Question with what is going on with unity, do you think it's a good idea for people to learn unity or to learn a different game engine that isn't having problems?

Hi, Thomas! If you want to make mobile games, Unity is almost a must. If you are interested in AAA you are probably better off with Unreal. If you want to get a game developer job fast go with Unity. If you are interested in movies and VFX, it is Unreal again. If you do not want to code, Unreal's visual scripting is better. If you want an engine with a larger community and more tutorials, it is Unity. So, there are no clear answers. I personally learned Unity because I already knew C#. If you know C++ Unreal is better. If you know Python, then Godot is the way to go. All in all, I think it is definitely worth learning Unity, but so is learning Unreal. You cannot go wrong with either of those, but of course each has strengths and weaknesses. At the end of the day, an engine is just a tool, it can make certain parts of the development easier, but whether a game will be good depends on the developer.

Regarding the problems: yes, Unity had some questionable decisions lately, but it is not really having problems. They have a really huge market share (50% on steam games and 70% on mobile, if I remember correctly, they said these data on the 2022 Keynote opening video), they will not go away any time soon.

@@bencemervay Thank you for the reply and the input. I might look back at unity some day, I worry about what they are doing. I will keep working with godot for the moment. Godot 4 is a major upgrade from godot 3.5.

@@thomasparker7305 ah, so you are already developing games. Tricky :) My main issue with Godot is that finding a job with it is way harder than Unity or Unreal as not many studios use it. My minor issue is gdscript. I am not really a fan of python, but that is a personal preference (python is a very useful language). But the way I see it, industry usage will probably increase with the Godot 4 release, so I think it is a reasonable choice on the long run.

@@bencemervay I like c++ the best, I'm also not a fan of python type of languages, I like the use of the bracket. Godot does show the spacing so it's easy to get the spacing correct. You can also use c# in Godot. And yes you are correct that not many studios use Godot, the same as at one time they didn't use unity or unreal. I really think it's picking up steam though, and I can see a future where Godot is in the space also. The studios spend a lot to use the game engine, the fees to them, Godot has no fees and if godot doesn't have a special feature or needs a tweek they have full access to the source code. Yes it will take a while but I do see that happening. One thing Godot needs to figure out is a store that people can sell and buy assets.
