I knew the Doctor's speech would tear you up. It was one of his memorable moments, well acted by Matt Smith. Through him, you can feel the Doctor's pain over not just losing the Ponds but everyone else he has ever lost before them like Rose and Donna.
And he acts like he is okay but you can clearly tell he is far from okay. Imagine having lived for over a thousand years, travelling from place to place, never really settling anywhere therefore having no home, being accompanied by people from different generations, young and old, a lot of the time by choice and you remind them how dangerous your life is and they insist on coming with you. A while later you regret letting them travel with you at all as they face their demise and what's left? You being alone again and this becomes a loop and you blame yourself for it because you feel like you killed them
I like that, after he loses someone he goes through this grieving process. And his therapy, is basically venting his problems to a star god, until it implodes.
One of the most underrated episodes ever for me. My heart breaks all the time during the Doctor's speech. It's one of the best things ever. And I did tear up, I always do with that speech and it's one of the highlights of Matt Smith's run. Glad another person enjoyed this episode, it's a treat

I personally like to think he's referring to a story arc from Big Finish's Eighth Doctor audios. That universe being the Divergent Universe. It's...probably not, but considering Moffat is a huge Big Finish fan (even though he bungled writing Eight a bit for Night of the Doctor and pissed on his character development, but whatever), it's not out of the realm of possibility.
Hands down personally this moment made the 11th my favorite doctor, the whole speech you could just feel all the sorrow the doctor had bottled up inside him. You could feel his pain. Everytime i watch this i get chills and tears. To top it off that head tilt by the doctor at the end of the speech, he was disappointed that it didn't take him. You could just tell that he was hurting so much, he wanted to be taken. Thats how i interpret that head tilt anyway
I think the head tilt wasn't just disappointment but weariness from being alive for so long and all the pain and loss he has endured. The silhouette of the doctor after the head tilt is that of an old and bitter man who is hurting so much from everything he has lost, especially recently.
real underrated episode. The core whovians rank it probably in the bottom 25 percentile. I like it a lot. for similar reasons you stated. The singing scene is an iconic dr who scene.
The music of modern Doctor Who is not acknowledged enough for its contribution to the show in my opinion. And the man responsible for this is named Murray Gold. In this episode its his composition of "The Long Song" that adds to Eleven's speech. He also wrote "Clara Theme" which is a fan favorite (my personal favorite is "Martha's Theme"). Here's to Murray Gold, the ultimate honorary Companion.

For me, the music of Dr. Who is as important as any of the characters. The music adds to the mood and context of whatever is being portrayed by the actors and is an integral and indispensable part of the overall production. Murray Gold has done an outstanding job of composing some of the most iconic musical scores in modern history. Also, kudos to Ben Foster for conducting the orchestra as well.

@@themasterofterriblecgi5498 Which sources? Unless contrary info appears onscreen in the show itself, via image or dialogue, I tend to default to assuming it's set concurrently with airdate. If it is the same date as the attack, that by itself isn't an implication. To imply she died in the attack, there would have to be a reference to it, at least obliquely. Also, Clara is from Blackpool, originally, which decreases the chances that her mother would have been in London at the time.
And the way, Matt Smith inflicts his lines in this particular speech is just sublime! I can´t think of any better speech, that he had! (however I can think of a few, some of the other Doctors had.....)
I am SO HAPPY that you liked The Rings of Akhaten so much! Not everything makes sense, and it doesn't have to. It's an explosion of imagination and creativity, it's weird and wonderful. Most episodes focus on excitement and plot, but this is pure wonder and awe. "Can you feel the light on your eyelids? That is the light of an alien sun." A line that always gives me chills.
I don't consider myself an emotional person. But some of the moments in Doctor Who get me going like nothing else. This is one of them, and I subscribed to you because I see my own emotions on your face at the exact same moments. Despite any existing barriers of time and space, you are me. And I am you. Is this not what the Doctor would have wanted?

I think it's an enjoyable episode, especially The Doctor's speech. But it was a bit of a damp squib that immediately following was Clara going "screw your timelord memories, i have a leaf"
It's pretty much the epitome of a 'Turn off your snarky analytical side and just enjoy it for what it's meant to be' episode. Most of Doctor Who is the kind of stuff you can look into, pick apart and enjoy that way, Rings of Akhaten is one where you can't really do that, just accept it for what it's meant to be and don't focus on the bouts of poor writing
I always liked the subtle reference that the day her mum died was when the Auton's attacked in Rose(very least was when the episode aired). Also that music cue still gets me, especially with hindsight to what it was setting up.
I've watched this episode so many times that I stopped feeling emotional about it a long time ago but now watching it with you, it all comes back and I'm getting all the emotion of that speech as if it's the first time again. That's why I love watching these reactions. Thank you for that.
You didn't show it in the reaction but the Doctor mentions his granddaughter. That's Susan, one of the very first companions from the classic series, and also the first one to leave.
I also loved the moment, when the Doctor sings along EVEN BEFORE the line happens (also not in the reaction). It´s a small moment and they didn´t even dub it in the German version (where I live), but it really shows, how much the Doctor has come around in space and time!...
OMG the Big Finish short Trip which has come out with 8 and Susan is so sad -basically Susan is just living her life in 2180 or something and crazy stuff keeps happening as the Doctor doesn’t want her to join the Time War

Re watching some old vids and this is probably one of the most beautiful and wholesome reactions I’ve seen, this episode hit me differently when I first watched it and your tears, emotion and just the way you were watching the speech moment as the music flowed was so genuine and amazing ✨
Watching this again because this speech ALWAYS gives me strength. NO ONE can take your personal experiences away from you, even if they view it as content or fuel for their own agenda. You are your own power, and the more you live through, even though it isn't easy to tell or hear, if you are still here, you have won.
thinking about it, how many episodes would people consider 'Clara centred'? matt smith did a beautiful job bringing that monologue to life, and paired with the music & the pain and anguish you can hear in his voice, all the heartache from all the friends he's lost, the lonely days in the tardis, and of course, he's still mourning the ponds at this point, aswell as all he lost as ten. so all of that just piles & piles on top of the doctor's speech, and you just hear it. idk, its just a really gorgeous scene and writing is beautiful and matt smith is such a brilliant actor.

I loved The Doctor's line about how our souls are our stories, the stories of those we loved. His speech is epic. There are some good fan vids on that speech that insert scenes from earlier episodes that match what he was talking about.

This is why I loved Eleven. He was just done. He had enough and wasn't going to take anymore. Even to the point of being almost suicidal. That episode was very powerful

I liked this episode, but it's always bugged me that the Doctors memories didn't burn up the Parasite but Claras leaf did - I understand the whole "infinite possibilities" thing, but EVERY item/person has an infinite amount of futures that never happened. In fact I remember hearing/reading that the writer of the episode originally wrote it so that the Doctor burned the parasite but Moffatt wanted Clara to save him...ergh.
Personally like it more this way, because people tend to neglect the small things in life and this episode makes it clear that every little thing in the universe (even an ordinary leaf) is very important to someone or something. I love this message!
liam gallone yeah but that means that the parasite should have died the very first time it tried to eat something as every single object has infinite potential futures...
An object isn't going to be imbued with the psychic energy of infinite possibilities if that isn't how someone views that object. If the leaf was just a reminder of her mother and the time they spent together that's all the energy she would have given it and it wouldn't have been enough. But because Clara specifically saw the leaf as a reminder of all the time they /should/ have had, that's what the energy of the leaf becomes. It's almost like it's holding an anti-memory, a place where you want an infinite number of possible memories to exist but don't. Now that I think about it kinda reminds me of the weeping angels feeding on the potential energy of the life you should have had if they hadn't displaced you in time, only as abstract creatures they've evolved in a way that lets them consume that infinite potential in a way something like the Old God couldn't. The Doctor's memories couldn't have killed it because they were just that, only his memories. He wasn't trying to feed it any more than the things that physically happened to him in his long and complicated life, and while that's a hell of a lot more than an average person, it's still not infinite. Same goes for the overwhelming majority of the objects it could have eaten. It would have to be something that it's owner specifically saw as a symbol of unrealized potential.
At last, i was waiting for this reaction. One of my fav episodes from 11's run. Here is another controversial statement, i believe, its either the writing or Matt Smiths acting, but 11 seems to give the best speeches. Next to this one i love the one from episode 12 season 5 "The Pandorica Opens" not to mention more to come...
With the retcon of the Doctor's origin in the last Jodi Foster doctor's episode, this takes on a whole new meaning when you think of how many memories and experiences this parasite really tried to eat.
Read the lyrics of The Long Song - it can be read as a story of a Time Lord dying and being regenerated: "Rest now, My warrior. Rest now, your hardship is over. Live. Wake up, wake up. And let the cloak of life cling to your bones. Cling to your bones. Florence Flowers agreed. She's my favourite companion. I thought she was great. I liked the fact it wasn't all about romance like Rose and Martha, she wasn't annoying like Amy was at times. I loved Clara's character and I thoroughly disagree that she ruined Doctor Who like many say. Doctor Who isn't ruined to me but if it is, it's because of Moffat overstaying his welcome and being the producer too long. What also annoys me is that when I mention to people that Clara is my favourite companion, the reaction I get is "oh Yh isn't that just because she's fit". I always have to convince them that I'm talking about her in a character sense. Her being hot, fit whatever is a bonus to me lol.

Strangely this didn’t make much of an impact on first viewing, but ever since I’ve found it pretty fantastic. Great Clara moments and one of the best Doctor speeches, very powerful. The young girl (Emilia Jones) is the daughter of a well known tv presenter and singer, and she also starred in the very dark series Utopia. Random Game of Thrones tie in: at live concerts of DW music this song was sung by Kerry Ingram, Princess Shireen that was.

So glad you loved the episode. I particularly love the ending, once the Doctor's given his all, it's still not enough. It's Clara's mother's lost future that saves everyone. But, I've heard others complain that the Doctor's speech should have been enough. I know Clara can divide fans, but I still feel an emotional connection to the character.

I love 'The Long Song' as much as 'Vale Decem', and 'I am the Doctor', for each of the emotions they stir up. Oh, and 'Chances' by Tourist, in 'Vincent and the Doctor'.
The elements came together and burst apart, forming shoes and ships and sealing wax, cabbages and kings. Until eventually, they came together to make you. You are unique in the universe. There is only one Merry Galel and there will never be another. Getting rid of that existence isn't a sacrifice, it is a waste! So beautiful and this sticks with me always.
I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this to you yet, but you're getting awfully close to the Day of the Doctor (the 50th anniversary special), but before you get to that one, there are a few supplements that you should probably watch first. After you finish the Name of the Doctor (the season finale) you should also watch: - The Night of the Doctor - The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot - An Adventure in Space and Time Then the 50th. This will make the experience full and complete, as it was to those of us lucky enough to experience it in 2013.
Why wouldn't you want to though? There's literally no reason, it's great. And I mean, does she start books halfway through, ignoring the first half? Does she fast forward through a film and only watch the third act, ignoring the rest? Do you too? Idk, it just doesn't make sense to me.

Have been waiting for you to get to this episode. 11's speech is one of the best in the entire series. This is also the first episode where we start to get some insight into Clara (no spoilers: much more to come). Truly enjoy your reactions and look forward to your next one!
This scene takes a whole new meaning in retrospect, Before you'd think she sort of stole the doctors thunder, but theres a little factor they never elaborated on that came into play later. Clara mentions "Futures that were never lived" except...When she split herself, All those "Could have beens" became "HAVE beens" and suddenly, the more claras it ate, the more the timeline created to save the doctor. It was essentially trying to eat a self correcting infinite timelines.
That speech of his, was also a outlet for all the emotions the Doctor had been bottling up since the Ponds left. That why it had some oomph.
I'd hope it had to do with more than just Amy and Rory. He's got a *lot* of tragedy pent up, not just Amy Pond.

If you look at the gravestone of Clara's mom, it shows she died during S01E01 ("Rose"), and it's implied she died during the Auton attack.
Is it? The gravestone date is 3 weeks before the airdate of 'Rose'. Nice idea though.
@@rtozier2011 no, several canonical sources have stated that the auton attack in 'Rose' occurred on the 5th of March, 2005, which is the date on the grave.
@@themasterofterriblecgi5498 Which sources? Unless contrary info appears onscreen in the show itself, via image or dialogue, I tend to default to assuming it's set concurrently with airdate. If it is the same date as the attack, that by itself isn't an implication. To imply she died in the attack, there would have to be a reference to it, at least obliquely.
Also, Clara is from Blackpool, originally, which decreases the chances that her mother would have been in London at the time.
This isn't my favourite episode of doctor who as far as the story goes but dam those speeches and that music are amazing.
Keep that music in mind for the next christmas special! I didn´t even notice it upon first viewing!!
And the way, Matt Smith inflicts his lines in this particular speech is just sublime! I can´t think of any better speech, that he had! (however I can think of a few, some of the other Doctors had.....)

I am SO HAPPY that you liked The Rings of Akhaten so much! Not everything makes sense, and it doesn't have to. It's an explosion of imagination and creativity, it's weird and wonderful.
Most episodes focus on excitement and plot, but this is pure wonder and awe. "Can you feel the light on your eyelids? That is the light of an alien sun." A line that always gives me chills.

I think it's an enjoyable episode, especially The Doctor's speech. But it was a bit of a damp squib that immediately following was Clara going "screw your timelord memories, i have a leaf"
It's pretty much the epitome of a 'Turn off your snarky analytical side and just enjoy it for what it's meant to be' episode.
Most of Doctor Who is the kind of stuff you can look into, pick apart and enjoy that way, Rings of Akhaten is one where you can't really do that, just accept it for what it's meant to be and don't focus on the bouts of poor writing

I always liked the subtle reference that the day her mum died was when the Auton's attacked in Rose(very least was when the episode aired). Also that music cue still gets me, especially with hindsight to what it was setting up.
I've watched this episode so many times that I stopped feeling emotional about it a long time ago but now watching it with you, it all comes back and I'm getting all the emotion of that speech as if it's the first time again. That's why I love watching these reactions. Thank you for that.
You didn't show it in the reaction but the Doctor mentions his granddaughter. That's Susan, one of the very first companions from the classic series, and also the first one to leave.
I also loved the moment, when the Doctor sings along EVEN BEFORE the line happens (also not in the reaction). It´s a small moment and they didn´t even dub it in the German version (where I live), but it really shows, how much the Doctor has come around in space and time!...
OMG the Big Finish short Trip which has come out with 8 and Susan is so sad

Was that when the Doctor translates what they're saying as meaning "grandfather"? He had a sad look on his face after that and I always thought that was the writers referencing Susan, or do you mean another point in the episode?

matt smith did a beautiful job bringing that monologue to life, and paired with the music & the pain and anguish you can hear in his voice, all the heartache from all the friends he's lost, the lonely days in the tardis, and of course, he's still mourning the ponds at this point, aswell as all he lost as ten. so all of that just piles & piles on top of the doctor's speech, and you just hear it. idk, its just a really gorgeous scene and writing is beautiful and matt smith is such a brilliant actor.
That speech always gives me chills and brings a tear to my eye.

I loved The Doctor's line about how our souls are our stories, the stories of those we loved. His speech is epic. There are some good fan vids on that speech that insert scenes from earlier episodes that match what he was talking about.

This is why I loved Eleven. He was just done. He had enough and wasn't going to take anymore. Even to the point of being almost suicidal. That episode was very powerful

I like to believe that this speech applies not only to the Doctor, but to Whovians as well.
I liked this episode, but it's always bugged me that the Doctors memories didn't burn up the Parasite but Claras leaf did - I understand the whole "infinite possibilities" thing, but EVERY item/person has an infinite amount of futures that never happened. In fact I remember hearing/reading that the writer of the episode originally wrote it so that the Doctor burned the parasite but Moffatt wanted Clara to save him...ergh.
Personally like it more this way, because people tend to neglect the small things in life and this episode makes it clear that every little thing in the universe (even an ordinary leaf) is very important to someone or something. I love this message!

I think he died because of the doctors memories + the infinite potential of the leaf. Each one of its own would not be enough

An object isn't going to be imbued with the psychic energy of infinite possibilities if that isn't how someone views that object. If the leaf was just a reminder of her mother and the time they spent together that's all the energy she would have given it and it wouldn't have been enough. But because Clara specifically saw the leaf as a reminder of all the time they /should/ have had, that's what the energy of the leaf becomes. It's almost like it's holding an anti-memory, a place where you want an infinite number of possible memories to exist but don't. Now that I think about it kinda reminds me of the weeping angels feeding on the potential energy of the life you should have had if they hadn't displaced you in time, only as abstract creatures they've evolved in a way that lets them consume that infinite potential in a way something like the Old God couldn't.
The Doctor's memories couldn't have killed it because they were just that, only his memories. He wasn't trying to feed it any more than the things that physically happened to him in his long and complicated life, and while that's a hell of a lot more than an average person, it's still not infinite. Same goes for the overwhelming majority of the objects it could have eaten. It would have to be something that it's owner specifically saw as a symbol of unrealized potential.
At last, i was waiting for this reaction. One of my fav episodes from 11's run. Here is another controversial statement, i believe, its either the writing or Matt Smiths acting, but 11 seems to give the best speeches. Next to this one i love the one from episode 12 season 5 "The Pandorica Opens" not to mention more to come...

With the retcon of the Doctor's origin in the last Jodi Foster doctor's episode, this takes on a whole new meaning when you think of how many memories and experiences this parasite really tried to eat.
Read the lyrics of The Long Song - it can be read as a story of a Time Lord dying and being regenerated: "Rest now, My warrior. Rest now, your hardship is over. Live. Wake up, wake up. And let the cloak of life cling to your bones. Cling to your bones. Wake up, wake up" Then, in Matt Smith's last episode, the regeneration music is a variation on the Long Song that peaks with Twelve saying "I will always remember when the Doctor was me" as the music plays "live", and Amelia Pond telling the Doctor "Raggedy Man, Goodnight" as the music plays "wake up".
Best part of this episode is the speech and the music. Goosebumps everywhere
this episode helped me get over the Ponds. the Long Song, the Doctor facing down the Parasite God, Clara's Leaf... it left me breathless.

The speech the Doctor gives to the "god"/grandfather is so powerful. He sees himself in that being. He's talking to himself. Everything he says is about himself. "An infinity is too much, even for your appetite."

Clara is the most underrated companion.
Florence Flowers agreed. She's my favourite companion. I thought she was great. I liked the fact it wasn't all about romance like Rose and Martha, she wasn't annoying like Amy was at times. I loved Clara's character and I thoroughly disagree that she ruined Doctor Who like many say. Doctor Who isn't ruined to me but if it is, it's because of Moffat overstaying his welcome and being the producer too long. What also annoys me is that when I mention to people that Clara is my favourite companion, the reaction I get is "oh Yh isn't that just because she's fit". I always have to convince them that I'm talking about her in a character sense. Her being hot, fit whatever is a bonus to me lol.
I'm a grown ass man and I still cry every time I watch THAT scene. This episode is one of my favorite of the entire show, excellent in every way.

Strangely this didn’t make much of an impact on first viewing, but ever since I’ve found it pretty fantastic. Great Clara moments and one of the best Doctor speeches, very powerful. The young girl (Emilia Jones) is the daughter of a well known tv presenter and singer, and she also starred in the very dark series Utopia. Random Game of Thrones tie in: at live concerts of DW music this song was sung by Kerry Ingram, Princess Shireen that was.

So glad you loved the episode. I particularly love the ending, once the Doctor's given his all, it's still not enough. It's Clara's mother's lost future that saves everyone. But, I've heard others complain that the Doctor's speech should have been enough. I know Clara can divide fans, but I still feel an emotional connection to the character.

I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this to you yet, but you're getting awfully close to the Day of the Doctor (the 50th anniversary special), but before you get to that one, there are a few supplements that you should probably watch first. After you finish the Name of the Doctor (the season finale) you should also watch:
- The Night of the Doctor
- The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot
- An Adventure in Space and Time
Then the 50th. This will make the experience full and complete, as it was to those of us lucky enough to experience it in 2013.

This scene takes a whole new meaning in retrospect, Before you'd think she sort of stole the doctors thunder, but theres a little factor they never elaborated on that came into play later. Clara mentions "Futures that were never lived" except...When she split herself, All those "Could have beens" became "HAVE beens" and suddenly, the more claras it ate, the more the timeline created to save the doctor. It was essentially trying to eat a self correcting infinite timelines.
