. and the fact he has turned into the kind of old fart he once rebelled against isnt helping ofc. in marrs band at least there is life and joy, and his guitar reminds me of why i loved the smiths.

Johnny Marr recognizes that his work in The Smiths opened up opportunities for all the success he has today (and let's face it, the man is very professionally successful). But without Johnny Marr, there would be no The Smiths. And without The Smiths, there would likely be no successful version of Morrissey.
Morrissey's success as a solo artist all came from work that had the same musical aesthetic as The Smiths. His first solo album, Viva Hate, in particular sounded extremely like "the next" Smiths album - and not just because of his voice, but the entire production of the music & the band behind him. It solidified him as a solo artist - legendary. And that sound & style maintained really well, until about the mid-90's, where it became less & less consistent from there (whether by choice or by inability to creatively sustain it). His legacy as an artist, though, never faded.
I say this because I realize there are fans / followers that mistakenly think this: The Smiths was never all Morrissey. But the *good* solo works of Morrissey, have always been in-no-small-part The Smiths.
