The Ice Warriors are an oldschool enemy (2nd and 3rd Doctor) and one of the better developed ones, as we've seen them both as villains, and as heroes in The Curse of Peladon. They were one of the races that Russell T Davies intentionally tried to write out of Doctor Who as he himself disliked them (Waters of Mars), but failed due to how popular they've been with fans since the 60s.
The Ice Warriors were the villains in two 2nd Doctor stories: _The Ice Warriors_ (1967) and _The Seeds of Death_ (1969). They then became good and appeared in two 3rd Doctor stories as members of the galactic alliance in _The Curse of Peladon_ (1972), which was a light satire of the UK joining the European Common Market. They were the villains again in _The Monster of Peladon_ (1974) but that was a rogue faction and not representative of their race. They didn't appear again until this episode (2013).
"It was a little bit of a forgettable episode." Well, I *did* completely forget that this episode existed, so I guess you hit the nail on the head here.
Yeah, this episode was a bit forgettable. It's far from a bad episode, and it's wonderful to see the Ice Warriors back after nearly a forty year wait since the last time we saw them. It's solid, but compared to the rest of the season, just kinda good. The base under siege style of things you liked is very much an old staple of Doctor Who, it's been done really well, best in The Web of Fear (which featured The Great Intelligence funnily enough)
The old Professor was David Warner, a great british actor of stage and screen. Probably best known internationally from the original Tron movie (he played the Master Control Program), Titanic (he was Billy Zane's Bodyguard/henchman) and from many appearances in Star Trek (ST:V The Final Frontie, ST:VI The Undiscovered Country, and The Next Generation 6th season classic two parter Chain of Command (he played cardassian interrogator Gul Madred in some stunning two hander scenes with Patrick Stewart)
David Warner was the guest actor I was most excited to see in this episode, although I know him best as the voice of Ra's al Ghul from Batman The Animated Series.
People are saying how David Warner was in Tron, Star Trek, Titanic, The Omen - but he was also an Unbound Doctor for Big Finish, so this is I suppose technically a multi-Doctor story, in the same way that Arc Of Infinity and The Fires Of Pompeii technically are.
Liam Cunningham was up for the role of the Eighth Doctor back in the '90s, so it was great to finally see both him and co-almost-Doctor David Warner on the show.
ROFL! I love your reaction at 8:00 where the hand comes up and it's all creepy and scary, but you're just "ok, it has a hand, so it's not a snake. We're all cool, except for that guy." :)
Yeah, this isn't the most interesting episode, not the worst episode. It's one I always forget about. Bound to happen sometimes. Honestly, I can't think of all that many I'm too interested in up until the 50th, but still will be interesting to watch them all again through your eyes
This episode is very much a throwback to the 2nd Doctor era, due to budgeting issues there were many 'Base under siege' episodes with the Doctor, Companions and episode specific characters trapped somewhere with monsters on the outside trying to get them, with Web of Fear probably being the best example of this
Poor Clara, only been along for a short amount of time and she already gets drawn into something this intense! I always wondered, where does she take the confidence for this from??
I think a the second half of this season were huge callbacks to the older Doctor Who series with a greater emphasis on one-off adventures. I believe it was supposed to coincide with the fact that when these episodes were released it was the 50th anniversary of the whole Doctor Who series.
despite your misgivings about the episode I thought it was one of your best reactions. I still remember my reaction when I first seen them during the 2nd Doctors incumbency, hiding behind the sofa!!
Tobias Menzies (Edmure Tully on GOT) is the main bad guy in the show Outlander, and he is BRILLIANT in it. If you like him at all you should check it out - it's a good show overall besides, it has a large fandom and is based on a very long, involved book series. Might be something good to do reactions for at some point... :)
I really liked this episode. The Ice Warriors are one of my favourite creatures in the classics and Big Finish. I don't even mind the CG, although it might have been better to never show his face at all.
I like the Ice Warriors. Cold War was a mixture of Crimson Tide Meets Alien Meets Hunt For Red October. Please watch some Old Skool Doctor Who Classics Jess. :-)
"The old guy" is David Warner. One of the best British actors, ever. If you have never seen Time Bandits, you gotta see it. it is about midgets who stole maps of time door throughout eh universe and they are stealing things. David Warner plays the bad guy. Also, Time After Time with David Warner, Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenbergen. it is about HG Wells building a time machine, his friend (who is not very nice) commits crimes, steals the time machine and HG Wells chases him through time to present day late 70s, early 80s. Anyway, he is an awesome actor. And now I think about it, there is a time traveling theme in all of this. LOL Fitting he should be in Doctor Who then. LOL
THE ONION KNIGHT!!! I remember being so pumped for this episode. The Ice Warriors were a classic enemy, dug into them during the audios and so when they were announced to return, I was ready! I forgot it's hissing might put you off actually because I know you love snakes so much xD It just prompted me with a very good idea too...
An episode named cold war with a reptile being with cold blood, such a brillant parallel about how stupid was the cold war back in the days... ( btw the old man was the vilain in the first Tron movie, i like him, too bad we haven't seen him much more these past few years... )
It's David Warner and he's bloody brilliant - you should check him out in Mark Gattiss' Sci-Fi radio comedy, Nebulous or in the great spoof horror/sci-fi/adventure series 'The Scarifyers' - both of which are at least semi-detached from DW if not actuall spin-offs.
You are spot on as always. I thought there was a lot of missed opportunity with this episode as well. I really appreciate how constructive you are with your critiques, and how you are always willing to push forward in anticipation of better episodes (they DO come. Promise.)
tylerx2f01 My comment was intended to follow the comment left by florencedrunk. I believe Jess doesn't appreciate reading about future story titles so please tred carefully if discussing future episodes. Cheers :)
Love me David Warner - he's done so much great stuff - squeed just as hard at this as I did when I caught a glimpse of Malcolm McDowell in Heroes. Now, I was going to point out the suit has ARMS... but then so did Bathilda Bagshot in Harry Potter, and that didn't do anything to stop the screaming.
Hey all! This is Kyle from Discussing Who! I agree - don't want to be in a submarine! And, I don't like snakes either! For me, the Ice Warriors came across much more menacing in the 2nd Doctor's Era and didn't translate as well in this appearance. This was one of my least favourite of this season - so I agree with you 100%. You're marching onward...and I can't wait for you to watch what comes next! Cheers!
Before the 50th Special, I think you should seek out the documentaries _More Than 30 Years in the TARDIS,_ (1993) and _Adventures in Space and Time_ (not the drama of its origin with David Bradley but the documentary on the history of the show from the BBC's 'Doctor Who Night' (1999). I say this because of your nonplussed reaction to the Fifth Doctor in _Time Crash._ It was a huge thing to have the Fifth return for a brief moment and it was sad to see you a little confused and 'meh' over his return. Some sprinklings of older Doctors from the numerous clips in the documentaries and the people involved from their time may warm your heart(s) to them and give you an understanding how important each one was.
It's a shame because I didn't enjoy any episode from this one to the last one of the series. However the day of the Doctor is one of my favourite episodes ever
I'll admit I thought journey to the centre of the tardis was okay. Personally I hated name of the Doctor, even for scifi and dr who I thought it was a bit too ridiculous
Matt Smith at this point was the youngest actor ever cast to play the oldest version of the Doctor ever! And I just LOVE about him, that you can actually see that in his face.....
I thought the Episode was really good and a great return for the Ice Worries who at that point had not bean seen since 1974! They are some of my favourite Doctor Who monsters.
Looks like Ser Davos has taken to smuggling Martian Ice Warriors.... great cast and nice to see the Doctor and Clara go back to a time that I can actually remember (I gotta admit, I was more of an Ultravox man than a Duranie). The Ice Warrior definitely works better in the armour and although not one of the best stories this season an enjoyable submarine ride nonetheless. And definitely not a snake! phew :)
JustB3NJI - agreed, the general consensus seems to be a fab supporting cast but a mishandling of the ice warrior as a villain, (they never should've showed us what it looked like)
I agree this is one of the most forgettable episodes in 11's run, but having watched it back recently I think it's great for Clara, as this is the first time we see her struggle a bit to cope with the dark side of travelling with the Doctor. I can't wait for you to get to the finale. I kind of feel there was no clear 'direction' this series, like previous series, but it will all be worth it.
RE: the crap CGI creature. It was revealed recently that it was supposed to be a puppet, but they had a Spinal Tap moment with the measurements, making it unusable and necessitating a last minute CGI solution.
Snakes eh? Be fun to see your reaction to the Dirk Benedict classic 'Ssssnake' and, of course the old Hammer, 'The Reptile'. Re-'Game of Thrones', I just saw an amusing 6 part comedy show called 'Wasted' about four teens, one of who's 'spirit guide' is Sean Bean in full GoT regalia.
"Oh it has hands! Great news!" LOL. not something you hear every day. I definitely got an Alien vibe from this too. This episode seems like a filler at first, but the writing is phenomenal. They use the Ice Warrior to allude to the political issues during the Cold War. All that time when we don't see the creature's face, we are scared of it. "the fear of the unknown." But when we see his face, he turns out to not look scary at all. this says that if we get to know our enemies, they turn out to not be as scary as we thought. But as long as we don't know them, they remain something to be feared.
It probably says a lot that many of us are more excited by David Warner than the actual episode! But it was ok for what it was - which was an under siege type filler with a touch of politics.
I think Phillip and Elizabeth might have broken their cover. Mind you Elizabeth still reminds me of that Felicity chick - didn't she do some timey wimey stuff?
If I keep track of the episode you liked and disliked, I have noticed you tend to like episodes written by Stephen Moffat; this episode was not Written by Moffat, and you asker d how this episode received. Not to be harsh but mostly it is considered mid-season filler.
You looked as if you enjoyed it. A lot of Famous Actors would jump at the chance to appear in Doctor Who. That includes American Actors. Tom Cruise said he would like to appear in it. Stephen Spielberg said he would love to do either an Episode or Doctor Who Movie.
JESS DONT READ MORE SPOILERY STUFF IN THIS COMMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...... ...... ...... ...... ...... ...... ..... So does she know how close she is to losing Eleven? I know she knows about Capaldi and that Smith isnt the current Doctor but does she know when it happens?
You're spot on, this was a fairly forgettable episode, and as it was the big return of the Ice Warriors it was even more of a let down, but then that's Mark gatis for you.... he must be able to suck a golf ball down a hose considering how mediocre all his episodes are and yet he still keeps getting called back.
“I know there was an ice warrior on a submarine. I know there was a mummy on the orient express.”
ShadowCat Stop! I teared up.
MyAbridged He must be quite upset that one his doctors and companions are going to meet them in the second Tenth Doctor Boxset for Big Finish
Considering how upset RTD gets about any Doctor Who that's not his personal vision of what the show shouldbe, he should be used to it by now
The Ice Warriors were the villains in two 2nd Doctor stories: _The Ice Warriors_ (1967) and _The Seeds of Death_ (1969). They then became good and appeared in two 3rd Doctor stories as members of the galactic alliance in _The Curse of Peladon_ (1972), which was a light satire of the UK joining the European Common Market. ::rolling my eyes::
Why did RTD try to write them out?
This was actually the first time those Ice Warriors ever appeared out of their suit in an episode - yes, they have appeared before in Classic Who :)
Patrick Fisher And i hope they never will again
"It was a little bit of a forgettable episode."
Well, I *did* completely forget that this episode existed, so I guess you hit the nail on the head here.
It's by Mark Gatiss, so that's expected.
So did most considering Empress of Mars was hailed as return of the Ice Warriors
Yeah, this episode was a bit forgettable. It's far from a bad episode, and it's wonderful to see the Ice Warriors back after nearly a forty year wait since the last time we saw them. It's solid, but compared to the rest of the season, just kinda good.

Oh he has also played alternative versions of The Doctor in several Dr Who Unbound audio dramas by Big Finish.
Don't forget 'The Omen', he's also played The Doctor in some audios.
Bill Watson Along with a guy called Sam Kisgart playing The Master, who looks an awful lot like Mycroft Holmes
David Warner was the guest actor I was most excited to see in this episode, although I know him best as the voice of Ra's al Ghul from Batman The Animated Series.
He was also considered for the role of The Doctor in the Classic era.
I'm laughing so hard at "Oh, it has a hand, that's GREAT. GREAT NEWS!" hahahahahah

Liam Cunningham was up for the role of the Eighth Doctor back in the '90s, so it was great to finally see both him and co-almost-Doctor David Warner on the show.
I loved how this episode used real miniature model effects for the sub and the polar landscape.
Game of Thrones and snakes...Jess is gonna love season 9
ROFL! I love your reaction at 8:00 where the hand comes up and it's all creepy and scary, but you're just "ok, it has a hand, so it's not a snake. We're all cool, except for that guy." :)

I enjoyed this episode with its combination of the Cold War era, Ice Warriors, and 80's music.
This episode is very much a throwback to the 2nd Doctor era, due to budgeting issues there were many 'Base under siege' episodes with the Doctor, Companions and episode specific characters trapped somewhere with monsters on the outside trying to get them, with Web of Fear probably being the best example of this

What do you mean by “I believe” since it was and they were
All out in 2013 so were about big iconic Doctor Who ideas like base under segue
despite your misgivings about the episode I thought it was one of your best reactions. I still remember my reaction when I first seen them during the 2nd Doctors incumbency, hiding behind the sofa!!
When I first watched this, I saw the hand and immediately thought it was a thin Raxacoricofalapatorian.
Well considering they changed the ice Warriors has no wonder
Huge shame that the CG of this episode lets it down. Other than naked-skaldak, I really enjoy this one.
Your Harry Potter PTSD anecdote was awesome. Thanks!
Tobias Menzies (Edmure Tully on GOT) is the main bad guy in the show Outlander, and he is BRILLIANT in it. I love Time After Time - Warner and McDowell are fantastic and tbh I fell in love with Steenbergen (as did McDowell and it shows)
Elizabeth Salvatore well he is a Doctor on Big Finish
I like that we finally got to see the sonic´s red setting here!
Pointless fact: UltraVox's Midge Ure and I were in the same queue for the Nemesis ride at Alton Towers, once.
THE ONION KNIGHT!!! I remember being so pumped for this episode. The Ice Warriors were a classic enemy, dug into them during the audios and so when they were announced to return, I was ready! I forgot it's hissing might put you off actually because I know you love snakes so much xD

Okay, will do :)
not long till that 50th anniversary episode
Any moment now, it's a comin'
+Zerofever who’s coming
In what way is it a disappointment?
Sounds like a question that will bring spoilers @.@
+Radocto Agree - if you're planning to go ahead and begin a whole DW dialogue re-creation the comments will be deleted.
You are spot on as always. I thought there was a lot of missed opportunity with this episode as well. I really appreciate how constructive you are with your critiques, and how you are always willing to push forward in anticipation of better episodes (they DO come. Promise.)
The Ice Warriors: a "B" Second Tier Doctor Who Monster from the 1970s ("A" being the Daleks and The Cybermen).
Hahaha! Your face when you saw the CGI face of the Ice Warrior. Hilarious. Should've left the mask on.
This whole "I'm afraid of snakes" thing makes me really want to see Sesska react to 'Snakedance' and 'Kinda'
MyAbridged Just wait till she gets to The Magician's Apprentice
No spoilers please. Thanks.
tylerx2f01 My comment was intended to follow the comment left by florencedrunk. I believe Jess doesn't appreciate reading about future story titles so please tred carefully if discussing future episodes. Cheers :)
I won´t drop any episode titles, but I can think of another certain Capaldi one, she´s probably gonna hate.....
I suspect S08E02 will go down even worse.
Oh yes! Duran Duran... Hungry like the wolf... The bad wolf?
Love me David Warner - he's done so much great stuff - squeed just as hard at this as I did when I caught a glimpse of Malcolm McDowell in Heroes. Now, I was going to point out the suit has ARMS... but then so did Bathilda Bagshot in Harry Potter, and that didn't do anything to stop the screaming.
"He has a hand! Great News!" You and I have a very different definition of 'great news'....
This is honestly my favourite episode of this series.
This episode has great cinematography
Man snatched by angry alien monster... "at least it's not a snake" hahaha
If that was your reaction to a GoT actor being cast, I just can't wait for you to see the episode 'The Girl who Died' two seasons from now. :D
Well, at least it's not a snake!
Wow, Clara's voice has matured since this ep, she sounds different in later eps.
It’s because they hadn’t decided on her character yet
What character?
Hey all! This is Kyle from Discussing Who! I agree - don't want to be in a submarine! And, I don't like snakes either! For me, the Ice Warriors came across much more menacing in the 2nd Doctor's Era and didn't translate as well in this appearance. Its ok its not going to be a snake, it will be a lizard thing 😂 Oh i love your reactions but yeah i was freaking out with ya.

Name of the Doctor is a masterpiece imo.
Every episode with "Doctor" in the title is a masterpiece imo
Forr3ster I really liked a lot of s7B episodes, but that may be due to how much I love Clara as a character
Well, when he was cast he was. At this point he was probably the same age as Davison was in his first season.
I thought the Episode was really good and a great return for the Ice Worries who at that point had not bean seen since 1974! They are some of my favourite Doctor Who monsters.
Next episode's actually great.
And definitely not a snake! phew :)
I think your views are shared by most. Not a great episode, visuals on the Ice Warrior a bit weak, but not an awful story.

You are my FAVORITE Doctor Who fan!
I just wanted to finally tell you that😅
It may not be anything particularly special but I will always have a big soft spot for Cold War, same goes for the next episode.
I thought the submarine was CGI. I found at a convention that it was a model.
"Oh it has hands! Great news!" LOL. not something you hear every day. I definitely got an Alien vibe from this too. This episode seems like a filler at first, but the writing is phenomenal. Is next week 'Hide'? Love that episode.
Figured you would like the GoT guest stars.
Most memorable thing about this episode is - how sexy does Clara look in uniform!!!!
Aidan Vickery No that's not appropriate.
It's true though!
Aidan Vickery same goes for Amy in Curse Of The black Spot Lol
I always thought she was pretty but never sexy.
THE NEXT EPISODE IS GOOD BELIEVE ME
I liked this episode
IM SUPER HYPED FOR THIS!
Duran Duran>.Hungry like the wolf!
Love the reference to "The Americans"! On that note, are you going to do reactions to any more seasons?
It probably says a lot that many of us are more excited by David Warner than the actual episode! But it was ok for what it was - which was an under siege type filler with a touch of politics.
Just a suggestion but watch once upon a time and teen wolf. These are such great shows
My favourite thing about this episode was the hug at the end between Clara and the Doctor but I feel similarly. Not my favourite.
Snakes or needles?
Aaron from Blind Wave "love" needles)))
I think it sounds like the silence
I got that instead of a snake.
DariusHazano well the Ice warriors came first
ITM 31 i know i just said they sound more like the silence rather than a snake
I think Phillip and Elizabeth might have broken their cover. Mind you Elizabeth still reminds me of that Felicity chick - didn't she do some timey wimey stuff?
Sesska, you are Brilliant and Beautiful. Please keep doing what you do 😉🙂
This was a less actiony version of 42 imo. I prefer 42.
If I keep track of the episode you liked and disliked, I have noticed you tend to like episodes written by Stephen Moffat; this episode was not Written by Moffat, and you asker d how this episode received. Not to be harsh but mostly it is considered mid-season filler.

Not to mention this:
ua-cam.com/video/9w6agKVUCTM/v-deo.html
Well done. I forgot about that one.
And Whoopie Goldberg >> ua-cam.com/video/1LAon8ZTVe0/v-deo.html
Didn't know about that one. Thanks very much.
Dave F - Did that Peter Jackson-directed episode ever happen?
Wait until she meets tyrion😂
The 2nd half of this season really ain't great till the end.
It for fills the movie an episode idea but each episode has huge flaws which are made bigger due to the grand scale
Yeah, atmospheric but filler episode
Just as oxygen fills (well, 21% of) the atmosphere
JESS DONT READ MORE SPOILERY STUFF IN THIS COMMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So does she know how close she is to losing Eleven? I know she knows about Capaldi and that Smith isnt the current Doctor but does she know when it happens?
She does not.
It wouldn't be Doctor Who without some unimpressive CGI for us to laugh at. :P I agree, this episode is completely fine but nothing outstanding.
Wannabe_Baby you mean new Who
Classic who couldn’t use CGI as well it wasn’t really a thing
Oh, you're so gonna hate Colony Sarff in Season 9...
I do like this episode but I just don’t like the sudden ending. In my opinion the longer it goes on the worse it gets
The TARDIS' translation is very inconsistent on accents.
So I see you don't like snakes.
Interesting...
Magician's Apprentice is gonna be fun.
Hungry like the wolf......???
You're spot on, this was a fairly forgettable episode, and as it was the big return of the Ice Warriors it was even more of a let down, but then that's Mark gatis for you.... he must be able to suck a golf ball down a hose considering how mediocre all his episodes are and yet he still keeps getting called back.
