      If you really want change from the binary choice, then voting Reform in large numbers is the only way to get it.

      Probably 10 or less. I think everyone who is sane knows the first past the post system is completely outdated and it's exceptionally difficult to break through as a smaller / newer party. Works against the people as they think their vote does not count. Has to change@@SmileyEmoji42

Also, Hitchen's in his usual condescension doesn't take any responsibility for this. Agree to a point. But I can see why it bothers Hitchens (from his perspective), because he’s a traditional conservative.
      Reform and Farage are pretty neo-liberal Thatcherite (people wrongly assume she was conservative. She was not. At all. She happened to be in the Conservative Party) in quite a radical way. Radical change is the antithesis of Hitchens.

      A vote for Reform is a vote for a Labour government.

    • @scepteredisle
      @scepteredisle 3 місяці тому

      This just isn't true, mate.
      Reform is a Hard Right party (I am personally Hard Right myself). That is why disgruntled Tories are voting for them as well as 100,000s of anti-immigrant voters, right?
      The Tory party contains three wings: Centre-Right, Right-Wing, Hard Right. Most of the Hard Right have gone to Reform according to polling data.
      In the UK right-wing voters are outnumbered by left-wing voters: that's why the Left can afford to split the vote and still win landslides. The RIGHT on the other hand cannot win an election unless they all UNITE. And even then - they need the UK's swing voters mostly voting for them: they vote lib-dem//labour/conservative so are MODERATES, CENTRISTS and obv. wouldn't touch Reform. Moderate floating voters are 33% of the country.
      The entire reason the Tories moved too much to the centre is to keep those moderate voters. They went too far. And have learnt their lesson now. BUT only the Tory party can unite ALL the above. Reform will never get most of the right wing vote or the centrists. Reform are a read-on-arrival party.
      So Voting Reform is voting for Labour. That's the cold reality. People need to get out of their echo chamber. Most of the country just DON'T CARE about immigration - I disagree with them, but that's the reality of the polling.

    Hitchens could argue that changing circumstances mean a changed approach but he seems to think that if the Tories win and keep Labour out of office that this isn´t merely kicking the can down the road. If the Tories were re-elected, they would continue the Blair project admittedly at a slower rate than Labour, but Labour would eventually come to power and any alternative conservative voice, which Reform represent, although not perfect, would be finished. He also contradicts himself saying vote for who you think best, but vote tactically. Finally, and this is the one where I think he needs taking to task on, for the last 5 years he has been saying he no longer tries to shape events but merely records them as an obituarist: if this is so, butt out!

As for policies and laws that can't be reversed! This is what will drive a revolution laws the people refuse to obey, dictatorial leaders who must be removed by force. Peter's track record :-
    1990s and 2000s, writing in his column for the Mail on Sunday about how bad the Maastricht and the Lisbon treaty were for the UK, and complaining about German expansionism in the EU. Does a documentary for BBC 4 called "This Sceptred Isle" detailing Britain's relationship with the EU. Then come Brexit referendum decides to abstain. Then after the result calls for "the Norway option".
    One of the few mainstream journalists to oppose the harmful lockdowns, and debates both Mike Graham and Dan Hodges on Talk Radio about them. Rightly said that during the 1967 Hong Kong Flu outbreak that no lockdown was used. Then takes a highly experimental "treatment" to "be able to travel to see family members", and says "people should just accept these types of restrictions from now on". I'll add as well that he was a foreign correspondent in the former Soviet Union and wrote specifically about the nature of tyranny under that regime, and yet he couldn't see it coming worldwide when the C situation came to the fore.
    Voiced his opinion many times during the 2000s that the Tories have to be destroyed in order for something to replace them and actually embrace conservative values in numerous columns and media appearances he made. Then come this election, when there's a real chance of that actually happening - says that we must support them otherwise Labour will be much worse.
    Anyone else starting to get a picture of Hitchens' real character or perhaps his role in the mainstream media landscape now?
