- The Golden Girls on the Royal Variety Performance, at the London Palladium. It was shown on BBC1 on 26 November 1988. But, according to the Royal Variety Charity the live performance was on 21 November.
It was the joint 4th most watched programme of the year with 18.15 million viewers. At the time The Golden Girls was broadcast on Britain's fourth terrestrial channel (Channel 4.) which had existed since 1982 and was one of its most popular shows.
I read that the Golden Girl's invitation and this performance was at the direct request of the Queen Mother. This was excellent.
Yes, it was her favorite show during this time.
Yes, that is true.
As far as I know, this is exactly what happened. And Rue stated, when the Queen Mum makes a request, you accept without thinking and the honour is the highest honour ever. I love this story.
I like bed wiet off the golde in grils ok my names and shawnee kay anderson
Probably she was already drunk by the time this sketch started.
When Rue said "Did you hear that Dorothy? They got us boys!" I died.
You did? And what happened when the ambulance man arrived?
😂 they brought her back to Life 😂
“I only ever saw the bulls and the horses…”
“Tough act to follow”
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks I couldn’t understand what she said. 😂
😅😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
@@geraldhubert6414I certainly did
R.I.P. to the most beautiful, gorgeous, respectable, funny and amazing ladies... Estelle, Bea, Rue and Betty. Thank you for all the laughters that you brought in our lives. Bravo!!!
What Shirley said ❤
I still cannot believe that they're all gone. And I'm not ashamed to admit that that fact hurts a lot. RIP Estelle Getty (July 25, 1923 - July 22, 2008), Bea Arthur (May 13, 1922 - April 25, 2009), Rue McClanahan (February 21, 1934 - June 3, 2010), and Betty White (January 17, 1922 - December 31, 2021). You will all be missed, a lot.
@@heinzdoofenshmirtz8643I know I miss them too. But their always with us through the show
@@heinzdoofenshmirtz8643 I am a 'new' fan of these fabulous ladies and enjoying watching them very much. Very funny and 'family friendly'. Apparently, Betty White was just a couple of weeks from her 100th Birthday when she left us, what a trooper! ❤
True professionals . These ladies are truly gold.
Love it when Blanche says "Get out of here!!"
Dorothy Zbornak none better!
When did you come again Dorothy
I wanted to see u so bad
Then why did you leave them.
while they are all great, you can really tell how great Bea is at theatre.
yes, she has the longest experience in theatre compared to the others. I am not sure if Betty have been or participated in a theatre show/play but I am sure the other three ladies were.
To my knowledge Betty is TV all the way.
Dylan Simon Yes. She was the only one without any previous stage experience
@@nickwheeler4682vw g byb
Rue also was in theatre for years before she made it big on TV. She was in a play with Dustin Hoffman, for example. And Estelle was in Torch Song Trilogy and that’s where the casting agents for GG discovered her.
"Just ask that fine-looking lady up there in the expensive seats." 🤩
I'm guessing that was a reference to The Queen Mum...
9:28 Betty
I almost died at the way Estelle casually announced, "Til the ambulance man came" whilst eating her sandwich! 😂
In the show the actual line was, "Til the paramedics came." Lol. Same difference
Delana Johnson I think she forgot the word but knew what was meant and improvised
@@stefansnellgrove She said ambulance cos that's what we say in England. They changed it for us. Nowadays we actually say paramedics, but we didn't then. I love it.
Kat G We say ambulance too
@@stefansnellgrove Oh ok. I've never heard any American say it. In films, tv shows etc. Always paramedics. But fair enough. I do think she said it for an English audience though. Seeing as the origal line is, until the paramedics came...
I remember Estelle Getty saying in an interview, regarding the shows success, she couldn't believe they were going over to London to do a Royal Variety Performance. What a great lady and performer, they truly were the golden girls.
I believe it because they were 4 legends and betty white god bless is 100

All other sitcoms do not hold a candle to the Golden Girls. Absolutely witty, charming, and hilarious. Four memorable characters. All the girls are funny in their own way, I cannot tell which one is my favorite! They were all amazing. It's a shame Betty White is the only one still alive of them, but at least we still have one. Anyways, their comedic legacy will last forever. This sitcom is truly timeless. It never gets old.
Agree!!!
Absolutely true !!!
i agree - seinfeld might be as funny, but part of its comedic power lies in the fact that if a character was hit by a bus, i don't think i'd much care - i'd probably laugh. i hated those bastards, those gut-bustingly funny bastards
the golden girls was touching - by ur 3rd episode, blanche, dorothy, rose, and sophia are ur dear friends - u care what happens to them, because they're just so fun, so charming, and so very, very human
Yesit'sJess Agree, you replace them or just have three which is why Golden Palace tanked
Yesit'sJess replace or have only three it doesn't work
"On Mars, Rose!" 😂😂 her sarcasm always gets me!
True 😂
It's pretty ballsy for a sitcom cast to do this act in front of a "real", non-studio audience (one including the freaking top members of the Royal Family) where there's no cuts, no laugh track, no cues for laughs/claps/etc. But The Golden Girls and these 4 ladies could pull it off. This just goes to show the genius of the writing and acting on this show. Today, if you took a "sitcom" on the air and did this, it'd be a total flop.
Also it was different. Four older women. Just like the show Roseann show cased a overweight wife and husband trying to make ends meet. Both shows were great because it didn't have just young people, and great writers.
Allen M. Quinn Have you ever been to a sitcoms taping?! There is no "laugh track" and there most certainly is no "cue" for laughing or clapping. I've been to about 10 sitcoms taping and the laughter is all real. It really is like a theater performance except for the rare outtake, which is understandable given that they prepare a 20 minute show including precise blocking in 4 days. These women are amazing, but in fairness, the stars of any sitcom (that is taped before an audience) would be capable of performing a live skit in character in front of an audience
They were all seasoned theater and live performers, so it was in their blood!
@@cameronjournal agree
@Tom Caine acting since the silent era? No.
Doing it live is a huge accomplishment in itself... but especially for Estelle. Her dementia was affecting her even during the Golden Girls. She used to write her lines in some of the props and tables on set, and it would cause her a lot of anxiety. So for her to do this live with such an important audience... good for her! I wonder if that’s why they chose this scene because she didn’t have as many lines.
You know she had the same dementia that caused Robin Williams to well I can't say it. That's why I have huge respect for Estelle she managed to live till her 80s but it must have a very terrible ending
She really enjoyed working with the girls and playing her character. I'm glad she got to experience the level of success before her health started going south. I like to think of it as life giving her one last big gift, with a card attached that read "Thank you for being a friend." 😇😇😇
Actually they said she had severe stage fright. Then in the golden palace she started getting sick
@@tharris19 In fact the severe stage fright was exacerbated by her short term memory loss. She was afraid she wasn’t going to remember her lines and that she would mess up the joke in front of live audiences. It got so bad in later seasons that they switched her to cue cards to help her out during taping.

The Golden Girls were so popular in the UK. Channel 4 brought some brilliant US sitcoms over during the 80's.
I’ve been watching all the repeats with joy. Brilliantly written, charming, funny, sweet, delightful.
I binge watched all the Golden girls box sets over the weekend. I suffer with depression & these ladies are always my go to when I have dark days.
@@elenaescocia2479this week for the first time in ages I've just been constantly watching the Golden Girls! Such a great show to put a smile on your face, but don't forget those beautiful poignant moments too.

Blanche: “How’s that possible? Another man showed up?” -takes me out every time!!! 😂😂😂
Estelle Getty’s delivery of one liners is masterful!
She was reportedly always frantic remembering her lines. She is so awesome
These women are so talented. How they can remember all those lines while stimultansly maintaining a conversation rhythm so effortlessly is so impressive. I can barely remember a phone number.
Professionals! Mazel tov.
Literally!!
I agree ☝️
Factos!
Bea had been on Maude, Betty had been on the Mary Tyler Moore show with Rue....and I don't know what Estelle had been doing.
"Tough act to follow" that line was PERFECT
This was actually an episode except that they had changed some of the words.
+rgalang74 Actually, it was bits of multiple episodes sewn into one. Worked great!
Yes. I remember all these lines. One was from the episode Blanche hit menopause. Some was from the first few episodes..Barry Glick was gay lol
I ws waiting for the line "Boy, that bull would have been jealous!"
I'm still confused a to why this version made it sound like Dorothy had gotten pregnant by Stan in college as opposed to high school. Of all things, was that too promiscuous for the royal show's sensibilities?
@@NasikaSakura Actually I don't see that assumption. The part where Dorothy talks about Stan breaking her relationship with Barry is pretty much the same as in the show.
"Tough act to follow..." That made me spit on my phone 😂😂😂😂😂
Rue's timing is impeccable on that. *dead*
I freaking love her
The look Dorothy gave her was a priceless burn!
"I'll get the pepperoni." - Blanche
"I'm shocked!" - Sophia

These four phenomenal women totally made history! Nothing on TV today comes nearly as close to the quality, genuine comedy they delivered back in the 80s. The chemistry they had together is what made the show a success, and each actress made it a huge privilege for us :)

People who do live theatre are just amazing. No room for mistakes or forgotten lines. So professional
They aren't amazing. It's TALENT.
1) the writing; 2) the value of theatre training - these women seamlessly made the transition from TV studio to stage; 3) their sheer talent pulled this off which could have gone horribly wrong. (It is interesting to notice how comfortable Ms. Getty is in this medium...so natural.)
Basically some of the best lines of the series all piled together.
That's why I don't find this particularly funny.

Awesome! You can tell Rue, Estelle, and Bea (RIP to all these talented actresses) were at home in a theater setting, considering they got their start there. Betty White definitely held her own considering her career in television!
assaultislove You're right, although the shows Betty did when she first started out were all live, so she's familiar with performing in front if live audiences!
Golden Girls itself was filmed in front of a live audience, so this wasn't much different than what they did every week, except for the empty set.
Estelle was always nervous as fuck... She wasn't a live performer. It was probably the dementia already... She would frooze and forget all her lines. Poor Estelle...
Victor Rodrigues aawwwwww 😔😟
She does seema bit nervy
Estelle can deliver a line outta nowhere 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Who would have guessed that the best sitcom of all time would star 4 old ladies.
Not exactly rocket science; the stuff they say to each other when men ain’t looking would fill several libraries at one outing!
